沖縄 西表島にある「外離島(そとばなりじま)」を紹介します。
外離島は西表島南東部「白浜港(しらはまこう)」の北西約3kmにあります。
島の西端には「番屋峰(ばんやみね)」とよばれる、標高148.5mの山があります。
琉球王国時代には番所である“火番盛(ひばんむい)”が置かれていました。
太平洋戦争時には「船浮臨時要塞(ふなうきりんじようさい)」が建設され、外離島には野砲などが設置されました。
1987(昭和62)年に“琉球真珠”が「西表島外離養殖場」を開設しました。
1998(平成10)年には黒真珠の加工場が作られましたが、今は廃墟となっています。
となりにある「内離島(うちばなりじま)」との間は遠浅で、砂嘴(さし)が形成され潮の状況によっては歩いて渡れます。
明治から昭和にかけて、西表島北西部や内離島は炭鉱採掘で賑わいました。
外離島にも戦後に炭鉱が開かれたましたが、その後廃れ無人島にもどりました。
別名で“ほかばなりじま”とも呼ばれ、地元では“ふかぱなり”や“ばねー”とも呼ばれています。

The Sotobanari Island are located about 3 km northwest of "Shirahama Port" in the southeastern part of Iriomote Island.
At the western end of the island, there is a mountain with an altitude of 148.5m called "Mt. Banyamine".
During the Ryukyu Kingdom era, a guardhouse called "Hibanmui" was placed here.
During the Pacific War, the "Funauki Temporary Fortress" was built, and field guns were installed on the Sotobanari Island.
In 1987 (Showa 62), "Ryukyu Shinju" established "Iriomote Island Sotobanari Pearl Farm".
In 1998 (Heisei 10), a black pearl processing factory was built, but now it is in ruins.
The distance to the nearby "Uchibanari Island" is shallow, forming a sand spit that can be crossed on foot depending on the tide.
From the Meiji era to the Showa era, the northwestern part of Iriomote Island and the Uchibanari Island were bustling with coal mining.
Coal mines were also opened on the Sotobanari Island after the war, but after that, they fell into disrepair and returned to uninhabited islands.
It is also called "Hokabanari Island" by another name, and is also called "Fukapanari" or "Bane" by the locals.
