This is awesome Mr. Do, especially for the younger people that haven't soldered. Quick story, i been soldering for about 30 yrs from soldering speakers when i was young to building electric skateboards and fpv quads, etc. One time i was soldering a lose connections on my sons e-board and i asked him to come near so i can teach him how to solder, his answer was, "I'm never gonna solder". He's now 22 yrs old and is a U.S Marine stationed in N.C, so he owns an electric guitar and one of the wire connections that connectected to the guitar jack had come lose, he showed me, so i said, being a parent, remember when i was trying to teach you how to solder and you said you would never do it, well, he could have gone to walmart buy a $10 soldering gun, heat up the solder that was holding it together with the wire and be done with. Well, he ended up taking the guitar to get repaired and they charged him $60 to just connect that single black wire. Lesson learned, if your parent is trying to teach you something, some day you will be greatfull that they taught you what to do in the smallest to the largest thing.

Exceptionally concise solder tutorial for RC applications! The difference between the older soldering irons and the newer digital ones is amazing. For the same wattage, the difference is night and day. They just keep dumping the current into the tip! Great video!!
@DoRC
@DoRC 14 күн бұрын
The temperature control is definitely better though as long as the power outputs the same they're going to behave similarly. I think one of the big differences is that a lot of the older irons lied about their output. Of course they probably still do but I think it's a little less of a common problem these days

Well done mate, this is the most comprehensive dive into soldering that I've ever seen! I learned so much today, especially about soldering thick wires. I need to redo my XT-150's, I'm pretty sure they are not done right after watching this video. What I do though when soldering connectors to a battery, is do as you do, but then use a rubber band to hold the other wire against the battery. Once again mate, outstanding video! Cheers

great video! your new aixun soldering station is beautiful, i purchased the aixun T3A with the most powerful t245 handle and new holder that has the wire that connects to station that puts the tip into dormancy or sleep mode while its in the holder! greatly increases your tip life. so ive learned the very most important thing to make your aixun soldering station perform at literally the same performance level as a genuine jbc station is to get geniune jbc soldering iron tips for your aixun handle! when i did this i was blown away in the difference, the most versatile and most powerful jbc tip you would want to buy is the jbc c245766 tip! its the largest at 5mm at the end with a 45 degree angle and big contact surface to solder large areas. with this tip or any jbc genuine tips your aixun will be the beast jbc killer and those qs8 plugs will solder with ease and simplicity, i solder qs8 plugs with my aixun set to 310 celcius with no problem even 300 is fine.

As someone who does a lot of this, it's very refreshing to see a video that gives a good explanation about the issues most first timers encounter!! Excellent vid it always surprises me how many people choose to run adapters instead of cutting off original connectors and replacing with required connectors. I guess in many cases it’s to protect esc/battery warranty but I always advise against adapters. I have had a bad experience with adapters and I’ve seen other horror stories too. Soldering is definitely something anyone can do but as you mentioned it is a skill and requires practice to get it right. Like you I’ve been soldering for over 20 years and I got some great info from this vid. My advice to anyone if getting into the electric side of the hobby definitely get the best iron you can afford and start practicing as there will almost certainly be a point where you will need to solder. Cheers bro

You can get a separate container of rosin for older boards. Older boards tend to be a little more oxidized and require physical sanding/abrading and extra flux to get rid of that oxidation. Also, it’s important to plan out how you’re going to make your connections. Air ESCs tend to have longer leads on their connections since they tend to have more space. In the cars we see on this channel, space generally comes at a premium, so the female bullets are often soldered directly to the ESC. If you have the space, longer leads might be preferable.

2:57 OMG, THIS is what happened to my ESC wire. My solder has no flux, since it's for stained glass. A timely choice of subject. 3 days ago I soldered my first XT90. Turned out great. Yesterday I decided to cut off the second battery lead from the factory "Y" cable that came on my Max 8, so that I just have two wires coming out of the ESC for one battery... It looks like it was soldered by a one-armed 2 toed sloth who was drunk. It probably still works, but I also probably should have used 0.5mm solder instead of a roll of 2mm thick plumbing style solder that dripped everywhere. We live and we learn. Thanks for another useful tutorial. PS: i use a KSGER T12 station with a Hakko tip. Because I can't afford a Hakko station.

Outstanding video...VERY informative. Over the past 10-12 years, I've watched several videos on soldering...and, I'd have to say, this is one of, if not 'the', best I've seen. That said, there is a fourth method of wire-to-wire soldering that I noticed you didn't mention. I'm not going to say (or even attempt to claim) that it's better than the other three methods, but I'd say it's probably at least as good as the Lineman's Splice. I'm not sure if there's any actual name for this method, but it involves shoving the two wires into each other, so that the strands of both are sorta-kinda "intertwined" within each other. Then, once they've been shoved together, and each wire is being held by a soldering jig arm, that's when the wires can be soldered together. I've used this method several times, and so problems have occurred. Again, I don't know if there any actual name for this method...or, if it's even a 'recognized' method...but, it does seem to have a VERY strong hold.

Great video! I spent hours trying to solder new connectors to my 8s esc yesterday and this video really highlights what I did wrong and why it gave me such a hard time. That terminal holder would also really have come in handy!

Those were great tips and I even learned something I didn’t know Love to gain new info The only one tip I would add is when soldering battery (female ) connectors Make sure your solder also doesn’t run between terminals I’ve seen many times where it has when especially in-experienced people start It’s easy to have it drip if the connector is tilted or the connector has a center pin for smart battery’s Either way awesome tips I use a track power to-950 analog iron with hako850 (I think ) wand I struggle on the 8 gauge with it I also use a folded paper towel to shield my fingers from heat in wires I don’t recommend wetting the towel cause it will cool the surface and if iron isn’t powerful enough (like you stated ) it only will supply a limited wattage Great video and advise per usual

One of the best tutorials and info on soldering yet! But I prefer to use crimped connectors whenever possible. Look inside the engine bay or electrical panel of a car, truck, or airplane and see everything is _not_ soldered, but crimped - even from tiny 28awg signaling wires to big 6awg wires or larger for battery. That said, I wish they had crimped version of the XT90 and QS8 connectors. Where the backend is crimped but the front end is the normal bullet. There are connectors like the PowerPole 75 but they have too big of a housing.
@DoRC

Yes, done properly crimping is superior.

Great tutorial on soldering. You even did some live work on the 1400mAh lipo. I like how you have jigs set up to hold the wires and connectors. I get nervous when putting connectors on batteries and normally add some shrink sleeve or electrical tape on the first post and them solder the 2nd one. Your videos are always informative and a pleasure to watch. 👍👍

@@DoRC I totally understand. You are very capable and skilled at this so it's no big deal. I can still remember when I was a kid and my Uncle had a lead acid car battery in his garage and I wanted to see what would happen if I bridged the 2 post with a piece of wire. No explosion, thank goodness but the wire got cherry red and burnt the hell out of my thumb when I quickly removed it. I never told him and just suffered with pain for a couple of days. I think a lipo would be more of a violent reaction if it was dead shorted.

Nice video, My suggestion is to add to the instructions would be with the XT30,XT60 and XT90 is to attach its mating socket while soldering, this will prevent the XT plastic from deforming in the event of excessive heat.

Awesome. I suck at soldering. This helped me out. A lot actually. I learned how to solder like 3 months ago. And still I just showed me more than I knew. Thank you. I just been using harbor freight cheap ass soldering tool and one of those Amazon battery connector jigs. The jig made it a lot easier, but still every extra bit helps. Great instructional video dude. 👍 😊
