You definitely can though running two lipos in a vehicle design for one can sometimes be challenging because the battery tray isn't made for it. Ultimately though this was intended to showcase how running higher voltages is better so to be honest the higher the voltage the better within reason as it's just going to keep getting more and more efficient and lighter. It is important to keep in mind though that the higher you go with the stock motor the more likely it is you're going to over rev it and kill it.

I think most people are going to single batteries these days. There really isn't a lot of advantage to running dual batteries and like I said at the end of the video the primary problem right now with higher voltage systems is just that people aren't using them so the demand is low causing the prices to be high. Given that running higher voltages is advantageous for power and weight I think people should really start looking at it. The more we do it the more manufacturers might notice and then once we start getting some mainstream 7s vehicles out there things will get a lot cheaper

@@DoRC I agree about the single battery statement, as I'm guilty myself. Any platform I get for dual battery goes single, unless there is a spot on both sides of the chassis for a battery. The weight distribution needs to be correct, even for bashers, as you know well. So for me, a 7s system would probably need to be centralized, as the motor/esc/servo/receiver side probably still wont weigh what a beastly 7s does! But, there are other ways, and that's the point. Yeah it's kind of accomplishing two different goals. Classically higher voltages have been used and associated with more power but it doesn't have to be that way. A higher voltage system can be used to generate the same amount of power while being smaller lighter more efficient and cheaper. That's kind of what I'm advocating for here. Our modern managers don't really need more power per se but making them lighter more efficient and cheaper definitely is a good thing.

In regards to the VHB tape, Two things If people are having issues with their VHB 1.) 3m recommends rubbing the tape with your finger to warm it up, and running your finger nail across it, to "activate" the adhesive before removing the film. 2.) They also make a primer you can use on the surface you wanna stick the tape too, however that is more of a permanent solution, and will make removing whatever you stick down that much more difficult, and depending on the surface almost impossible without damage Also, if youve ever heard of the "silicone lottery" in regards to great performing CPUs, im curious if i won the motor & ESC lottery with my Notorious V5, because ive seen people complain about the v5s lack of power, but my v5 on 6s acts the same way your v6 did on 7s.
@DoRCКүн бұрын
I think it depends. If you're running stock gearing The V5 will behave the same under initial acceleration just because it has more mechanical advantage. With the 16 tooth pinion the V6 is a lot faster on the top end but gives up some of that bottom end which is restored on 7S.
@surfside75Күн бұрын
I see what you've done here and it's good.. I've kept a simple formula, all my 3s get 150a esc to run on 4s. 6s get a 160a esc to run 8s. Stock motors work no issues just fan em.
@DoRCКүн бұрын
Nothing wrong with that. The nice thing about 7S is that you can still run it single battery and you're pretty much guaranteed that the 6s motor won't blow up. 6s motors on 8S usually are okay but they can get over revved.
@KiloWattRC22 сағат бұрын
for the simple fact that most esc's can only technically detect even number of cells to properly enable LVC. Not to mention 1 extra cell doesn't add much weight. If your motor is rated for 7s max voltage then this makes sense.
@DoRC22 сағат бұрын
Well to be fair ESCs that can't handle five or seven s only can't do it because they haven't been programmed to do so. Castle ESC's can therefore electronically any ESC can. It's not really the weight of the extra cell that is the benefit It's the reduced size of wiring potentially smaller ESC smaller motor etc.

You really don't want to mess with lipo batteries that are going bad because that's how lipo fires happen.

So to run 4s on 3s rated components without overheating the motor would need “the same” amount of power (wattage at the motor) to be governed by some other means than the motor’s inherent limitations; like a throttle trim? I would assume that, apples to +apples-trim, the higher voltage setup would give better burst and long term wattage delivery In addition most over-powered setups can’t use all the power without losing control anyway, so if you’re running throttle trim to keep it on the ground it might just work for insane power across the whole run. At least in winter 😂
@DoRCКүн бұрын
Yes the more power the motor is converting the warmer it's going to get but ultimately the goal would be to have these vehicles coming from the factory running higher voltages so that the systems could be tuned and sized correctly out of the box.

The d300 is a 300 watt total charger but I believe it can only do 150 Watts per channel. In order to charge that battery at 1C you need more than 150 watts. @RC4usКүн бұрын
@ yeah I've found some but then I need a power supply and I'm so confused on that end of it
@DoRCКүн бұрын
@RC4us basically you just need a power supply that outputs the amount of Watts that you need the charger to be able to output plus a little bit more. I think the input voltage requirements would be in the manual for the charger and if you have any questions I charger can probably give you some guidance.
@RC4usКүн бұрын
@ so you mean like my rdx2 800 would need a power supply that can push 800watts I could be thinking wrong
@DoRCКүн бұрын
@RC4us You're thinking is correct though we need to be a little bit more than 800 Watts as in order to get 800 w out you need to put more than 800 Watts in due to electronic conversion losses. How much more I'm not entirely sure but a thousand Watts would probably cover it. You also probably don't want to be pushing the power supply to its absolute limit all the time anyway. The other consideration is voltage. Some chargers have a minimum 24 or even higher voltage requirement to get full output power which can make getting power supplies for them a lot more difficult.

@DoRCКүн бұрын
As long as you're using a good quality charger and the battery is in good shape it should balance just fine as it should have started out almost perfectly balanced from the last charge. As far as why it's a matter of convenience. When I want to go bash I want to go bash I don't want to wait hours for my batteries to charge and then go bash. Obviously that's going to be different for everyone and if you don't mind waiting then the additional power really isn't necessary.

Yea this is just pointless. Sorry if that comes off as negative or rude. But, if you want more than 6s, drive an 8s. If you want less than 8s, drive 6s. I mean 7s? Seriously? Who cares about a little extra weight of an 8s. This is a hobby, not life and death racing competitions.
@DoRC22 сағат бұрын
So there are some advantages to upgrading to 7S. The first one is that you're less likely to damage a motor only going up one cell rather than two. The second one is fitting a single 7S battery into a 6S vehicle is a lot easier than two 4S packs. Ultimately though this wasn't really intended to Tell people that they specifically should be upgrading to 7S. It was more to advocate for running higher voltage in general. I do kind of explain this at the end of the video. To be fair though 7S really isn't that ridiculous it's just not really done much So it seems that way. It's just as valid of a cell count as any other cell count.
@OGRCFanatic22 сағат бұрын
@ yea, but although I respect your opinion on this, I just don’t see the point. You’ll probably never even notice any real difference in one cell. I respect your opinion. You think it’s something worth doing, I feel it’s a waste of time and money, and a lot of trouble for very little reward. If I want more speed than my 6s notorious will give me, I’ll drive my XRT 🤷🏻♂️ Still interesting content, though. I just personally don’t see any benefits to doing this.

The worst thing about 5s and 7s is basically zero escs recognise 5-7s without setting them to NIMH. Cars like that dont need more than a decent 6s system and that's saying something coming from me😅
@DoRC5 сағат бұрын
It's not really a matter of whether or not the car needs it. This wasn't primarily an increasing your power video This was primarily to advocate for the efficiency benefits of higher voltage systems. Fortunately most castle ESCs will recognize odd numbered cells and any ESC has the capability of it they're just not programmed to. If more people started using them more ESCs would start supporting them.
@Boogie_the_catКүн бұрын
I excitedly bought a 5s battery but my Max 8 recognizes it as a 6s battery that is nearly depleted. In general I'm more thrifty than lazy, but I don't feel like manually telling the ESC (thru Bluetooth app) that I'm running 5s and then changing it back each time i run 5s, so the new battery sits in the corner, crying. I think for this 7s thing to catch on, more manufacturers aside from Castle need to reprogram their ESC firmware to recognize odd numbers aside from 3s. I recognize the value of your idea, but someone needs to send Hobbywing a memo. They're a little "slow" if you get my drift. 😮😂

@DoRC2 сағат бұрын
I'm not sure. The latest version of the stock ESC is really good and it's primarily motor limited now. I drove the car off camera on 6S with the castle ESC and it wasn't really that much different. That being said the goal of the video wasn't really to make my particular car significantly more powerful The goal of the video was to advocate for running higher voltage systems in RC due to the increased efficiency of those systems.

I think you hit the nail on the head. With 8S power the XLX2 is still more powerful than the max 5 G2 on 12S power. As soon as we see an ESC that has more jam on 12S everybody will be running 12S.

You say more power same weight but how can you add a cell to a battery and not add to it's weight?
@DoRC21 сағат бұрын
For the same amount of total energy in the battery you would have a lower per cell capacity so the weight would essentially end up the same. You would have slightly increased weight due to the additional foil wrapper on the outside of the extra cell and a little bit for the tabs connecting the cells but that would be pretty negligible.

5S or maybe even 6s. The reality is that we're only really limited in voltage by what we're willing to do. Higher voltage systems are always going to be more efficient and always going to be lighter so it really makes sense to go with the highest voltage we can get away with.

Where do you get the VM 3HB? (yes, I know, I'm being a smartass) The individual power supplies is interesting. My ancient 4 button chargers both had their AC power supplies blown up by an idiot (me) charging 6s packs at 5a. Oops. Since they still worked on the DC side, I just plugged them into a 12v30@ industrial power supply, and they've worked fine for 15 years. A couple of weeks ago, I opened one up and discovered that the AC power supply is just a generic laptop brick with the output soldered to the board, so I took that out to save weight or something. Then I destroyed one charger using a cheap connector that I didn't know was cheap.
@DoRCКүн бұрын
I buy mine on Amazon. Yeah I have found from the power chargers I have taken apart that all of them pretty much run an independent power supply. I guess this makes sense especially for chargers that can run off DC as the power supplying and the charging systems really are two separate things.
