What is your tips on how to slowly become proficient in reading music and scales? How do I practice to become a better musician? Instead of just remembering how to play by memory and finger placement?

memory and finger placement are totally fine though ! but hmm if I had to answer, just learning tunes is the best thing even if it takes time to get through them - learning things in context of music helps them stick, and increases your general musicianship quickly in my opinion !
