The MSR Xplorer Jacket and MSR Xplorer Pants from Rocky Mountain ATV/MC might just be the best value in all of motorcycle gear. You get premium (think Klim or REV'IT) quality at half the price. This 'buy it for life' quality dual sport and adventure motorcycle gear can be had for less than $800 (jacket AND pants) which is only slightly more than the Klim Carlsbad jacket itself.
It's been a year since my initial MSR Xplorer gear review, and in that time I've put ridden thousands of miles in conditions ranging from the hot Mexican desert to the snowy mountains and the MSR xplorer jacket and MSR xplorer pants have held up incredibly well. I've stayed warm, dry, and protected in all kinds of weather and I'm beyond impressed with how good this gear has been throughout.
My MSR Xplorer jacket review is simple. It's awesome. Likewise my MSR Xplorer pants review is basically the exact same. Don't sleep on this stuff. It's fantastic dual sport riding gear at a cheap price.

I bought a suit after watching your's (then others) reviews, and after a year of daily commuting in the PNW, in various temps from low teens to 90ish, and all sorts of different levels of rain (and a bit of snow), I can wholeheartedly recommend this suit if you do that sort of all year riding/commuting, but don't want to spend the money on much more expensive gear. It's not totally perfect, but compared to the gear I used for the last 10 years, it's sooooooooooo much better.

Ben, I just want to thank you for all the content you have produced. I’ve been consuming pretty much any content out there regarding ADV bikes over the past 2 years, dreaming of the day I would be able to get a bike of my own. Your content has been extremely informative and helpful along the way. Easily the most accessible and new rider friendly content on YT. I’m proud to say that as of Saturday, I officially have a bike!

I bought the explorer jacket based on Ben’s original review. I also have had this jacket for almost a year and love it. Rode up Wolf Creek Pass in a thunderstorm last September and it kept me dry. Same trip rode up Pikes Peak and it worked great. I use a heated jacket underneath for colder weather and have never had an issue. Listen to Ben he won’t steer you wrong

Hay, I finally got mine!!! I have had the pants all summer and love them. I just got the jacket, only had it out twice on very short rides. So far so good. A little stiff in the forearm, but should loosen up. And I wish it was two inches shorter in the front. Most of all I wish it had a zip off collar extension, it’s just a little short to close up my neck to helmet in this weather but I wouldn’t want a big collar for warmer weather. A neck gator will get me by. That’s very critical. Overall the set is great!

I bought a set after seeing your review on it, I have had mine through all of last riding season and have about 5000 miles riding in it. I ve been more than happy with it wondered why I waited so.long before making the investment but it has been worth every penny. Most temperature controlled and comfortable riding gear I've had to date, haven't been wet in it riding in rain, is it warm in 90 degree weather yep bit so is everything else. You can actually get a lot of air moving through it with the vents open, but the big difference is it breathes really well. I absolutely recommend this set!

Thanks for the great review! After waiting eight months for the MSR Explorer jacket & pants to restock in my size and color (black), I recently took delivery and could not be happier with the product. I tested Rocky Mountain's return policy, as the 34 waist was slightly small, and had it swapped within a week. Like you, I plan to use the Explorer as three season gear (with my Warm And Safe Generation Waterproof jacket and pant liners for cold weather). I'll round out my summer riding with Klim Baja jacket and pants, which flow an incredible amount of air. As a side note, the Warm And Safe Generation Waterproof is exactly that - fully waterproof (even under the mesh Baja)! Please continue your great videos - we really enjoy them!

I had a stupid highway crash in my XPlorer pants, thankfully I slowed down to around 20 before I hit the ground, you have to search pretty hard to find any indication of the crash. The pants got much more comfortable after a wash which loosened them up. They breath well, and are very waterproof. My only complaint is that I should have gotten the long version, the regular creeps up a bit too much while seated with a 33/34" inseam. Looking forward to the matching jacket, glad I waited for the v2.

I’ve worn this in 110 weather for days - key is all vents open and a light wool underlayer to wick moisture and cool you off (and drinking tons of water and electrolytes to replace what you’re sweating out). Same experience as others - I purchased after your first review and love the gear. Handles atmospheric rivers that have hit California.

Ben I bought the Klim "Badlands" jacket last spring for a desert rally in Arizona. It was brand new BTW when I arrived in AZ. The first day of the Rally, I removed the tags from the jacket and proceeded to zip it up. 5 teeth from the zipper just came off about chest high. I was stuck and had to remove the jacket like a sweat shirt. Luckily I brought backup gear. When I got to the rally early I called the Klim "customer abuse" center. I explained what happened and they told me "You must have abused the jacket" and told me basically I was SOL on speakerphone in front of 3 people you know well. When I got home I sent them a video of me doing a burnout on it with my Jeep and lighting it on fire. I will never buy their crap again! Like you, I have found the less expensive gear is better. When I got home, I went to a local Cycle Gear here in CT and bought their Sedici brand 4 season "Aventura" jacket and pants. 2 year warranty and if it craps out, they give me new gear or my money back. I have to say the quality is superior to Klim hands down. The MSR gear you have is better than Klim by a long shot. I did a video on my little Tube about the gear. LOVE your channel! It's my favorite. Ride SAFE and BE safe Sir! 👍👍

I purchased a set using your links for the east coast BDRs. I agree with all your sentiments. I did the PA BDR-X in mid summer last year and it was hot. Bring lots of water in your hydration pack and go faster for more cooling ;). I hammered parts 3 & 4 (185 miles) in about 4.5 or so hours of ride time on my DR650 (black and white for those of you I might have overtaken) I would totally buy this suit again.

I'll say this for a review on gear that was given to you for free, this was a solid one. I have been watching the MSR gear since last year. Since influencers are known to stretch the truth I went out in search of what other members of the community said. My main concern was glossing over the issues with V1 gear. You didn't, the issues lined up with stuff that was being said on numerous forums. Also, you gave some real cons and that is a solid step in the right direction. From what I heard Rocky Mountain has been awesome with how they are handling the defects and issues. Calling it on par with Klim, I'm still not there, Is it a better alternative to Bilt and Sedici? yeah it looks like it. I get a very good mid tier vibe from the combo but not top of the line. Could it be by V4 or V5, maybe?

Thanks for the review. The problem for me is fit. Klim and Firstgear are the only two manufacturers that when I try on an XL it fits like an XL should. The problem with the MSR is I can't go to a local retailer and try it on first. And even though it's less expensive than the offerings of Klim, it's still a good amount of money to put out hoping it will fit. Like you I also live in Oregon so encountering rain while out on a ride is always a possibility. Stopping to zip in a liner or put a raincoat over is just a big hassle. Besides too late your already wet and cold. As for the zipper for the pants, I do not use them. Like you I added suspenders to my riding pants. I use the button attachments rather than the clamp style. I have had the clamp ones pop open on me in the past. I also use the layering method to deal with temperature changes. I like 1/4 zip fleeces on the lighter weight side, easy to pack in a tank or tail bag. I am looking for a new riding jacket this year and the MSR is a possibility.

Re: all season gear vs purpose-oriented gear - I concur. I still remember taking a long trip with buddies. I was the only one with mesh gear with an insulated layer and wind/rain layer. At least one time, I put on the rain pants and jacket while riding down a curvy back road - biggest challenge was the zippers are two small!!! And regulating temperature was a nightmare. I had none of these issues on a regular rain-proof suit. I did get Klim Carlsbad before the MSR combo came out. Bummer. At least the Klim prices were lower back then.

I hemmed and hawed over the Voyager vs the Xplorer. I wanted a durable, waterproof, breathable protective coat but couldn't decide which one to get. In the end, I got the Voyager and I couldn't be happier. I did a 300 mile ride in steady rain last June from the Mackinac Bridge to my home and I was completely dry. And the Voyager is plenty heavy enough. I wear a XXL and the coat actually runs a little big. I don't think you can go wrong with either one, so buy confidently.

yes the Explorer gear is awesome. I purchased mine last year for the UTBDR in May. As we were going home we stopped in Telluride the next morning a snow storm moved in and it was 32 degrees, that's dern cold for southern Texas boys, I had minimal base layers as I wasn't prepared for duggin snow BUT, I was nice and cozy with what I had. With all the vents zipped up it kept the wind off my body and by the time we got to Cortez, CO I was opening the vents and taking off what base layers I had. PS...DON'T put your phone in the outer right chest pocket. It's not a pocket, IT'S A VENT and is a bear trying to get your phone out of the bottom of the jacket. This is a habit of mine because, that's where I keep my phone with my Klim Dakar jacket.

Ben, I ordered the suit and returned it! How come NOBODY mentions the bad stuff? Here’s my experience: 1-Didn’t fit. Pants waist was fine but length terrible. I wear a 42x30 but the pants only come 33” so all that extra bulk down around my boots was terrible. Jacket fit nicely but the sleeves were 2” to 3” too long. I took the gear to a local leather & riding gear tailor but the eVent fabric gummed-up their sewing machine so they were unable to modify. Based on the fit alone I couldn’t wear this gear. 2- The eVent fabric is STIFF! I felt like the Tin Man wearing this gear. The stiffness made the poor fit feel even worse. Goretex fabric feels much more natural but this eVent almost feels like a rubber suit. 3-Only level One protection versus level Two. Not huge but also not part of your “glowing” presentation. 4-Rocky Mountain never mentions that YOU have to pay to return the gear to them! First time free size exchange but you pay shipping to return. Rocky Mtn provides discount shipping and it only cost me $8.50 to return. 5-Weight! Jacket weighs 5.5lbs and Pants 3.5lbs = just over 9lbs total. It’s just too much of a good thing. Too BIG, too HEAVY, just too UNCOMFORTABLE! So I totally agree this gear is made very well, heavy duty fabric, first rate stitching, Super Fabric on wear areas all appear bullet proof but the lack of sizing is a deal breaker for me. I wish someone had explained the downside before I ordered..

I bought this gear and I live in Montana and traveled all over here, Canada, and Idaho last year and loved it. I will say, the sizing is not true to Klim- my best riding buddy has the same jacket, and his Large fits me perfect (I'm usually a size Large in everything), but the MSR Large was waaaaaay too tight. Sent it back for the XL and it fits a little big, but it is great gear for the price, so..... Also, pro tip- when you wash it, cover up the velcro- because it caught and made marks all over my jacket.

The best value right now is the HWK and Alpha apparel on Amazon. I own the top of the line Dainese Gortex jacket for over 25 years but it cost an ‘arm and a leg’ back in the day. For the last 5 years been mostly using the Amazon gear at 50-$60 Jacket/pants- fantastic value!

Have the 1st Gen xplorer gear and love it.... Was really hoping for a Tall size with the new gen gear. Sleeves are just a tad short for my liking being 6'4" with long arms. The extra 1.5" in length is a great start though.

I bought the jacket and pants (taking your reviews into consideration with my own research). I just got them and have only been out for one two hour ride. I'm impressed by the features, materials, and quality. And they're pretty comfy out of the box, which only means they'll get more comfortable as they wear in. Quick question: why don't you use the hydration pack holder in the jacket (but instead wear a backpack...). Just curious.

FYI i tested out the bladder holder feature, and found out that you really cant put more than a 1/3 of a full bladder in it, or else it puts a lot of downward force on the back of the jacket, basically pulling the front of the jacket into the neck, but that was just my experience..

Do they have the same replacement policy like KLIM? I was involved in a severe hit & run in Montana this past Aug. Was wearing a Klim Carlsbad jacket. The jacket was torn due to the severity of the crash. Klim replaced it at zero cost. That is a big deal to me.

I don't believe they do, no. BUT you can buy 2 sets for the same price as a Klim setup. Glad they replaced it for you. I've heard of people having trouble getting them to do that lately.

I am on my third Badlands pro suit, first one gave to son in law, 2nd one I had terrible crash nearly died, Klim replaced the whole suit and helmet for free, so I am on my 3rd Badlands pro suit and I have to say it is the best you can buy. I ride about 30,000 miles a year all conditions. I can ride in weather from below freezing to 90 degrees without a problem. It is better than the MSR suit but cost much more. With two nearly fatal accidents in last few years I think the suit held my body together. Bones still break.

I bought mine a year ago after watching yours and a few other reviews. This summer on a trip with my buddies it was pouring on the way home, my friends were in fancy KLIM gear and were soaking wet, they had to stop at a Walmart and buy a cheapie rain suit, I was the only one who was dry, with the exception of my hands because I didn't have water proof gloves and my boots. I've since rectified the boot problem with the MSR Adventure boots, but still looking for gloves if you have any recommendations! BTW - one of my friends sold his KLIM gear and bought the same suit as me!!

Outstanding update review on the Xplorer. I'm leaning towards this combo, but not sure if the Voyager would be better. I ride year round in Southern California, but plan on trips to Oregon at some point. I want good rain protection if I'm miles from nowhere in a downpour, but I don't know which would be more comfortable on hotter days. Price is not a decider. Any advice/input appreciated.

I wish these had been available when I bought my much more expensive Klim gear. I'll give them another look when my current gear eventually wears out in a few years. I also wish more riding gear came with belt loops like the Mosko Moto stuff. Unfortunately their pants were way too tight in the thigh and ass. Them boys be skippin leg day!

My biggest issue is finding the right size. I have a bunch of cheap gear I am currently using, but need to go try on some of the more quality gear to see what size I am currently fitting (I have lost weight). And no, Rocky Mountain won’t do free returns for those of us that are not in the contiguous United States. As I live in Alaska not the lower 48. And here we have very limited apparel options to try on. Though I plan on making a trip to Sacramento CA in April, I plan on finding a place that sells moto clothing just to try on some gear to see what currently fits for boots, pants, jackets and helmet brands that are not available here. Then make a list to see what to order. It’s really not fun sending equipment back in the mail, as shipping costs are so high here.

I've just taken delivery of the Xplorer jacket and pants and am very happy with both. But as you point out, the pants urgently need some suspenders. You noted that there are some that you've used successfully with these pants; can you provide make/model of these and perhaps a supplier? I ordered a pair of Carhartt suspenders from Amazon, which seem well constructed but the clasps do not grasp the waist of the pants firmly enough and the pants slip out. Thanks for any tips!

Dork, do you believe that the lighter color would be any cooler than the blue in the summer? I do like the Blue. In Blaine Wa mostly ride midis 70’s to low 80’s. I will up grade to this gear. I started out with Bilt so need to up grade a little without breaking the bank and seems you have the solution. Happy trails!

Hey Ben, how is the neck fit on these? In photo's it looks very oversized and loose which would lead me to think it would be an easy point for water. I have a larger (18") neck and have found most of the snap-closure collars on Euro brand jackets are tight for me so a larger collar would be nice so long as it's not too large. I've noticed that the Klim stuff looks to have a very loose fitting neck/collar area as well in photos, so maybe they're both just using pencil-necked models. LOL Anyway, since two of the zippers on my first generation Rev`it Defender jacket just gave up the ghost this weekend and getting my fat gut stuffed into the matching pants has become a losing battle I'm in the market for a new 3-season (fall/winter/spring) set of gear and am seriously considering this MSR set. Loved my Rev`it gear and just bought a new Air 3 jacket on clearance, but at this point their XXL is a little too tight with liners and a XXXL is too loose and sloppy fitting which results in the armor not being where it's supposed to be. Hoping a more American cut brand of gear will offer me a better fit.
