After much research and finding your video, I bought the MSR ADV set. Just did the first 1200 mile ride with it, and while I'm too busy to do a reply video to your review right now, here are my comments: 1. Overall VERY satisfied with performance and build quality and water-resistance (but we only had one day of rain). 2. While the built-in CamelBak pouch is one of my favorite features, the loop on the front right chest only is limiting - I really prefer my drink tube on the left chest. 3. The forearm zippers/vents with their associated internal waterproof structure REALLY dig into my inner elbows when my arms are bent for things like fastening my helmet strap, to the point of bruises. NOT AT ALL a problem while in a riding posture - only when bending my arms tighter than about 90 degrees. 4. Definitely buying some clip-on suspenders. The lack of a rear jacket-to-pants zipper is a downside, and only when tightening the pants beyond the point of comfort would they stay up when not on the bike. Again, no issue when riding my DL650 V-Strom; only an issue when off the bike. 5. Pocket options are kind of limited, but I'm used to the one-piece Aerostich suit I've had since the early 2000s. 6. Jacket vents are surprisingly effective (so long as you open the shoulderblade vents as well). Pant vents do a little, but not as much as I wanted. I would prefer some outside calf vents that allow air in and up across the groin. Many thanks for your detailed review, and judging from the comments on MSR's site, a lot of us found your review pivotal to our purchase decision. EDIT/Addendum: Other comments have mentioned how the left sleeve change/ID pocket was on the original Aerostich - they're right, and it's a GREAT feature. I still use the Velcro clear map pocket for the left sleeve on my Aerostich, and want to figure out how to add that to the MSR.

Your comments about the Pant's venting is exactly what I suspected...I have been very much wanting to buy the pants, but the venting scheme seems inadequate/ineffective especially because the ones that the pant does have do not appear to stay open for effective in/outflow.

EDIT: After some consideration I decided to take advantage of RMATV’s size exchange and to my benefit it looks like the large size jacket will be a good fit for me after all. Indeed I’ll ave the waist adjusters taken all the way in, and I’ll have room for a pressure suit and/or some layers. I’m looking forward to putting some miles on! I already see a few modifications to make to help ventilation in the hot times. As for the elbows: having the longer sleeves did help a bit, and having any kind of long sleeve shirt under the jacket helps a lot. Dang I was excited about this suit, but it just arrived and unfortunately for me it is a no-go. I'm 6'2" and 180 lbs, (so tall-ish and thin), and the reports that the MSR is more "American" cut while the Klim is more "Euro" cut seems to be true. The jacket: The Klim medium size jackets fit me like a glove with perfect sleeve length and a trim-yet-comfy fit, and the MSR medium only sits right around the middle with the waist adjusters tightened while the sleeves are significantly too short in the medium. If I moved up to a large I'm sure I'd be swimming in the torso area, and would provably even need the XL size to get the sleeve length right which I would DEFINITELY be lost inside. If it existed a Medium-TALL jacket might work better, but sadly it does not. So for you thicker dudes the MSR might indeed be a winner, but for me I'll have to keep searching for a budget-friendly new suit. Also: the elbow bend issue many have noticed on the MSR: it is AWFUL! From the reviews I was like "how bad can it really be?", but it is actually painful to wear, and would be annoying as hell and very distracting on the bike. And I AM willing to sacrifice some comfort for good protection, but this level of discomfort would be a potential hazard. The wrist zipper and superfabric and elbow armor adjuster all come together right on top where the elbow bends and I almost couldn't wait to get the jacket off. If the sleeve length was correct on me this issue might be lessened (because that area might be moved down the forearm and inch or two), FWIW... I got the MSR 34 TALL pants and the fit was pretty good, length was good, a little bit longer than jeans (normally I wear 33W34L pants/jeans). They also felt pretty baggy so the armor would likely swim around, but again: for you thicker dudes it might work out great. I hadn't seen anyone talking about it from a tall/thin guy perspective, so here it is. Thanks for the review Dork! I really wanted this suit to work, darn.

Lets be real, we all layer now. It's the way to go. I have been looking for a great outer 'shell' for relatively reasonable money. Most of the big brands are out due to money and a bunch of stuff I don't need, want. I don't want a thermal layer, I've got 5 of them. I don't want a rain liner...got a few of those too now. I don't need more armor...I've got a few sets sitting on my shelf. I DO need a solid, well made and durable outer shell for my adventure riding I plan to do early 2025. this might be the gear.

I've owned an MSR Explorer jacket (when it was Malcolm Smith Racing) for around five years and couldn't agree more with your assessment of the quality and the comfort this jacket provides. The D3O armor and rugged fabrics give me a sense of security I don't have with other jackets. It is heavy though (6.8 lbs.) and I don't like bothering with with the numerous vents to optimize temperature control so, on warmer days, I will usually chose to wear my FirstGear TPG Technical jacket which (4.4 lbs.) also has D3O armor and an added benefit of High Viz green color.

Welp, I completed the PA Wilds BDR-x. Wore the ADV jacket and gloves, both performed as I hoped. The jacket is wonderful, rode in torrential rain and snow, and I didn’t get wet, although the button pockets on the side will get wet eventually. I laid the bike down twice, no tears or damage to the jacket. I’m very happy with the jacket. The gloves are phenomenal for the price point. If you can find a better value for $50, please send me a link, as I’ll buy those gloves too. I took a pair of the adv gloves and my pair of KLim Klimate gloves and the tips of my fingers got cold after two hours of riding in the low 40’s with intermittent rain while wearing the Klim gloves. The Klim gloves were $100 and didn’t do as well as I was hoping. My only complaint with the MSR gloves, is getting them on if your hands are sweaty. The liners in the fingers tend to bunch up so you have to pull each individual finger up when taking them off if you want to get them back on your hands quickly. Very happy with the MSR gear.

I purchased this kit based on your snow ride review with your link. I am in agreement that this kit is great. Really great. I also agree on the not so good points. The for arm vent zipper is too long it digs into the bend of my arm. The neck opening, designed for a gorilla neck. I’ll call have to wear a gater to fill in the gap on the cold days here in lane county. I got the size I usually wear (32) in the pants and large in jacket. I need to send them back for larger because in the winter I wear a base layer to stay warm. Too tight of a fit. Also I wish RM would have designed in a more roomy seat. I’m a thin guy and the back of the pants pull way down when I’m sitting. But, all that said I can’t wait to get it back in a larger size. Its great stuff.

This looks great! I talked myself into a Knox Urbane Pro mesh motorcycle shirt recently. I loved the idea of the protective garment as the base layer with the armor worn over a thin polyester shirt and any insulation or waterproofing layered over that. Knox is a European brand and I'm an American so I bought a much larger size than the fit chart stated, to make sure it wasn't too small. It was too small. I have long but thin arms, and it was like a straight jacket. I had to fight a claustrophobic feeling as I tried to remove the jacket and the sleeves constricted on my arms like Chinese finger cuffs. The return shipping to the Netherlands was $65, which is a lot to pay to try on a jacket that I ultimately didn't want, so I appreciate Rocky Mountain offering one free return shipping on clothing purchases. When considering the weight, remember that the jacket and pants are waterproof so you don't need the weight or bulk of packing a rain suit. I like the added breathability compared to Gore-Tex. I mostly ride in warm weather where breathability is a good thing (in addition to the large vents) and I can wear a very thin windproof shell under the jacket if I want to be warmer... or I can wear my ultralight heated vest under the jacket.

I'm European, I take a large in Klim or xl in most Alpinestar or Revitt kit, but had to go XXL in the Urbane at 6 foot tall and 200 lbs [ get me doing US measurements] with a broad back 46" chest and a 34" waist so a pretty odd shape. I like the Urbane but even in xxl it kind of still digs into my back.

@@TheIdlesurfer - I loved the concept of the Knox Urbane Pro. Too bad it didn't work for me. Maybe if someone made the same tight fitting garment with sleeve zips as well as a front zip so it's loose when putting it on and taking it off. It's odd that there is American and European sizing. There's no significant genetic difference. Americans are just a lot fatter based on our bad lifestyle choices. That's embarrassing.

Just bought the jacket and I love it. I’m coming from Olympia gear and this gear fits me better. The KLIM and Olympia gear did not fit my short fat neck. The tall collars rub on the bottom of my helmet restricting movement. After watching your first video and your answer to my question I pulled the trigger. Glad I did it is great. @@scottfhscottfh I am 5' 10" 210 lbs. I have a 47" chest. My Olympia Ranger jacket is an XL and a little tight in the mid section. I have a some gut but not huge. The XL MSR has more room in the mid section and a little more in the chest. I was able to add a couple of layers under the jacket this weekend on my ride to Joshua Tree. My Olympia is to tight for anything more than a thin fleece under layer. Hope that helps

OK, just received a set of gear , here's MY first impressions on FIT only, (have not used it on a ride yet): I'm 5"11 or so, and 245 lbs , maybe 47/48 size in chest Typical motorcycle gear I would need to get an XXL or higher in order to fit me (think RevIt brand) , the XL jacket size is a PERFECT fit for me. Also, I would wear a pant size typically of 38/40 length x 30 inseam.. the size 38 MSR pant fits VERY well, and i swear feels almost tailored to fit me . Both still fit with base and midlayers underneath. The pants I could see getting a bit too tight IF i put on a few extra lbs, but the range of motion on these things is EXCELLENT! I do feel that tightness in the elbows a bit, BUT its not that noticeable for me, and honestly, if someone else hadn't pointed it out, i might not have even noticed it.. The material feels very tough, and that superfabric feels bulletproof... Those are my initial impressions on fit ONLY, not usage.. They seem like gear that will last me a LONG time, BUT time will tell The one question I have regarding the eVent fabric, is they say to 'wash it often' .. what is often? once a month, after every ride, twice a year? I'd be curious to find that out , otherwise by far, hands down, the burliest riding gear I've ever owned..

I am pretty sure that is the jacket I have as well and I am very happy with it so far. I have not been caught in a torrential downpour yet, I do have rain gear as well. The Sedici isn't Gortex etc. Price reflects that.

The wife got me a set in grey for my BDay and this stuff is awesome! I wouldn't be surprised if the price increases in the future. I found the sizing to be right on point. I saw a few loose stands but nothing excessive at all. I would like to see an option to zip the jacket to pants but no big deal. There is a bit of a pinch on the crease of the arm but PLEASE dont let that stop you because this is EXCELLENT gear for the price and even if it were more expensive!

Tempting but I think I'll wait it out for a version 2. Needs jacket and pants connection Needs some internal elastic straps from bottom of hydration pocket to over the shoulders like a backpack strap to support the pocket. With a full bladder in there the weight pulls the jacket back and down exposing the neck, I do want the pocket to remain external. Also and this goes for all adv wear manufacturers, adv riders aren't wearing motocross neck protection stop making these open neck jackets. I want a higher closer fitting collar. Do these have suspender buttons? They should. The lack of wind protection should be addressed, you can't be 4 season jacket if 3 of 4 seasons you will be cold, even with a midlayer. There are vents for a reason in warmer times. More and better pockets, another pocket on upper right chest, and some nice napoleon pockets just inside. Love the price,love the colorways add a sage brown/green tooplz, and love the style, reminds me of klims original adventure rally jacket.

Great review my friend. Through the years I have done the hodge-podge accumulating good gear that worked for me at budget prices due to circumstance.I have been riding back country for a tad over 50 years now- back when work boots/helmet/leather jacket and gloves was what there was unless racing. Through the years I have tried and added nearly every brand of something to my riding. I do not have Klim only because of the expense AND I have found hot/wet/cold gear that piece for piece and what I do to it (silicon spray, etc) that I have a large closet of specific gear for summer/WET/winter riding and other for nicer days/more road trip stuff/ride-hike-walk days, etc. It CAN mean from Bilt gloves, Leatt or LS2 helmet, EVS protective gear,Alpine Stars, TCX or Fly boots. And quite a few others. I got them on sale after checking reviews so was able to get pretty darn good gear for riding back in the mountains as a BDR Ambassador and a gear sponsored rider for EVS Sports protective gear with a wide range of gear yet always really good protection no matter the price point. I was a cop, raised five kids and still rode. That did not leave much money for gear but it IS available- maybe last years model- but it works. There is nothing wrong with getting what you can afford but should never feel like decent equipment is not out there at decent prices to put into gas and your trip.

They almost knocked it out of the park with this gear. It's a shame they didn't go level 2 with the armor and at least include pockets for chest Armor. So it's more of a really good shell to pair with an armored level 2 shirt.

Just bought a pair of pants only. Considering returning them without riding in them because of the gusseted fly. To take a pee one would have to undo the buckle, unzip the fly, then pull the pant down four to five inches to relieve yourself. Frankly, the function of the gusset escapes me. In rain it would collect water because the gusset forms a pocket inside the zipper. Thinking about having the pant altered by cutting the gusset then hemming the edges to keep the cut from fraying.

The gear looks good. But not sure you can compare this to what the battleborn was. I paid $185 for my battleborn jacket, and over 4 years later, it's still holding up perfectly - I like it even more than another Klim jacket I have. I don't think you can ask people trying out the sport, or just getting started to shell out $400 on a jacket. It's probably a great jacket for the price, and likely much better than the arc, it just doesn't represent the same value

Nice review, the MSR stuff looks like some good riding gear. its nice to know the sizes fit normal, since some other brands set all of their sizes to only fit "lighter" riders. I have the Alpinestar Andes v3 jacket, for the price it is great for commuting and adventuring. now i need a good pair of pants to go with it.

Excellent review as always! People should not underestimate the mid-tier (or even budget) options when it comes to apparel. It's often surprisingly good (just stick to reputable MFR's, obviously-fake gear is no bueno). I've been rocking a (relatively) cheap Sedici suit (CycleGear house brand) for the last three years and it's served me quite well in the mild-to-hot climates where I ride. I originally bought it as an emergency stopgap when the main zipper on my Aerostich broke right before a trip, but ended up liking it so much that it's become my primary suit. However, it's starting to show some wear and I'm planning a weeklong ride in Iceland. So I think it's time to upgrade to something more capable (especially more waterproof). I really didn't feel like spending a grand or more on Klim or Rev'It-good to know there is an option that basically splits the difference in price between those and what I have now, but is closer to the "top-drawer" stuff in quality! I agree that the lack of a connecting zipper is a bummer, and potentially a small hit to safety as well. Isn't the main purpose of that to prevent the jacket from riding up if you end up sliding feet-first on your back? I'm sure I've been told that...

I love a deal, Klim is never on sale it doesn’t need to be I have the badlands pro and Baja s4 suits the best gear I have ever owned…..but this is what I’ll be buying for my sons as they are starting on their own ADV riding careers RMATVMC is my go to for parts and luggage. Now it will be where I go for apparel . Thanks for a great review.

Timely review for me. I am actively looking at waterproof gear for my Alaska trip this summer. I currently have Tourmaster trek alpine gear, it’s nice but not waterproof. They do have a WP suit that is comparable in price to this MSR gear. I will check it out.

I saw this gear show up on RMATV a while back and it definitely looked good. Had I not recently gotten the Carlsbad, for a price that highly annoyed me for what it is, I would have jumped on this MSR adv gear. All of the MSR gear I already have is excellent. The velcro on my Olympia pants cuff works more than well enough. But i hem my pants to fit properly. Appreciate your review! Nice snow angels! 😂 And thank you Rocky Mountain for all the great stuff.

Hi Sir, I've been using the Aerostich Darin standard pants for 10 years, on my second pair about 3 years ago at $350 and custom fit to my 30' inseam and fat boy waist has worked well for me. I'm currently using the A.R.C. jacket thank you for your content.

@dorkintheroad : You said the i.d. pocket was stolen directly from Kilm; my first actual motorcycle jacket had that. 1st Gear (Hein Gericke) Stealth fighter in 1997. So yeah thats not Klim's I.P. And i seriously don't understand why all, or at least most Moto jackets have those. So useful. The MSR sounds like a great deal, its really too bad because I finally saved up and bought my first expensive all weather jacket, Rev'it Sand 4 last Christmas. It's a solid jacket, and i like it, but that looks like better jacket in the same price range, for a bit more you have a whole suit. Ah well. Good review tho, i'll have to catch more of your gear reviews (been watching your KLR vids so far)

I swear by a light wool outdoors shirt for my mid layer. The kind you get from say Fillson, Pendelton or another 100% wool woven or felted shirt. It breaths & is warm as long as you have a solid wind break. Sometimes the wind can cut through the zipper if you don't have good mid line coverage. On that note I really want a good off centerline riding jacket. Like the OG bomber style leather jacket or the newer Captain America offset jacket where the zipper or w/e closure is on one side of the chest.

There's Super fabric and there's Super fabric... the kind you get on Klim is sort of garden glove level Super fabric. That said the Klim Baja is a fantastic summer jacket... The Latitude jacket is great cold weather rain gear. This stuff at least looks the same as the Klim. Agreed with the pants to jacket zipper- essential.

Thanks for a thorough and honest review - typical of the Dork! If you do cut that gusset out, be sure and remove the garment beforehand. It probably says that on one of the long silken white lables sewn inside the waist band.

Rocky Mountain atv is a great company, they’ve given a lot back to the moto, sxs and atv community and I’m always happy to support them. Yeah they do copy successful products, but they also add improvements and then sell them at half the price allowing access to quality products for everyone.

Thanks for the review. Very good. Definitely considering this, and I'll use your links, so you get some $$. I was turned off by the comment of going to try on Klim gear to see proper fitment. I think it is unethical to use the brick and mortar stores for fitment knowing you will not be purchasing from them. Business owners have invested thousands in their locations and inventory. Let's not use them, but support them.

i dont know why i watched this ( I was looking at a dual sport DRZ before the chopper bug hit so uncle Al Gorithm probably suggested it ) however your review was excellent for this.I dont need it at all but your enthusiasm for the gear makes me want some and I like to ride harleys to bars! Thumbs up. If I ever get a DRZ I will look into this stuff if they sell them in aus. Good review

MSR Malcom Smith Racing has been around forever! Wore MSR off-road MX racing and their enduro jackets that could be taken off and worn like a fanny pack. Wouldn’t hesitate to buy anything from MSR.

Thanks for bringing this to us. Long term reliability is yet to be seen. KLIM has been around for years and the customer service is good as per reviews. Can you reference the suspenders you mentioned?

I disagree about the customer service. They refused to replace gloves after three months and stitching was unraveling in several spots.
