Hi Robert, I hope you are well. You said once that you like to hear what people are doing while they listen. Well... I have severe PTSD, and today I am having horrible flashbacks and just a pretty distressing day in general. However, I’ve been listening through a lot of your videos. Focusing on what you are saying and the fact that you have a lovely speaking voice really helps to ground me. I use your videos as a way to help me get through some rough times. So, that’s what I’m doing while listening, trying not to go crazy! 😅 (I’ll be okay soon, just in case anyone worries)

Hello from Washington state USA, I personally believe the rolling lands between the storm lands and dorne is almost the ecosystem of our state. The west is a rainy wet and often stormy Puget sound full of islands and harbors. Central Washington has large swaths of desert with south eastern Washington being a very one of a kind in the world glaciated rolling hills called “the Palouse”. With the Olympic mountains on the west, cascades in the center and Rockies in the east! Could be fantasy but then again... isn’t that what all of this is?! (Love your content!)

1:27:30 - Something I like about the idea that Jon was the result of a polyamorous second marriage is that it doesn't disqualify him as heir but at the same time it puts his legitimacy into question. What I think George R.R. Martin is going for is that all three theoretical Targaryen heirs will have claims but at the same time have reasons to doubt those claims. Aegon seems like the obvious candidate under traditional, Westerosi succession laws, but he may well be a Blackfyre. Daenerys' was Viserys' heir and before he died the Mad King made Viserys his heir over Rhaegar, so if the king can choose then Daenerys is the rightful heir, but that's an if and she's a woman. Finally, we have (probably) Jon. Who is also Rhaegar's son and who's lineage will probably be proven, imo, more strongly than Aegon's ever will, but at the same time he's the result of a polyamorous marriage. Under traditional, Westerosi marriage customs and the faith of the seven that's not allowed and he's basically just a bastard, but under traditional Valyrian customs that's fine. Especially because there is precedent for polyamory with Aegon the conquerer as a legal basis. So I think George has constructed this complicated tapestry where every Targaryen claimant has a point under some line of reasoning, and yet each also has reasons to be disqualified. And I think that is part of this idea of exploring the ideas of succession and basically letting the reader judge for themselves who has the "better" claim. And to get them all to have a reason to fight and/or distrust each other while the Others threaten life itself.

I read a post that actually said the opposite. That Elia being ok with it "robbed her of the little agency she had." Not using quote marks to be sardonic, it's just quoting the post I read. It's interesting how much depends on our interpretation of the text. That's a big part of why I come to these videos. I have my mental picture of events but then these videos and commenters come along with very different takes and totally reshape my own take on a character or part of the story. Elia is such an interesting character and I can't wait to see how Robert uses his encyclopaedic knowledge of ASOIAF to do just that!

I think there has to something at the site of the Tower of Joy other than cairns with bodies under them or nothing. It's one thing for Ned to not want to return or be reminded of the place, but to refuse to divulge the location so families could retrieve the bones seems over the top, even for grief. Either there's something there he can't remove that would reveal Jon's parentage or Howland did some sort of magic that made the bodies unrecoverable and there's nothing under those cairns and no bones to retrieve.
@Kippiddy3 жыл бұрын
I think Ned was trying to cover up jons birth by completely dissassembling the tower
@AllTheArtsy2 жыл бұрын
Exactly. It's one thing for him not to 1) be physically able to take all the bones home since so many died and he had a baby to think about first but and 2) not want to return there or be reminded of it again, but to not allow families to recover their loved ones? That seems intense. There has to be more of an "impossible" reason why those bodies cannot be recovered and why the tower itself was torn down.

The more I think about the Tower of Joy I have to think that anyone who survived the fight is with the Reeds. I think both Daynes and Willam Dustin survived the whole ordeal, maybe others. Ned has false memories of what happened because either/both PTSD and memory magic. They lost the war and if Robert knew the truth he would not stop until everyone involved was dead. There was only one option to save honorable friends and loved ones. The big lie. This is why the Daynes love Ned, the Dustins hate Ned, and why the tower isn't there anymore.

I have been thinking about why Ned didn’t take the bones back to the North. I think Ned killed all of his own men to keep John a secret.
@vaughnsingletary64103 жыл бұрын
I thought the same thing! Either that or they died in the battle with the KG but Ned was spared and the KG went into hiding.
@peaceblossom83 жыл бұрын
yesyesyes that is my theory too! I'm pretty sure it says only "they had been 3 against 7" in the book - but never explicitly stated the sides. I think Ned, Howland, and Arthur killed the other kingsguard and Ned's other men because the three of them knew about Jon's importance. Maybe Howland convinced Arthur that this knowledge was true, and that's how he saved Ned from Arthur, rather than through fighting. Arthur then honour-suicided because of betraying his vows. It would also explain why the Dayne family has nothing against Ned. Maybe Ashara knew, too, and maybe her suicide was also (partly) to make sure she couldn't tell the secret of Jon's parentage. Her having been close to Elia and also Arthur's sister could've been how she knew. It would also just make so much more sense that Ned feels such shame about this episode if he did something like that.

That’s no in his character at all
@peaceblossom83 жыл бұрын
@@morganguyer3053 I agree that normally not, but if the thing Lyanna wanted Ned to "promise her" was that he would keep Jon safe, maybe that's what led him to do it. This sort of thing going against everything he usually stands for would also explain why it haunts him so much.

I'm a recent consumer of your content and I'm finding it to be some of the most intellectually thought out and articulated material that I've found so far...good job. Question: The letter. You mention that it was most likely an amends of some kind and that Dorne was seeking peace. But given Aegon's initial emotional response to reading it, presumably rage. I have to ask, why would Dorne seek peace? Weren't they winning the war? From what I can tell, they had all the leverage thus far, up to and including the death of a dragon and one of Aegon's wives. What's Dorne's motivation for making amends at this time? As opposed to simply making demands. Keep up the good work.

What would have happened if Ned went to the wall. That’s hardly ever talked about. What would the dynamics at the wall have been if he went & what would have happened with the Free Folk and the white walkers. Would Jon ever be Lord Commander? What would Sam’s role look like? Alliser Thorne’s arc? What would have happened when Stannis came to the wall? Would Ned have stopped Stannis from killing Mance?

How much could Ashara really move around, even with boats and horses? She's a noble woman and queen's handmaiden. She wouldn't travel alone, and yet she somehow hooked up in the middle of a war with a guy fighting for the other side. Someone would have to cross enemy lines.

I never can understand fictional characters (maybe they exist in "real life" also) that voluntarily put themselves in dangerous situations and then get vengeful (or their people get vengeful) when it turns out badly for them. It was Oberyn's decision to fight The Mountain - no one else even suggested he do it. But when he gets killed in a fair fight (no hint of anything underhanded causing him to die, in fact he was the only one using anything underhanded in the fight) his family all wants "vengeance".
@Invictus_Mithra3 жыл бұрын
You have to consider the historical context to understand why they are angry. The Dornish have been resentful of the Lannister backed government since it's inception (they want revenge for Elia, etc). Oberyn's death is just an excuse for them to make the resentment more apparent. It's basically just adding more fuel to the fire.

Regarding a Dorne based ASOIAF series, I could see HBO seeing Dorne as the series to have a lot of scantily-clad people all having sex with each other. Which might turn out to be popular ala The Tudors.
