These are Dutch aircraft in the prewar Netherlands East Indies, as evidenced by the missing dorsal turret that was removed to improve fuel efficiency. The Royal Dutch Navy operated a fleet of these Dornier's out of their Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) base and when WWII began moved them to Darwin Australia. They flew with distinction and valor in he Pacific theater of the war.

I am in the Seattle area and collect works by a local artist Jacques Moitoret....who is amazing. I bought a large charcoal on paper of an airplane and identified it as a flying boat Dornier DO24. I couldn't be more thrilled with what I've learned about them.

I grew up and live in Northeast Seattle. At Mathews Beach there was a Pan Am Clipper dock and offices for the Alaskan Clipper. The first Clipper was the Dornier. I knew Jaques Moiteret and grew up with a huge surreal painting my father bought in the late 60s. This video is priceless!

Luftwaffe saw potential in the plane and bought some. Dornier 24s rescued 10000 pilots from the english channel during WW 2.

Although the Do 24 was built in Nazi Germany, it was designed entirely to Dutch specifications for use in the Netherlands East Indies. Despite its many fine qualities the Luftwaffe showed no interest in the Do 24 as it had only recently introduced several new flying boats. It was only after the German invasion of Holland in May 1940 when numerous examples were captured did the Germans take a serious interest in the Do 24. Their first models were several complete Dutch aircraft captured before they could be delivered to the NEI and those that were still on the production line.

@@gormauslander The Do24Att is an amphibian with a new wing and turboprops. In this video you see the Do24k which is a flyingboat only.

ter info mijn oudoom een Van Staveren was Vice Admiraal van de MARINE in Soerabaja en had deze vliegboten aan geschaft , ze zijn bij een Japanse Lucht aanval in Australia verloren gegaan.
