Third album I listen from Dorothy Ashby, third time I`m blown away by how good this woman is. We need more harp jazz in this world.

I'm a huge fan. She went to my high school. I got to see her in middle school. I have a lot of her stuff and it's out of print. I'm always happy to share good music.

Ms. Ashby just swings with such graceful force. Frank Weiss puts the crowning touch just floating on flute, and that rhythm section is anchored by the underated bassist Wendell Marshall. The just cook! Thanks for posting.

Great album thanks for posting. An earlier time in Dorothy Ashby's music when it was not seemingly swamped by an arranger (though the Rubaiyat is a wonderful exception) Recommend the Fantastic Jazz Harp of Dorothy Ashby LP to anyone

I too was a big Alice Coltrane fan....actually had some correspondence with her. She turned me into a giant harp enthusiast.....so much so that I came to realize She was really not an accomplished/ deft harpist --------as Dorothy is . Alice was incredibly creative in other ways , like introducing Asian instruments into the jazz world , and she pretty much coined the term "spiritual jazz". May they both rest in heavenly peace. Om Cassotta

Asians are northerneast africans , we are one back than and now ! Chinense founded harps in a cave , that present day people didnt know how to play their old instruments , be4 they lefted asian minor .

Ethereally recorded in 1956 by the master himself Rudy van Gelder for Prestige. Fantastic album of this amazing lady’s subtle swinging “American-songbook” tunes. Frank Wess’s flute floating, like pearl-droplets, above it all. Great nostalgic Jazz music of the highest swingingest calibre. Enjoy this gem & Cheers!

I'm interested to know how many chords are in these songs. Like is it mostly modal with the occasional shift, or is she really changing the keys very frequently. If anyone knows I'm trying to learn to play the harp this way
@juanicastillo40138 жыл бұрын
Good luck, you will need it.
@HannahKayW8 жыл бұрын
No, luck is never necessary, only passion and the dedication of time.
@zaxo2127 жыл бұрын
Neverward - she's following the changes to the song, just look up the charts online and figure out how to voice the chords then learn the scales/modes that are associated with each chord and play through them while going through the changes. then try improvising using those scales and chords you just learned
@zaxo2127 жыл бұрын
also of course learn the melody to the heads of whichever tunes you want to play, and if they have lyrics like Stella by starlight for example learn the lyrics as well. helps you keep you place in the changes if you can hum sing or think about the melody and lyrics while you play. nice little way to not loose your place
@HannahKayW7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the thoughtful reply those are excellent practice habits :) my jazz professor says a lot of the same stuff. It also really helps to listen to the song a lot! I will do as you say ^^
