Dorset's Jurassic Coast - Worbarrow Bay

This is the last of he mini series of videos exploring Dorset's fine Jurassic Coast with Dave Ford. To day we visit Worbarrow Bay, just down the lane from Tyneham Village.
Worbarrow Bay is a large broad and shallow bay just to the east of Lulworth Cove on the Isle of Purbeck, Dorset, England.

Had to laugh when Dave mentioned Logan returning with live ordnance in his mouth as it reminded me of the Darwin Awards story of a party of fishermen who went ice fishing and parked their 4X4 on the ice and being to lazy to cut through the ice one of the party had the bright idea to blow a hole in it with dynamite, he lit the fuse and threw the stick only to see his dog chase it and pick it up in its mouth, all the fishermen then started to shout at the dog who got so scared that he ran and hit under the 4X4 with the dynamite still in its mouth.....BOOM!

Thank you. Richard & I (& Logan of course) had a lot of fun doing the walks. We were so lucky with the weather - the sunshine really brought out the blue of the sea and the colours of the wild flowers that had just come out for the late Spring.

A great series of videos Richard, we've really enjoyed them. I know you can't guarantee the weather, but people pay thousands of pounds to travel half way round the world to get views such as that. With the accompanying beach full of sun beds, and pedalos.

I mean from Tyneham. It’s open most weekends but also on the days when no firing takes place. There’s a gate they open at 9am on any day they arnt firing. I know on several occasions I’ve visited throughout the week.

I use mostly a Gopro 7 at 25 fps on Linear Setting and I combine this with a Canon DSLR 200D.

Great end to the visits but I think your wrong about it only being open weekends as I’ve been a few times and certainly not always weekends.

Hi Stephen, You are correct. In general, Tyneham (where the most convenient car park for Worbarrow Bay is located) is not open during the week however there is a 6 week period in the Summer (last full week in July & all of August) and a couple of weeks around Christmas when it is open all the time (inc during the week). However, there are 7 weekends during the year when it is not open. For the purpose of the video, it seemed simpler to say "only at weekends" as our walk was following on from the Tyneham video (our car was parked at the Tyneham car park). Best advice, I guess, is to check their website (www.tynehamopc.org.uk/visiting-tyneham/opening-times) before planning a trip. I believe that you can access Worbarrow Bay beach itself via the South West Coastal Path which runs through the Lulworth range (ie OK if you are not needing to park nearby). The following website (www.gov.uk/guidance/public-access-to-military-areas#lulworth-ranges) states that "Worbarrow Beach is open to the public when the Ranges are open" but then in the next line is states "Red flags are flown/lamps are lit to indicate live firing during which time access is prohibited to the live firing Range Danger Area.". Worbarrow Tout has a large "No 3" target area sign which is right next to the beach / coastal path so without further investigation, I wouldn't know for sure on exact accessibility whilst live firing was going on! Certainly, the path that we used to get to the beach was in the Range Danger Area as there were plenty of signs to remind us along the route. Thanks for raising the issue though as it is something that folk will need to double check up on, if they are going to visit the area.
