Very interesting version of DosBox geared towards accurate emulation. Also they want to have users be able to run the older versions of Windows as well from 3x to 9x/Me. I am sure given enough time just like with Console emulation they will optimize their version of DosBox to combat the frame rate issues. Also another game that you could have tried out that uses PC speaker sound is Commander Keen.

Thanks for this, I wasn't even aware Dosbox-X existed... The real test would be the SVGA games like Screamer 2 (mostly this one), Carmageddon, Grand Prix 2 or Witchaven (Svga mode of course) It was a bummer downloading Screamer 2 and realizing most people with core i5's are not able to run the game smoothly. And to think that game ran fine on my old 486 (it was not even a pentium) I really hope Dosbox' developers break the final wall of emulation, for once and for all: SVGA
@troymcclure76935 жыл бұрын
I had Pentium 100 MHz at the time and Screamer 2 definitely didn't run smoothly in SVGA on that machine so I doubt it was 486. Even the first Screamer wasn't playable in high resolution on 486. But instead of the standard Dosbox 0.74-3, use a latest SVN build which you can download compiled for example on Dosbox ECE page (together with enhanced ECE build) or Emucr. Since the release of Dosbox 0.74, the developers did at least two significant and one small speed optimization and in my opinion, the SVN build is about twice faster than the standard build. On i5, anything for DOS should run fine in 640x480.
@FeelingShred5 жыл бұрын
Well now that I think about it, I think back in the day I would run the STARTL executable instead of START65H. From what I gather out of this, further optimization of the SVGA code will not be taken as a priority for the short term (or maybe it will now, that's why we discuss things after all) The problem I have with this approach (it's not really a problem, it's more my rambling and whining, I don't deny it guys, I'm on your side, don't take me wrong ok, there's just something wrong about the way I phrase things and I can't seem to change it, bare with me...) what was I saying... oh, the problem I have with the current approach is this: we should not be using 100% processing power out of our core i5, i7 or whatever it is to emulate games from 1996 or earlier. That is called lack of optimization. If there's one bad consequence from having all this powerful hardware available is that it can make people lazy. I know it's hard work and I'm learning "C" myself, I have a long way to go but hope someday I will be a contributor to Dosbox myself and hopefully someday I will learn enough to implement my own optimization. The intent of this is not bashing on anyone, it's just provoke some thought to the way things have been handled, I don't deny my approach is a bit confrontational but hey at least I admit it. My hero on the programming world is the guy who developed Banished from the ground up by himself (well, with the advantage of having the whole internet of 2013 to gather instant answers too, but you know what I mean) The game was the first ever 3D city builder game that rendered all units on the screen all the time, has a full 3D dx9 engine built from the ground up and only takes 200MB. That's engineering, that's optimization, that's the kind of stuff I'm all in for. It's easier said than done I fucking get it, but someday I hope we will see a perfect implementation of SVGA for Dosbox and not have to fry our processors for it. Oh, and John Carmack gets a lot of glory but there were guys along the way that were crucial for making Doom and Quake as optimized as they were to run on a 386 and Pentium respectivelly, he could not achieve it alone.
@Pixelmusement5 жыл бұрын
+FeelingShred Don't confuse high CPU usage for poor optimization or lazy coding. When it comes down to it, many of these old DOS games don't use anywhere near full CPU on a modern system through DOSBox. Heck, they can't. The nature of the emulation pretty much restricts the actual emulation to a single core, only able to offload a few non-critical, non-emulation-dependent tasks to other cores. So in that Descent II example, that's squeezing out 100 FPS on ONE core of my 8-core 4 GHz CPU pushing pixels through an emulation of a 256 colour SVGA resolution of 640x480. There's absolutely some serious optimization which went into making THAT possible! As for DOSBox-X though, it came to light after making this video that the Dynamic Core may be broken in the current build, which would explain why the framerate wasn't getting up there. If that's the case, I'll make sure to update those results when DOSBox 0.75 is ready and I run the comparisons again.
@FeelingShred5 жыл бұрын
@@Pixelmusement Ok, yeah that's true to some extent, I'm judging all of this from the standpoint of my laptop being a 10 year old core2duo 2.10GHz, in which case maxing one core means maxing half of my entire rig and making temperatures much higher than modern processors would have, so my observation it's schewed in that sense. But even then, there's something "broken" (for lack of a better word) in the dosbox SVGA implementation for it not being able to fully take advantage of our graphics cards and still rely on CPU power primarily. SVGA cards back in 1996 had 1MB, 4MB at most compared to todays GPUs, there's no excuse, there's something holding the code down either we like it or not.
@Pixelmusement5 жыл бұрын
+FeelingShred Yeah, it's called different architecture. The reason modern GPUs can push so many pixels is because they have hundreds (thousands for high-end) of cores. Each core individually is not very powerful, but all together make for a card that can push pixels WAY faster than the CPU can. In order to properly emulate graphics of any kind, the CPU has to push the pixels of the actual gameplay, all the GPU can do is adjust the final result for displaying on the screen, so there's your bottleneck. :P

What I really miss in DOSBox is changing configurations on the fly without needing to change the config file and restarting DOSBox. Like a small command line executable or something. I think I've seen this feature on a few SVN builds or even DOSBox-X, but I'm not so sure.
@Pixelmusement5 жыл бұрын
+Matthias Wichert You CAN do this in DOSBox-X as it has a menu you can toggle on and off and access all the config settings from there, however I've noted some setting changes take effect immediately, some don't take effect until you reset the emulation, while a handful don't seem to work right at all unless you restart the emulator entirely, so if you're trying to test various settings you still have a lot of work cut out for you. :P

The shortcomings of PC speaker and Adlib emulation on DOSBox show up prominently in the intro music (for PC speaker) and voice effects (for Adlib) in several titles from the classic Microprose era. To redress that I am weighing consideration of DOSBox-X vs a complete virtual machine package such as 86box. I'm still testing 86box and performance-wise both appear about equivalent with DOSBox-X being much more user-friendly while 86box is more the complete old-school PC experience.
@Pixelmusement3 жыл бұрын
Accuracy is definitely less of a concern when you emulate an entire DOS computer rather than just the DOS environment, but then performance becomes a potential problem. If you need emulation accuracy over speed, go with a full PC emulator, but if you want to have maximum performance so you can play the most demanding DOS titles, go with one or more flavours of DOSBox. :B

I have a few hundred physical discs and many more archived games (And by that, I mean games that I have in storage, but created ISOs and CUE/BINs of), and I've been slowly creating individual configurations for each game / program / environment. I've been using a mix of DOSBox DAUM, DOSBox 0.74, and PCEM to do so..... might be time to add DOSBox X into the mix and see how it fares. Honestly though, you should give PCEM a look. Yes, you are emulating a full PC, but it DOES have hardware support for some games that "just works" in ways that I just can't get DOSBox to even attempt. Granted lots of those are Windows 3.1, 95, and 98, and not DOS. It has basically meant that I can use DOSBox for DOS games, PCEM for older Windows games, and Windows 10 natively for everything else. There are really only a couple games I have yet to get fully working (Here's looking at you, Motocross Madness).

I have a problem with Dosbox-X that I have a lot of GoG games that used CDRom. Those come with ISOs in bin/audiofiles/cue format (well the .bin is renamed to .gog, but it's a bin), and in order for them to properly work, with music and everything else, you need to mount the .cue. On regular old Dosbox 0.74 you just "imgmount d file.cue -t cdrom" and it works. On X, it gives an error. Apparently it's a "simple" patch if you build Dosbox-X yourself, like, download the sourcecode and configure it to support this or that, and like, okay, but I don't have enough knowledge on building programs at home to do that?
@Pixelmusement5 жыл бұрын
+A Birb That's odd... You'll note I compared Descent II in this video which I have imgmounted as a CUE/BIN pair and it worked fine in both DOSBox and DOSBox-X. Not quite sure why you'd be having an issue like that although my best guess is it might be differences in how the path to the image file is being processed, in which case, supplying the full path to the image file and surrounding it in quotes may do the trick. (Instead of cdimage.cue it would be "c:\games\this game\cdimage.cue")

On the one hand, I have one dev assuring me that 0.75 is close to ready, plus even the main page on the website says 0.75 would've been out by now if not for certain things which took longer than expected, but at the same time, I have another dev who's seeing this video of mine as a passive-aggressive attempt to push 0.75 out faster and is otherwise upset at me over it, but then I have people like you and several others who've been badgering me to just flat out switch to DOSBox-X. The position I'm in here feels incredibly stressful and is going to leave a lot of people unhappy with me no matter which avenue I take and is kinda making me want to just NOT make videos, but then I have no income and am out on the streets because I have a sleep disorder which prevents me from keeping a normal job. THIS is the insane stress I'm going through right now trying to deal with all of this so please, please, PLEASE try to avoid adding to it... please.

PC-9801 is what DOSBOX X does very well. Well at least at all. I like it better than some other emulators because I am just use to DOSBOX more than other 9801 emulators. now keyboard layout and special characters are hard to get use to but that is just the pains of a foreign language and alphabet computer. I wish they would integrate the text and not need a separate file for that within the folder though. Breaks some of the portability of the emulator and its versatility for batch files and other such configurations.

And about Mechwarrior 2 engine, I find interesting that the Mech2 engine (DOS) was later used on Interstate 76 (which is a Windows game) Is the source code for 3D engines interchangeable between DOS and Windows like that? (for people that know about the subject this question may sound really dumb, I apologize in advance) xDD

+FeelingShred The mechanics are easily ported, the rendering of graphics and audio is not, although porting audio is generally way easier.

Mechwarrior has a Windows 95 version that came out half a year after the DOS version. It supported Direct3D, Glide, TCP/IP 8 players and more Joysticks via DirectInput.

Personally, I always use dosbox-staging unless there's something that doesn't work very well. It's focused on ease-of-use, modern code standards and build system, decently documented, has a bunch of features I really appreciate, has very responsive developers, always has clear rationale for why things are integrated, and is developed using all the standard practices you're used to on Github. And I feel the developers take the cross-platform nature of DOSBox more seriously than some other projects. It's the best attempt yet to provide a go-to place for continued DOSBox development IMO. The only time I've used DOSBox-X recently was when I needed 3dfx/voodoo/glide emulation, which staging doesn't have (yet). But that's a very rare use-case. I've also DOSBox-Pure as well, but that was on the (very) rare occasion I wanted to play a gamepad-centric game (almost never happens), because controller support in RetroArch is excellent.

Please check out my port as well if you haven't already. It supports pixel shaders for ultra-fast video output at all resolutions, CRT scanline emulation, and accelerated bicubic 2-pass filtering. Based on the 0.74 codebase. More info here and instructions here: www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?f=41&t=48303&p=500777 (I'm also happy to help with configuration if needed.)

All I want to know is that if DB-X can run Alpha Waves/Continuum without glitches of either graphical (common dos modes) or timing (tandy mode where the timer that is supposed to count down roughly every second counts down way too fast) so I can finally play it properly. This video doesn't answer that question 😬😡😠

+Dead Mouse Running DOS itself on modern PCs can be troublesome at best and an extremely bad idea at worst due to the way modern hardware functions. It's not unheard of to lock up your SATA controller, disable cooling fans, or be completely unable to boot any games which run in a 320x200.resolution. Heck, once I had to replace the motherboard in my Windows 98 machine I started having issues using real DOS and discovered that DOSBox actually ran my DOS games better anyways. (Yes, DOSBox works in Windows 98.) Also, MoSlo is not very accurate and often results in speed fluctuations. :P

All versions of DosBox really need to focus on borderless window performance, and maintaining proper aspect ratio. I can't imagine many people who like running anything in dedicated fullscreen these days. I know I hate it, and I'm sure I'm not alone. Hopefully upcoming releases may address these issues. They are rather important.
@Pixelmusement5 жыл бұрын
+Datriax Sondor Unfortunately, a lot of it has to do with what Microsoft has done with Windows 10. Most people are not experiencing the same problems I am, otherwise it would've been blatantly obvious and Microsoft would have fixed it. As far as I can tell, it's my specific combination of hardware combined with the changes Microsoft has made to Windows 10 since launch which has led to these issues for me and there's not a damn thing I can do about it until Microsoft finally identifies and fixes the problem with an update as I don't have the cash to simply put together a new PC with different hardware. :/
@datriaxsondor5905 жыл бұрын
@@Pixelmusement Ya, understandable. Was mostly thinking out loud, in terms of wishing. Win10 is a perpetual blunder imo, screwing up a lot of things, as I remember plenty of problems I faced with DDraw in particular, among others. Rather tired of the "service era" already. The era where, just because something works today, doesn't mean it will tomorrow. Especially with Win10. Still, hoping something may change in the near future, in order to bring borderless around with zero side effects. Would certainly be nice.
@Pixelmusement5 жыл бұрын
+Datriax Sondor The DirectDraw deprecation thing was ever since Windows 8. As for the windowed gaming shenanigans, that started with the introduction of Game Mode. Until then, performance with windowed gaming on Windows 10 was perfect for me. :P

@@Pixelmusement Hooray, a heap of virtual currency. :) Oh and it reminds my of one of the last scenes in 'Street FIghter' movie where they loot Bison's treasury and find out all the money is worthless M. Bison dollars. BTW. ``Win10 being weird`` and ``switching for different emulator`` Sometime it's just hard to get an all around emulator working in all the cases perfectly, especially when we periodically change OS or hardware and the emulators can bug out even from that. And it probably will get worse as time progresses. That's why some people, like LGR like to have actual period machines to use for older games. For example I run into problems recently emulating some CPS2 games, like 'X-men vs Street Fighter' where the emulator I was using would lock up on reaching final boos stage, but only on a 64 bit (on my previous 32 bit one it worked just fine). Getting an actual cabinet is not really feasible but a different emulator did solved the issue.
