My guess is that he is actually a Protector, whose role is to protect the body at ALL COSTS, but Marc's self-loathing bleeds into Jake, so he leaves as soon as he isn't needed, because fronting when he doesn't need to fight just increases that guilt, and though that leans close to the trope, it would be better than just a straight up serial killer.

False, sorry. There is no original. People with DID always explain it with the glass bowl analogy. If you drop a glass bowl and it breaks into pieces, which piece is the original? There isnt one because they are all the original and no longer the original. All the alters are just splinters of the whole. The comment that said the original is the host is also false. The host is whoever can cope the best. And sometimes hosts have been known to switch due to a triggering event so just because the alter you see most right now is the host now doesn't mean they were the host during childhood or during the teenage years. They may have had to become the host in order for the system to be able to cope.

Watching this episode was like re-living trauma from my childhood. It was very difficult and left me hollowed out afterwards. Watching reactions all day has been the only thing keeping me sane. Hearing people who aren't broken by trauma react to the terrible things that happened to Marc and Steven, and show kindness and empathy, really makes me feel understood, and I have spent my whole life having never been understood. My own siblings think I'm "the favourite". Yet I'm the only one who was ever hit with shoes, and stomped on as I lay on the ground crying. I'm the one our dad collected sticks for, bringing them home even when I was good, in anticipation of beating me viciously the next time I'm bad. I'm the one our mum called a dog more often than she told me she loved me. I haven't thought about that in a long time, yet it has affected every decision I've ever made. I wish I'd had a Steven, to protect me like that, to have my back, and tell me I didn't deserve what they did to me. Sorry, I didn't intend to be such a downer. Fantastic video. Love the points you both make during and at the end. Only thing I'd add is that this definitely takes place after the snap, as the GRC had an ad on the double-decker bus in Episode 2. The GRC, from what I can tell, was only established after everyone was snapped back (to reality) in order to get displaced people back into homes and help rebuild what they'd have lost in 5 years of absence.

@rnkelly362 жыл бұрын
@@pineddew I would say yes and no. The alters are all different but there is only one system. The system is what Marc has to put together and reconcile. This is a fictional story trying to use DID to tell a story. In real life yes the personalities are different but the system or the space of all the personalities is how we deal with the person we know. I am trying not to talk in terms of personal experience but at least from my perspective you deal with a DID system as one person but you experience it through each personality. It's fascinating to me how everyone thinks of Harrow when all those prejudged souls are raining down upon the Duat, but rarely anyone is connecting this to Ammit. It is clearly not Harrow doing the reaping, he totally must have resurrected Ammit by this point, and became her avatar in the process. So all this devouring of souls business is clearly Ammit's doing, not Arthur's.
@Galaxia72 жыл бұрын
19:45 I think the 'there is no original' is more philosophical/consideration for the alters than anything. DID isn't (just) genetic. It's not something someone is born with. It has to come from (usually) repeated trauma at a young age. So before these traumatic events the person only has one 'personnality'. Marc was that person before he experienced the traumatic events. Maybe it'd be better to say who they were born as instead of 'the original' ? Idk myself. I usually use the word 'host' (but that doesn't always mean the 'original' it means the alter that is the most often fronting) to describe Marc. The idea of there being no original can also come from the fact that DID affects memories and perceptions a lot. It's often, if not always, accompanied with amnesia. Alters can also modify another alters memories, like we've seen in that episode with Steven. In the birth of an alter, there's elements of who was child!Marc that went into Steven and left 'Marc'. So Marc too was 'modified' in different ways. The Marc of before the traumas isn't the same Marc of after the DID started (and I'm not talking about the obvious reasons here but the 'sharing' of who was Marc between Steven and the 'new' Marc). In that sense yeah there's no 'original'. But there's still an alter who was born as Marc, experienced that trauma, subconsciously created alters to deal with that trauma, and still identifies as Marc today. So for the sake of brevity, we can say Marc was the 'original/host'. I like how informed on DID you seem to be. It's very welcomed among reactors who watch this show! It's also why I don't think the message of the episode was that Marc had to 'let go' of Steven. Marc *just* started the healing process in that episode (I know in fiction everything is accelerated but still). Fusion can happen between alters but that didn't look like a fusion at all, and alters can't die. Marc seemed very desperate to get Steven back and distressed to have lost him. I think the answer lays more in a supernatural/philosophical/comic direction. Now that they've teased the appearance of Jake a few times, so many people were expecting to see him in ep. 5. For him to not show up, to our knowledge, means he'll have an important role to play in the final episode. Marc is now in the field of reeds, not where he wanted to go, and as stuck as Steven is. I don't think there's s way for him to come back, unless there's an alter who joins back with their body, and by coming back to life, brings them back with him by extension. There's only one alter left on that boat who could do that.

Something I thought was interesting, Marc (When he's ranting about the psych ward.) actually name dropped Crawley, the character who's credited as the street performer(Statue guy.) that Steven would talk to, who in the comics was a homeless man who worked with Moon Knight as a street informant. Also, I think we do know that this is 'post snap' because a bus (I believe) in an earlier episode had a banner for the institution that was helping people deal with coming back from the "un-snap" or whatever we were calling it when Bruce brought everyone back.

The "third one" (Jake) is the trauma holder of the system. Neither Marc or Steven knows he exists. That's why they past the sarcophagus without looking at it and why they both exit the room when Marc's mom beats him. Steven is here when Marc can't handle the mental pressure (his panic attack in his room, his total breakdown in the street), Jake is here when the violence is too high (his mom beating him)
@ot7biasedmashups2 жыл бұрын
With DID there *is* actually an original. You aren't born with it, it gets forged through repeated childhood trauma. It can only manifest during childhood because that's when you're slowly getting personality traits, interests etc. When your mind is under extreme stress at that time certain characteristics get split off. Each alter becomes their own person then and they each develop differently. Some might stay children forever while others (like Steven) age at the same pace as the host. Steven's role is a spiritual protector where he fronts when Mark is under extreme stress (especially emotional stress). That's why he doesn't remember any trauma at all.

I know I'm a little bit late to the party, but as an Egyptology nerd I wanted to offer some explanation just to help you guys understand what the weighting of hearts ceremony does, the outcomes, and what the Duat and Aaru (Field of Reeds) actually are, at least from a mythology standpoint. The Duat was not considered Hell in the way monotheistic religions portray it with all the hellfire and anguish and whatnot. The name in Egyptian is actually "dwꜣt", a biliteral word combining "under" and "world" (which some still debate, but either way it's words similar to that meaning), but it makes it more like a form of purgatory than anything. The link people make to it being like hell is mostly because of it being a subterranean realm, just like where the location of hell is described in other religious texts. Every soul goes to the Duat for judgment. For those who have hearts lighter or in balance with the feather, they are allowed to leave the Duat and ascend to Aaru, where they live their afterlife in eternal peace, prosperity, and rest. Aaru is similar to heaven, but it's more of a paradise full of an abundance of crops, wealth, and prosperity. Ushabti figurines (or in this context, it's actually shabti figurines) represented servants who would help the deceased do manual labor or chores when they reached Aaru, allowing them to rest and relax peacefully without the worry of having to tend to the crops or make food. For those who are unbalanced, they remain in the Duat to wander eternally, facing constant challenges as they try to find balance, some never finding it at all and remaining frozen in sand, consumed by their guilt. This is why Marc began to turn to sand in the finale, it was the guilt of not being able to save Steven weighing down his heart. However, if a person's soul is able to heal and shed the guilt weighing their heart down, they can petition to be judged again. If they are judged again and their heart is lighter or in balance with the feather, they are reincarnated for a second chance to reach Aaru with that life. They retain no memories of their first life so as to not influence the true nature of their soul with the result of their initial judgment. Marc had already made it to Aaru, so he was not reincarnated or judged again, he was just yeeted back into his body through Osiris' gate. However, if the person is deemed unworthy with a heart heavier than the feather, their heart-and essentially their soul-is fed to Ammit and consumed. The person's very being is destroyed. No afterlife, no second chance. And that, to the Ancient Egyptians, was a worse fate than any hell a monotheistic religion could create.

Marvel has already said Moon Knight is planned for more MCU stuff to my recollection. And with Blade and Elsa Bloodstone coming in, I feel like we may be getting Midnight Sons eventually. A team of supernatural-oriented Marvel characters that I really hope to see. Also, this is definitely post-Blip. Ads for the GRC from Falcon and the Winter Soldier are visible in Episode 2. An organization specifically formed after Endgame to help displaced people who returned from being snapped.

@@larryfoulkeofficial8609 Not entirely correct. He's not in the current incarnation of the team, but he has historically been a member of said team. As Mr. Knight, yes, but that's still him. Even if he wasn't in the comics, the MCU could justify it via his supernatural angle as this universe has repeatedly done its own thing. Fully original characters with no comic roots, blending elements of both mainline and Ultimate Marvel together, combining attributes of different characters or giving them fully different personalities (depending on the character)....Just saying. I don't know. Much like with Young Avengers, I feel we're getting a drip feed of characters who make up part of a famous team or who could qualify for said team in the MCU's version because they're planning on eventually just giving us a project(s) that fully forms it. We'll see where things go as time goes on.

@@larryfoulkeofficial8609 I heard Doctor Strange was the trick from that promotional cover who wasn't a true member of the team. (He formed it, but he doesn't directly participate in their missions) That's also not fully correct, though. The Damnation storyline from 2018 had Moon Knight in its Midnight Sons roster. Even if it was true, what of it? It's arguing semantics. That doesn't change that this is the MCU and non-traditional members who fit the mold could be a part of it in this version of said team. We don't know if they are setting up Midnight Sons for sure, obviously, but the characters announced for that MCU Halloween special...Blade having a recent voice cameo and appearing fully later..Yeah. It's not quite yet at the level of all the Young Avengers teasing with all the previous live action D+ shows each having a character from that team, but they're definitely setting up something with this film/tv franchise being the epitome of 'long-term set-up for big payoff later'...or it's coincidence. We'll see.
