What's dope is, through out the entire season, from episodes 1 to 4, everyone is clamoring for Marc to appear to protect people, whether it's Layla or Steven from physical harm. But then you realize that Marc created Steven to protect his innocence, his image of what a family is supposed to be. And in the end, when Steven finally realizes what his purpose was, he confronts then comforts Marc, telling him that everything is gonna be okay. Damn terrific acting.
@brittneyashley58882 жыл бұрын
It’s the way Marvel foreshadowed this in Episode 1 when that little girl in the museum said: “did it suck for you? Getting rejected from the field of reeds?” 😩😩 LIKE THE PAINNN Also, does anyone notice how Marc curated Steven around his little brother? Like the aspects of their relationship? Their love for Tomb Buster, the one-finned goldfish, the older and younger sibling dynamic Steven and Marc have throughout the series. Also, not to mention laters gators, one of the good things he remembers about his mom. It’s all just brilliant!
@m.jadejohnson-williams33152 жыл бұрын
It feels like Marc almost treats Steven like a little brother (maybe subconsciously he wants) that he wants to protect from getting hurt and get crushed by the weight of the world. I'm also thinking that Jake is in the first scene with Harrow with the broken nose because the accent and mannerisms are so different from Marc and Steven. Along with the fact that we are aware that Jake is willing to do anything to protect everyone from harm and the person talking to Harrow at the beginning is willing to injury themselves or Harrow despite the consequences.

DID is usually the result of sexual or physical abuse during childhood also emotional abuse/neglect as comments have said below (thanks!). In DID, each alter is a vessel/container of the trauma experienced by the child. Basically, an alter was created because the child could not handle the severe sustained trauma that he/she is experiencing at the moment so he/she created an alter to basically take over the mind and body. DID usually happens in childhood because that is the time when we are sort of piecing together different traits/characteristics that we’ll develop as we grow up into one whole personality/identitiy, but in DID this process gets disrupted and shatters into pieces, hence, the creation of alter/s.In order for the mind to survive from the trauma each alter may lock up the memories of trauma, and it’s up to the primary alter/host (Marc) to access that whenever he/she is ready. Steven is seen as the protector of the system so like Marc said he is there to essentially be a "stressball".I like how Moon knight represents them as needing one another because without they would essentially be unable to cope and if need be there will be more alters in the system as hinted at in the episodes. Also in the first ep the girl told Steven whether he was mad that the afterlife rejected him, the foreshadowing 😭😭

I’m pretty sure that was Jake (the third personality) in the first scene with Harrow, the one that gets sedated. I don’t even know how I didn’t realize how different Oscar Isaac acted from both Marc and Steven. He has like a Brooklyn accent and his eyes and facial/body expressions are very different. He’s also more violent than both of the others as he was gonna stab himself in the eye. I think that Jake is the one who would come in and protect Marc and Steven from the beatings their mom did to them, which would explain why Steven doesn’t remember their mom being abusive. And it would explain why he’s the most violent one

everytime things went south so bad, the overwhelming pain summoned Steven into body so that feeling could stop. at the memory of their mother's shiva, Steven knew his purpose that was to comfort Marc all along. when Steven fell onto Duat and balanced scale after they accepted each other, the moment Marc needed to let go Steven to be peace in afterlife. the episode is so heartbreaking and i want my Steven back.
@AllieKitaguchi2 жыл бұрын
Steven never noticed that no one was answering the phone for the same reason he never realized that he had lived in America, or was in the Marines--the amnesia barriers in his mind fabricated right over it so that he would be able to live the "happy" life. From what I've read about DID and seen people theorizing is that Steven fronted when Marc couldn't handle the stress or emotional pull of everything (hence being the stress ball), but Jake was the one who took the physical abuse (which would explain why Steven doesn't remember what happens in the bedroom and would also explain Marc's blackouts when he was in the military). It seems that for Marc, he was able to live a lot of his life post-Khonshu in the body because when he was with Layla, he was happy and with Khonshu, he's essentially immortal. But, with the trauma of his mom dying, it severed the barrier between himself and Steven, making the blocks between them thinner and thinner until Steven was fronting more often than not. Plus, with Marc realizing that Khonshu wanted Layla (or so he thought) he needed to "disappear", and therefore let Steven take the reins until Khonshu summoned him.

I like how in this episode it really showed how marc is able to accept his fear and finally take a good look of his life. Steven being gone isn't because of an unfortunate death when he fell over, it is Marc finally letting go of the facade since the entire episode was about how the two have finally merged together. Steven's death shouldn't be a sad one since this is Marc finally being freed from Chaos
@metallicnole45142 жыл бұрын
I believe the treatment for DID is to reintegrate all the alters back into the original. Steven represented an escape from marc's trauma that he failed to confront and deal with. Though I don't believe that steven is truly gone since the multiple personalities are such a defining characteristic of marc spector/moon knight. It would be like if matt murdock were able to see.

This episode was sad but I was always curious to the timing of Mark developing DID and this was so well done with the different memories which were relived in this episode for us to make it seem like it all just happened for us to experience it 😭 Like I don't think it would've played with my emotions as much if I just imagined it myself once we found out the backstory in words 😭🥺

Steven will come back, he will! He can't be parted from Marc, that's not how it works. His alters can disappear momentarily but they always come back, they're always with him. Even if Marc has come to term with some of his past, Steven's reason to exists isn't gone. Steven is still a person. I think - I hope - that they're doing like in the comics where Marc had to face the final step alone. But he reunited with his alters later. I really hope that's what's happening. Some people said that once Marc joins back with his body his alters will be there since they're part of him. And I really hope that's what's going to happen. They can't just en the series without Steven. They just can't.

So, this episode was an ordeal… to say the least. Hardest MK episode to watch in my opinion. But, it’s good to finally get to know and understand Marc Spector. I now understand why in the press interviews the show is about trauma and healing. Marc couldn’t tell Layla the truth out of fear (whether he was aware of it or not) because of what his mother did it to him. Mothers are our first introduction to love. So Marc’s mother is why Marc, as Harrow said in episode 3, doesn’t think he’s worthy of love. I also feel like his hesitation towards telling the truth is something he learned from his father, who made excuses for Marc’s mother. I don’t know what his parents’ relationship was like, but he failed him to.

In addition to the emotional/physical trauma aspect of why Steven exists, I think he might also partially be a manifestation of Marc’s guilt. Kinda got that feeling when Steve reassures Marc that what happened wasn’t his fault. Because of that Marc started to let that guilt go a little/forgive himself, and because he did, I feel like we were gonna lose steven after that occurred. And because Marc let go of his guilt literally and figuratively, the scales balanced. Idk if that made any sense.

I just realized after watching just about every reaction video on KZbin, as well as watching the episode itself three times, that we have three scenes with Dr. Harrow; In the first scene with Harrow at the beginning of the episode (New York accent, broken nose, attempting suicide) Marc is actually Jake Lockley, in the second scene he is Marc, and in the third scene he is Steven. The Jake personality is not acknowledged though and everybody, including Harrow, is assuming it’s Marc. The scene with Jake is also happening simultaneously while the other two are meeting Taweret in the Duat, while the other two scenes happen after one of the other two personalities has a breakdown, and nothing happens in the Duat while Dr. Harrow helps them process their emoptions.

I kinda had that hunch since the beginning I speculated that maybe Stephen was a representation of Marc’s innocence that he wanted to preserve She clearly loved Randall more What if Marc was the one that died that day and Randall lived would she have treated Randall the same way This episode clearly implies that Randall was always her favorite This actually explains so much why he’s so protective of Layla and why he kept pushing her away The guilt he carried over losing his brother he projected onto other people he cared about Oh and I knew that the mom he referred to was Marc’s mom and not Layla or Marc faking This episode got me thinking It’s probably unlikely but what if Wendy is tawaret or her avatar in the underworld Because of the comparison and transitions and parallels they kept showing between Wendy and tawaret What if being in the underworld she learned the error of her ways and slowly turned into tawaret animorphs style and she is helping marc out of guilt and as a way to make amends Probably a stretch but interesting to think about Will Marc stay dead will tawaret give Layla the message will Layla continue on in future mcu projects as Marc’s successor Oscar Isaac only signed on this one show That would be a cool way to continue the legacy of moon knight as a way to keep the character around With phase 4 being so female focused I can see that happening and making a lot of sense DID isn’t seperate hearts it’s different aspects of the same soul Stephen is MARC’s innocence manifested as a person but it’s still MARC’s The using of the hearts was metaphorical for their intentions

What a superb imagining of the Egyptian Duat, where all the sins, failings & regrets of your life would be held against you. And yet another masterful, emotional performance from Oscar Isaac! Since Marc’s soul seems to have finally arrived at the Field of Reeds at the end, I guess we have to assume that his Ba (character) will be rescued somehow in the final episode. I now wonder if the ancient Egyptian notion of the soul (split into at least five aspects) is a actually meant to be a mirror somehow of the personalities of Marc Specter?

Steven dying was sad but in the end its the best thing for marc who is the original and thus its his life. That's why the scales balenced because he could be judged as the one man he is. Isn't the whole point of therapy to conquer what creates your insanity.

Yeah, start with the alternative, make you love the character and rip him away like this!? I think he’s not gone because he heart didn’t disappear off the scales, not that I know how any of this works
