I was a mailman in the 90's. It actually WAS pretty rare. And I wouldn't have pressured anyone who refused delivery. I was always like, "OK, that's fine". I DID have a problem with a woman who was uncertain though. She wanted me to stand there waiting, while she opened it. THEN she refused delivery. Even though I told her I couldn't take it back once she opened it. She argued with me for 10 minutes about it. I told her she had to repackage it and pay for new postage to send it back. She didn't like that.🙄

I recall Seinfeld talking about this episode during an interview. He said the idea came from a member of the shows production staff. She was at a doctors appointment and noticed that "difficult" was noted on her medical chart. So, this was a real thing.

Since you asked, and as a mail carrier, I can tell you that you can refuse a package. Also, I know you didn't ask, but anything to do with tampering with the mail or packages sent through the post office is a huge deal. It's a federal crime and could lead to an investigation by the federal marshal's office not by Newman at your local post office :).

You have to do the 2 part finale in the last season. Even if fans hatted it. It is just a bizarre ending but fits with the randomness and sillyness off the show. Only in Seinfeld.
