Okay, I'm not seeing a real explanation in the comments, so here goes: The Today Sponge entered the market in 1983. It was a small, white, very soft sponge about the size of a walnut, with a little looped string attached (for easier retrieval and removal). It was saturated with spermacide. So it offered both a physical barrier, AND a chemical barrier. It was inserted just prior, and remained effective for 24 hrs. However, it was not to remain in place longer than 30 hours. The sponge was discontinued in 1994 after FDA inspectors discovered bacterial contamination at the manufacturing plant. However, I can tell you that *I* remember it differently: I thought it was taken off the market because, if the sponge was accidentally left in the body for too long, it could lead to Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS). TSS can be fatal. Perhaps the bacterial contamination was the actual cause of the TSS, but I thought it was due to not removing it within 30 hours, and I'll bet that lots of other women thought the same thing. I never knew until now that it was reintroduced in 2005 under new ownership, but the company went bankrupt in 2007. A new distributor picked up the product in 2009 and it has been sold nationwide since then. It was the best birth control product ever! At that time of my life, I related very strongly to the attitudes of the women in this episode, LOL!

Bruce Vorhauer, the inventor of the Today sponge, died by suicide in his car across the lake from his island mansion on Salmon Lake in Montana back in 1992 at the age of 50. I think of this episode every time I drive by that island home. Bruce's story is a sad one.

Also worth noting: Today's Sponge got pulled when the FDA changed the regulation on Sponge production due to cases of Toxic Shock Syndrome. The product was sold and sent west where the water could not meet the proper standards for production, causing a brief end for Today's Sponge in 1995. Less than a decade later, the brand finally had a comeback, but equipment failures and the supply chain issues caused by the pandemic shut down the brand again. And a Sponge is only good for 24 hours or until removed, but is useful for multiple efforts. Other brands are still on the market, so this is worth sharing. Also makes it odd that Elaine was not willing to go for a second round unless it was just an excuse to end the relationship. As to George's comment about the difficulty of opening the wrapper: a Sponge can be applied ahead of time, but a male condom has to be applied in the moment. I stress "male" because around the time this episode was made, the female condom hit the market. Also, despite what _Roseanne_ would have you believe, a Sponge is *not* protection against STDs. Last I checked, the only contraceptive that also protects against STDs is a condom (male or female).

I always found the AIDS ribbon part of this episode to be a bit crazy until the last few years where I refused to wear the "I voted" sticker. I was kind of surprised to find some people being kind of hostile to that decision although at least I wasn't chased by an angry mob.
