I get that you've raised the Beefy Boys from start to finish & it's a great accomplisment for you. And I also get that the meat will provide many, many meals for you & the boys. But . . . I'm feeling sad and I'm gonna really, really, really miss them. 😟
@Raven967843 жыл бұрын
@Julie Donohue It's never easy even as adults. We had feeder pigs plus we'd purchase 2 little bulls and we would raise them up and sell one to get more calves and butcher out what we didn't sell, butcher would take part as payment. It was rewarding as an accomplishment. But, was a horror for the children. They would ask before sampling anything. "Is this Arnold.. or Is this Black Brute?" The only way I finally got them to stop peanut butter sandwiches was by saying.. 'There is more than one reason to sell full-grown beef. yes, some raise only for filling the freezer, but there are some that want a bull to breed to make more babies but they don't want to feed them a year before they are ready to do that." This seemed to help, but they always would say when it was time for them to leave, "Please find someone that wants to make more babies" I'd remind them the meat man knew lots of farmers that may be looking for that, which helped the little ones but was still not easy on me!

@@Raven96784 Thanks for your great response! It made me smile. I'm a city person from Portland, OR & an old hippie, who, for various reasons, is 85% vegetarian. However I've been a facinated, long time watcher of a good number of ranchers & homesteaders on KZbin. I'm subscribed to channels that range from a large cattle ranch in S Dakota or a small but growing bison ranch in Oklahoma to strictly food growers in the mid-west & south & several, like Chad, who do both. What they all have in common is they're good people who are passionate about what they do (and learn) & enjoy sharing their experiences with others, like me. I have a lot of respect for farming & farmers & I've become a passionate follower. I may not really care for eating meat but like my comment said - I get it, I understand. I will miss the Beefy Boys because, like many others, I've enjoyed watching their antics since early on & because they've grown to be such beautiful, beautiful animals. But I've known all along what their purpose has been for Chad & his family & I understand & respect that . . . or I wouldn't continue to watch. But it's ok if I'll just miss them - right? Again, thanks for your further explanations & bless you - you are very kind.
@Raven967843 жыл бұрын
@@juliedonohue1654 Yes Julie, it is ok if you just miss them. Only those without a heart wouldn't. I can relate to the 'hippie' and 85% vegetarian as well, I'd probably choose to be 100% vegetarian if I wasn't such a fan of cheese steak subs, and Brisket. I wasn't fond of venison or squirrels my father would bring home for my mother to fix. I'd always say, "I'm not hungry" when I knew dinner would consist of squirrel, that has such a distinctive aroma. My father would say, this is dinner, if you choose not to partake you'll have to wait for breakfast.' Believe me, I had no problem waiting for breakfast, LOL. My mother is the first one to admit she is not creative in the kitchen when it comes to meals, and it wasn't until just the last few years that I developed a taste for venisen, presently, it is one of my favorite choices. At least that doesn't seem like a pet. Thank you for your comments Julie, and although we will miss the Beffy Boys, and Wilma too we have the joy of knowing we will be watching the new arrivals remembering how sweet they are bottle fed, and as they progress through the next stages, as well, I'm positive the new arrivals shall capture our hearts, also. I'm especially excited about the future babie pigs. Even though they are at times challenging, it is so cute to watch them play with each other, they remind me of little puppies as they play. I too am so grateful Adler Farm allows us to be part of their experience, it is such an epic Blessing!

@Betty Crunk This is very true.. and not just for cattle.. we were raising feeder pigs and they found a way to get under the ground to 4 ft fence no matter what we did they would continue to attack that same area until they got free. and this even continued after we poured a cement base with a raised area ( like a curb) in front of the bottom of the fence and those little brats actually continued burrowing a tunnel under it and crawled under the concrete base, I am positive Alcatraz would not have been able to hold them if they decided to leave LOL They are too smart for their own good!!

I would find a small area well fenced in so that Fred had no chance of getting out. Then put up several strands of your electric fence wire on the post's you use on the inside. Fix the inner fence so that Fred can't ground the electric fence to the outer fence. But keep it close enough tha Fred can't get in-between the fences. Use a very powerfull well grounded charger. Water the ground rods and the area by the fence. Fred may or may not re-evaluate electric fences.

Our bulls were required to have rings in their noses because they were show bulls. Needless to say they have only touched the fence once! Even when it is off they stay away from it. If he keeps getting out maybe you should ring his nose if you are retaining him as a breeding bull. Cows sniff fences to see if it is hot and ignore it if it is not.

Adler saying he was too busy to talk, is priceless. I used to help my father skin squirrels when we went to the farm, I watched my great aunt call one of her chickens & pick her up & break her neck or use an axe to send her to chicken heaven. People would really freak out if they saw the body flap around around for a while. I sometimes helped pluck the chicken & I'm so glad I don't have to do that. It's a lot of work to have chicken dinner. Wish I had some of your eggs. Good luck with McFred.

I used to help skin squirrels, rabbits, raccoons, muskrats, and mink with my dad. I've also seen headless chickens flop around the yard. Not something I enjoy. I remember when I was Adler's age when Grandpa would kill hogs I'd hide under the bed to try to escape the squealing of the hogs. I can still hear them more than 60 years later! I have no trouble skinning and butchering animals now but I cannot kill one. A friend gives me some deer every year. I skin and butcher them but I've never been able to kill one. Fortunately, I love beans, taters, and vegetable soups!
