I saw it as a kid and it was a very devastating ending that even advancing into adulthood cannot numb. I think this ending is so sad and heartbreaking for us because it reflects loving and developing a bond with someone who loved and cared for us, ultimately looking out for us and making us feel warm, safe, comfortable and wanted and then them leaving knowing that we will probably never see them again. That is one of the most painful things anyone could ever go through. People may forget what you say or do but they never forget how you make them feel, good or bad, therefore to not have someone who loved you and made you feel protected cannot be overstated in it’s pain. Remember to love and spend time with the people who love and care for you in your lives, all of you.

I found this after years of searching... I remember how sad I was on the ending. Devastating as you say. I now think I'd never have a child watch this. I just can't understand why you would expose them to this. On the other hand it's great to bring those memories.

I took an animation history class at college. When we learned about Australian animation, Dot and the Kangaroo was mentioned and we learned a bit about Yoram Gross. I remember one section said that his films represented some aspects of his life. Makes me wonder what he experienced to make such a depressing ending.

In my honest opinion this scene makes me sad.. but at least Dot did get to see Kangaroo again... the moment in the film series that gets me crying the most is in dot and the koala when all the animals in the bush watch their homes get destroyed to make room for the dam.. the music during that scene.. it breaks me every time. I didn't watch this moment enough when I was a kid I guess.

@@vahidhosoda6614 I never liked The Land Before Time, it was too depressing. Another sad on is All Dogs Go To Heaven. Even in An American Tale when Fieval gets separated from his family, that was a bit saddening. Don Bluth sure knew how to make the waterworks. But this scene in Dot and the Kangaroo is on a whole new level of sadness.

@@vinaymulukutla358 But regardless of how you feel about the earliest Don Bluth films, they still teach viewers something, that sometimes pain, suffering, losing loved ones, even sadness and saying goodbye once in a while is part of life.

I don't recall crying my eyes out at the end the way other people report (nor, for years, did I even remember the Bunyip song and so I almost feel left out compared to many of those who have commented) but I do recall feeling that it was unnecessarily sad and rough for an otherwise rather upbeat film. And also rather... sudden. As in, why are the parents who have been looking for their daughter so long not taking her indoors or comforting her to at least give it a kind of happy ending? And why did the kangaroo have to leave without saying goodbye properly or at least looking back from afar (so Dot could see, rather than just waving at thin air, as at 1:06)? Or are we supposed to half-wonder whether Dot dreamed it all? That humans and animals are separate and so are dreams and reality, so "Tough luck, kids"? The sad thing is, that were such a film made today, I don't think it would be so iconic, or at least not to the same scale. It's almost a wonder that it worked then, with Disney being the gold standard that every animated film was expected to make, but it's even harder for small or independent producers to get away with this sort of thing now. The roughness of the artwork and the sketchiness of the storyline are such that these are probably the only aspects that a modern reviewer would make if it got an audience at all and they would be less likely to consider that making it rough and sketchy might have been deliberate.
