Fun Fact. The British made up the name "soccer". The sport originated in British universities and was combination of both what we know as soccer and rugby. The rules were muddy so from 1848-1877 an association -- comprised of groups from South England universities such as Cambridge, Trinity, and various others (Cambridge rules, 1848) and North England universities such as Sheffield (Sheffield rules, 1858) -- came together in 1877 to formulate standardized rulings that distinguished the two sports from each other under the universally accepted rulings of the Football Association (est. Oct. 1863). The association that oversaw this, and linguists at the *University of Oxford* named the two sports "Rugger Football" & "As-Soccer" (a.k.a. Association Football -- nicknamed "socker").
