Double Din Stereo Install on 98-02 Dodge Ram

Here is a step by step double din stereo install on my 2001 Dodge Ram using the Metra installation kit. There is a fair amount of cutting required with this installation, but overall the installation with this kit is fairly simple, especially when compared to the alternatives such as fibreglass or bondo. I highly recommend the Metra kit if you're looking to upgrade to a double din unit in your second gen Ram. See links below for the kit and the stereo I purchased. I have this same bezel kit and ran into the same top side issue. (Although I do have to trim my bottom side as my head is a true double din) Thank you for showing that it is "safe" to trim the top. This will work out well in my '01 Sport. Enjoy your tunes!

Ebay and Crutchfield make a full replacement with a double DIN sized hole. Amazon sells a Dorman one same as the stock one if you want single DIN or stock look.

Great video, thank you. Looks like a nice blanket of snow in the background. I have a question regarding the tilting issue of headunit and topside interior dash clearance. Could you've used the upper two slots on the mounting bracket (@6:31 in video) to negate trimming the inside dash or in doing so would that comprise the exterior trim plates function?

Mine actually doesn't have the two tone paint, it's just chrome, but the SLT Laramie models came with the two tone paint.

@@Ethan-ur7qi went with a Kenwood Double din 10.1 inch floating screen instead. Much better build quality with a speaker knob. Also the Kenwood had a true HD Screen and more features(gauges, wireless apple carplay, insane audio adjustability)

Whats the wiring harness? Like could you show me a link cause its not the factory wiring. I have a 2001 and this is my first time putting in an after market radio. Yours just hooked right up though since you had an after market to begin with im pretty sure

So you’ll need two wiring harnesses. One comes with the Metra kit, which there’s an eBay link in the description, and the other comes with the new stereo you bought. Using the wiring colour guide that comes with the Metra harness, and the wiring colour guide that is in the stereo user manual, you’ll splice the two harnesses together. Then it’s just plug and play from there.

Yes the steering wheel controls worked. You just have to connect the wire from the steering wheels controls, which will be in there from factory, to the new wiring harness.

I am not sure of the quality of it since it is Ebay but I found one I was gonna get for my truck before just getting a single din with a pop out screen that covered where my cup holders used to be before breaking. I have a 01 ram 1500 . Just bought a pioneer double din at Walmart . Hooked all the wires up . Comes on but no sound ? Please help. Plug factory back up and sound comes back on .

I would just double and triple check that you have all the proper connections in your wiring harness. Play around with the audio settings of the new pioneer unit. If nothing helps then I would return the unit and get another one, you may just have a lemon.
