They didn’t just draw from the classic quarter muncher for this adaptation. There was a six issue, limited series by Marvel, which added more lore than the property ever needed. Then there was the animated series which added even more backstory and mythos to a one note plot. This movie borrowed liberally from the comic and the cartoon and, as a result, makes about as much sense as frogs doing fractions.

Robert Patrick’s character has the medallion which gave him power over the soul which allows him to take over peoples bodies but billy has the medallion which have him power over the body which made him immune to any damage and also protected him from being possessed and they do explain that in the movie

The thing with Hollywood video game adaptations is start picking games that are actually known for story and not gameplay.
