@GKeeper316 I’m afraid that your choice of words has managed to successfully hid a genuine point. If you had been able to translate some of your thoughts into a reasoned sentence, then perhaps you would not have managed to become the object of multiple shaking heads. Style is personal; skill is eternal. There are some items that D&W make that do not suit my aesthetic. There are many which I love. I am guessing that the product is a combination of D&W style and customer choice. In a world where making bespoke furniture profitably is incredibly difficult, then I would understand any maker making anything that makes them a profit. However, no matter how the piece pleases my very personal taste, I appreciate the supreme craftsmanship involved in every single one. I have been woodworking for 40 plus years and had a side line business making bespoke items. Now retiring, but still making slowly.

Watching this construction process, I imagined the old-timers who executed their craft in Colonial days, making sure everything was just right. When these artistic pieces that were made back then wind up on "Antique Roadshow", the Keno brothers appraisers see them for what they are, transcendent examples of the highest degree of craftsmanship. D&W are continuing in this historic tradition. Initially, I was a bit irked there wasn't any dialogue, but soon came to appreciate the process itself was doing all the talking. That said, it would have been nice to see the final staining applied and custom brass hardware fabricated and installed to complete the build from soup to nuts. What an achievement!

One thing I noticed about your construction; I rarely see you use glue. And when I do, it looks like your using hide glue. Do you rely on the fit of your joinery alone to keep everything held together?

Omg, that tiger! I cut down a silver maple (for safety) in my moms yard a few years ago. Had about a 32" trunk. After it was felled, I noticed under the bark that the cadmium was rippling. I immediately told the landscape guys to leave the bottom ten feet of the trunk. Had a sawyer come out the next day and mill it. It's had plenty of time to dry, but I don't have the workspace anymore. Meanwhile I pay $90/month for a storage locker. 😅 I could probably make a couple grand selling the slabs, but it's a tree I grew up with. It will be furniture for my children. Some day... At any rate, what do yo use for the drawer carcasses and dividers? Looks like poplar?
@billystray70074 жыл бұрын
Poplar is a traditional secondary wood for this type of furniture
@brianhackett96494 жыл бұрын
@@billystray7007 yes, that's what I use. Cheap and comes so well milled from the big box stores.
@Doucetteandwolfefurniture4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Brian! Very cool story. I am sure the log will make some nice furniture for your kids one day. On these pieces we used poplar. 1/4 sawn poplar for the drawer sides for extra stability. The 1/4 sawn is not necessary if it is not something your supplier carries.
