Pretty dangerously last minute though. Seems very silly and dangerous to be rushing things so much, on so little sleep, and then doing your unfinished car testing at what seems like almost full throttle, on the street. While I enjoy these videos and Rob seems like a genuinely nice guy, this whole recent set of videos of rushing to finish has seemed like a bad and irresponsible idea from the start.

Some friendly advice: In racing, I've never used those lock washers you're talking about, and sadly you found out why. I flat out don't use lock washers, but instead I use threadlocker and paint markers on everything. The threadlocker you only need maybe a half drop of it for each bolt (a full drop if you really want to make sure it's in there). My favorite stuff so far is OEM Honda threadlocker from Honda Motorcycle dealers. I use the high temp red stuff if I know a lot of vibration is going to be involved or if it's a critical part, and the low-strength blue for everything else. Otherwise for the most part I don't trust any lock washer. Paint markers are some GREAT stuff that I 1,000% recommend you start using for driveline and suspension parts. If you see new cars from the factory, they often have paint going from the head of the bolt onto the part it's tightening against. For race cars, this lets you know the bolt hasn't moved so you can quick glance around at stuff without having to worry about it or retorquing things all the damn time. Sorry to see that this happened, but I'm glad to see it happen now instead of on the track, and happy to see you and everybody are okay and the car didn't get hurt too bad! In racing this sort of stuff happens to everybody so welcome to the club, don't worry about it because we're all still here for you.

The proper way to do it is safety wire. That's what they use in top fuel cars and jet engines when vibration is an issue.
@MickeyC3040
@MickeyC3040 3 жыл бұрын
Any engineer that deals with fasteners HATES those split washers. They don't do anything you want them to do really. There's are tons of articles online why they don't work and the test results with a junker test which would simulate the vibration of a real racecar very well
@opossums-will-sing
@opossums-will-sing 3 жыл бұрын
Came here to say exactly this. I apprenticed with a bunch of ex-race guys, working on a bunch of vintage rally cars, and we had a paint marker color each so not only could you tell that stuff was torqued down properly, but you could tell who did it, too (super useful when there's an apprentice around). Speaking of torquing things down, I'd have been burned at the stake if I ever reassembled anything with a gun like that chap did to the attesa box; where's his torque wrench??? Haven't heard of that Honda stuff, we'd use loctite of some variety on most things.
@opossums-will-sing
@opossums-will-sing 3 жыл бұрын
@@hedhunta52 Yeah, safety wire or split pins, depending on the situation. If you get used to split pins, they don't add much time to planned disassembly and they completely stop unplanned disassembly.

Absolutely! good ole Honda bond is one of the greatest threadlockers out there. Not to mention that carbon driveshaft is rated for 3000 p/ft but the impact of a complete lock up like this could easily double that at a great enough speed.

I work in a factory. When we have bolts/screws we don't want to back out we use nord lock washers. They work extremely well but are ONE TIME USE. Once you tighten them. The only way to loosen them is to rip the teeth off the washer which destroys them. I strongly encourage you to use these. We use these on things that take big impact loads or high vibration stuff in the plant.

Registered PE mechanical engineer here. Check out Nordlock lock washers. It's a two-piece hardened washer that uses cam ramps to prevent loosening. They're used on roller coasters and other high vibration environments. Split lock washers and star lock washers do very very little. Nordlock is different. No affiliation but I thought you should know about them given this failure.
