Do you really get more performance from your RX 5700XT equipped eGPU in macOS Catalina by simply plugging in a second monitor? Let's find out!
I test the eGPU with the 2013 Mac Pro 6,1 Trashcan, a 2019 15" MacBook Pro, and a 2018 13" MacBook Pro - using Geekbench 5 and some real-world Final Cut Pro X tests.
Fascinating results!

I had a charging issue with my 2015 MacBook pro which was present for at least 5 years and only now it has been fixed. It had something to do with boosting the charging for iPhone's above the 1amp and it would just drop but you could disable this in terminal "sudo killall -STOP -c usbd".

This could be that thunderbolt card(interface) might do some sort of compression or modification in order and undo once on the dock to transfer at the promised speeds and undo once on the dock side, and once the processing job is done it might does the same job leading to carry the extra load on the cpu and gpu internally (as seen in many videos here). So if you configure the software to use the external gpu to do most hard processing and instead of bring it back to your main computer it renders it at docking station and display its native result in what you might call local resources. I’m no computer geek at all but that’s probably my only logical conclusion I can come with. Peace out.

Great video- I’m testing a 2013 Mac Pro, 12 core with D700s. I already have a core x and 5700xt for another system, do you think it’s worth it to add it for fcpx? Will it use all 3 gpu effectively or I shouldn’t bother?
@ConstantGeekery
@ConstantGeekery 4 жыл бұрын
In my experience it will only use one of the internal cards, but depending on the type of footage you’re working with, the 5700XT can speed things up both in render and timeline performance. Doesn’t fit every workflow, but can’t hurt to try.
@ClassicalTechnology
@ClassicalTechnology 4 жыл бұрын
Constant Geekery what footage do you think you could help? Red raw and canon R5 possibly?
@ConstantGeekery
@ConstantGeekery 4 жыл бұрын
Classical Technology I haven’t used either of those. I work in 4K with Blackmagic Raw (converted to ProRes) or ProRes 422 at 600Mbps with my BMPCC 4K, and H.264 10-bit or 8-bit from my Panasonic G9. FCPX works best with ProRes. The eGPU speeds most things up, but I found it doesn’t make much difference background rendering H.264. It does make a big difference to timeline performance with 4K H.264. Bear in mind that my Mac Pro has the D300s. Overall, the eGPU speeds things up, but it’s not always fully utilised. It does improve timeline performance and system stability. Due to the Thunderbolt 2 bandwidth, the performance is not night and day. If you already have the kit, it’s worth giving it a try for your workload, but I wouldn’t recommend going and spending loads of money on it if you already have the D700s.

I have a silly question.. is there a performance loss with no monitor or dummy adp. attached in other apps that let you select the egpu directly like davinci and 3d rendering apps? - There seems to be a confusion around "IF" you need to plug anything at all in. other than select get info and set prefer egpu..
@ConstantGeekery
@ConstantGeekery 4 жыл бұрын
In my experience it makes a difference system-wide, but I haven’t retested with the latest OS update. Certainly, eGPU works best when you work on a display attached directly to it (regardless of the Prefer eGPU setting). For the sake of $15 for a dummy plug, I keep that in all the time.

Update: After I set my dummy display port resolutions at 4k, the score jumped to 66,000. Unfortunately my monitor is still 1080p so "mirror display trick" won't work. In this case, am I safe to assume that if I invest in a 4k monitor, I will see better performance coming from the egpu?

Could this eGPU solution improve OBS Streaming App running a MBP ?
@ConstantGeekery
@ConstantGeekery 3 жыл бұрын
As far as I’m aware, the only hardware encoder supported by both macOS and OBS is Intel Quick Sync, so I don’t think GPU is used at all. Quick Sync is part of the CPU. (And a note for anyone on 2013 Mac Pro: these Xeons don’t have Quick Sync).

@ConstantGeekery
@ConstantGeekery 3 жыл бұрын
If the eGPU is working, you will see an icon on the top right area of the menu bar. If you are using a 2013 Mac Pro (or any Mac with Thunderbolt 2), you need to install purge-wrangler first. If it is a 2013 Mac Pro, use the bottom left Thunderbolt 2 port. You need to be running Catalina to use a 5700XT, as the drivers don’t exist in earlier versions of macOS. Without more information about your equipment it’s difficult to help more.

Side question - On the MacPro, can you have two monitors attached to the eGPU and still use the HDMI port - so you can use three monitors? The multiple Thunderbolt bus thingthanks is a pain with the equipment I have, so it would be useful to only use one thunderbolt port for two monitors thanks

You mean the HDMI port on the Mac Pro? Yes, you can do that. Only downside to the onboard HDMI is it can only do 4K at 30Hz, but if you’re running 1080p or 1440p, that should work fine. I’ve had no issues using the DisplayPort at the same time as eGPU also.

Fascinating! MBP15 faster over TB2 compared to MBP13 over TB3, but FCPX faster on MBP13. Any reason why?
@ConstantGeekery
@ConstantGeekery 4 жыл бұрын
I guess you mean Mac Pro and TB2, not MBP15... but yes, benchmarking the card doesn't require massive data throughput, whereas rendering on FCPX does, so the MacBooks with Thunderbolt 3 have an advantage in video editing. Also, the MacBooks have the T2 chip onboard which is used to accelerate encoding and decoding of certain video codecs (like H.264), which is why they are faster to background render the H.264 footage. Hope that all makes sense.

There are other videos on my channel showing the setup - I don’t have any recommendations per se, I can only relate my experience with the equipment I have. (Razer Core X with RX5700XT and Apple TB3 to TB2 adapter) According to Solidworks’ support page, it only runs on Windows and they don’t officially support running it under Bootcamp. Likewise, it specifically needs nVidia cards, as you say, which are not supported on the Mac Pro.

Jörg Henninges Interesting. Looks like you are fairly consistently seeing around 40k in Metal - the 50k score is OpenCL, which is always a little different. In this case, an external display. Accelerating the internal display with eGPU is certainly possible on Thunderbolt 3 equipped machines, but this does limit performance as you are sending data to the eGPU and then back to the laptop through the Thunderbolt cable.
