With the fish higher in the water at this time of year you need to keep your flies in the taking zone for as long as possible. Palmered wets work well but another way of slowing the decent down is by double hackling your wet flies. This little comp legal pattern works well when there are black flies coming off.

Using double or even triple hackle gives buoyancy, movement and contrast in colours and texture. Partridge, teal, mallard, guinea fowl, jay, even grizzle hackle. Any help add that visual variation. A extra couple turns of say partridge often make a world of difference to most hackled patterns. From a basic pennell, Zulu, Kate mc, or try a contrasting white or even a bright colour at the head of behind that front hackle. On that difficult day when all else is failing give them a go. Be it subtle as with the Grunter, or a in your face bright fluorescent green at the head of a Zulu. Give one a go.

Not really, I have a load of scissors that are scattered over my bench. I just use what comes to hand. 👍

@@lindsayiflyfish hah! a man after my own heart! I think I have 6 pairs of various lengths and manufacturers. Usually I'll pick one I feel like using that day, or week and use it for most everything. The last couple weeks flavor has been just a cheap German made iris scissors I got off Amazon. Cheers!
