Hi all welcome back to another video Dereck Reacts back at it again! This time around we take a look at another PATREON request with a double react to Claude Dubois and Celine Dion and the song "Le Blues du Businessman." A very deep lyrical song about truth in the corporate world and that balance of work and life that doesn't exist. A well written song with lots of dramatic moments. Do they sell it? See who does it better!

It’s cool how we agree on this song and Dereck’s reactions video because I said the same as you almost an hour ago. :) Yes, the strong points and power of the song are in its lyrics. I like too that Dereck told what he thinks of the song in all honesty. If things go as I expected, you will see more Quebec artists soon since Dereck has agreed to react on one of my requests. I love this song. Yes its repetitive, but its the lyrics get me. Stuck in a job, but you still have dreams of doing something else. The last line always hits me, applies to me, "to be able to say why i exist" I still haven't been able to answer that question. 25 years later.
@oyvey764

I so agree .... the repetitiveness of the song captures the fact that the character is trapped in life he does not want day after day... but the lyrics exposes the many missed dreams. Dubois' version is a classic on it's own and part of the sound track.... Céline made it her own .... I love both versions for different reasons.

Yes. Dereck is a little unfair with Dubois. His song was part of the Starmania show. So he had to make it repetitive to increase the melancholy of his character.

I am not surprised that the song doesn’t appeal to you much. The power of this song is in the lyrics, that’s where it finds its popularity. I would have wished that you listened to Claude Dubois singing live too because like Céline, he has more leeway in his interpretation of the song live. There is a video of Claude Dubois singing live on KZbin for those who want to hear how he sounds live. kzbin.info/www/bejne/p6uXpIR-a6xprtk Thanks Dereck for your honesty, I appreciate it. :)

Totally fair, Dereck. This song is more of an "expose" song inside Starmania. It is presenting Zero Janvier to us (and also bringing one of the themes: that if we are not true to ourselves and our desires, we can never be fully happy and our frustrations and disatisfaction with ourselves makes us angry, bitter and vindictive). Though it has been extremely popular in France (covered by many artists), the fact that you don't understand the lyrics is probably preventing you from appreciating the song fully. The lyrics are absolutely central to the song (and you appreciated that). This is probably a case where listening and understanding the words would really make a difference, I think. But I completely understand your reaction. From a purely musical point of view, it feels "repetitive" (it is; it's like a litany, a lamentation from the character). I wish you could see the full show. The song would make more sense in that context, as part of the storytelling. I hope you will listen to other Starmania songs. (BTW I don't think that DBalavoine ever sang this song). I'm sure you'll get suggestions. It's a cult show with many amazing songs. I hope you will enjoy those more. :-)

Hello Dereck, thanks for your honesty, when it comes to musical taste, to each his own. The repetitiveness is an obvious way to emphasize the freedom needed by the singer trapped into a businessman costume. He tries to bargain with himself during the first part but when the dam explodes, the urge for expression bursts out and can't be stopped but by exhaustion. Such a powerful song with so powerful lyrics.

Starmania is a phenomenon ! No other musical comedy has produced so many hits. There's something that always shocks me, it’s that everybody believes that Daniel Balavoine has sung "le blues du businessman". It wasn't his role in the show ! He played Johnny Rockfort who was a young rebel, certainly not a businessman ! He sang "Quand on arrive en ville" and "SOS d'un terrien en détresse", but as far as I know, Claude Dubois is the only one who was the businessman (Zéro Janvier), in the initial version.

Hi Dereck ! 🙂 As you've realized by the end of your reaction, this is indeed from Starmania. It explains why the orchestration is so dramatic, it is an "opera rock" so it's bound to be theatrical. 🙂 As far as the two versions go, I think you prefered the Celine one because she broke the repetitiveness of the second part by going completely a-wire with Michel Berger's rythmic and melody. (which is exactly the reason why I personnaly don't like it) It is not the only song in Starmania that Berger has written with that type of structure, "Monopolis" by France Gall is built just the same. (hope you'll react to it) They are absolutely beautiful, but a hassle to sing ! 😅

Ok, I can understand that this song is not your cup of coffee, Most americans have a kind of structure in their minds for songs, it's hard for them to adjust their taste to something different. I think that this is a meaningfull song, deep and emotional, and Celine takes it to another level, making her the best singer of the last era

I guess that's where, as a french, I don't agree with you. The song's strength is the lyrics. It's a cult song. It's a deep song. It's a song, when I hear it in french, it makes me cry because it makes me question my life, my decisions, it makes me wonder "what if". The music is secondary to me. It's good. It's catchy for me. But the lyrics... oh my god, the lyrics. A song ending by "I wanted to be an artist, to be able to say why I exist". Why we exist. Why we are here on Earth. That's deep. It never gets old because it's a question that humans will ever ask themselves. And I think the music compliments the lyrics, it doesn't get the better of it. It lets the lyrics shine.

I understand and didn't criticize your liking of Celine's version, but for someone that is used to Dubois' one, the pauses Celine makes in middle of sentences, they feel so odd and disturbing... Almost like she doesn't want people to sing along with her, like she's denying them the right to do it. At least, it was the way I perceived it, as I was so frustrated each time she broke the rhythm.

There is something called a posing for a dramatic effect… You can just learn what she’s doing in her version and sing along with that a rhythm. You don’t have to take it personally. Lol. If it was an aesthetic problem, I can understand you’re not liking her version, but to make it all personal and say that it’s like she doesn’t want you to sing along it’s just silly…

I personally like "Partout je te vois" by Celine but you may think it interesting to listen to "On traverse un miroir"

Although this song played a lot on the radio, it's not a pop song. If musicals aren't your thing, we should stop suggesting them to you or at least warn you on what you're getting into. That being said, your reaction to this song is quite accurate in the context of a pop music universe.

I think that the next two performances to react to from this same concert are: "Priere Paienne" (fast, super fun song and she sings it flawlessly, incredible stamina, lots of belts, riffs and runs) and other one is "Calling You" and it's incredibly emotional and spiritual and she showcases everything a vocalist can do.

He’s now in his 70s (77) and still sounds great when singing this song. Can’t believe the talent to be able to do that at his age and health issues…

Hello Dereck! I agree with you, Celine Dion is certainly the greatest vocal performer in the world (with Lara Fabian) but she is often too perfect and makes you forget the quality of the song she sings because we focus especially on her great voice. This is why I prefer Mylène Farmer because she makes you feel more emotion and sensitivity with her very special crystalline voice but she does not try to pose at 100% of the power. Between a huge voice and a total artist I chose the second option ...
