The 613 is a relatively short jacket because its length is better for the siiting position on a motorcycle. Biker jackets similarly have extra-long sleeves to accomodate the arms-forward position while riding. The hardware and 'dingle-dangles' on the 613 and other assymmetrical design all have a functional purpose relative to motorcycling. The overlapped lapels, belted waist and sleeve zippers keep the cold wind out; the snaps keep the lapels and collar corners from flapping around in the wind; and exterior pocket zips keep you from losing pocket contents on the road. Chains on zipper pulls are easier to grab and manipulate with gloved fingers. Remember that you won't NEED all these functional features in a motorcycle jacket that's strictly for off-bike wear--e.g.,the waistbelt--but if you like the way they look and they aren't a pain in the neck to cope with every time you put the jacket on and take it off there's no particular reason to avoid them. If you don't like a waist belt/loops or epaulets and are buying a new jacket I think it's generally better to buy a jacket design that simply omits them rather than to buy a jacket with them and then attempt to cut/hack them off later at home. If you do try your own leather jacket surgery, the results are often not very aesthetically pleasing plus, at least to me personally, it seems a pitiable waste of good leather and workmanship. Also, any thread/stitching that you remove from the jacket to get, say, belt loops off of it may weaken the jacket structurally over time as well. Any Schott jacket is going to have excellent leather. Their steerhide and horsehide are sourced from the Horween tannery in Chicago, as is true as well with their matching steerhide jeans. Besides Schott, I also like Vanson leather jackets and their older-type competition weight steerhide so these days I tend to buy used Vanson garments that are in good shape. I think we are now long since past the point where you should feel you HAVE to ride a motorcycle to own/wear a leather motorcycle jacket, so I urge other guys who like the slick look of leather to go ahead and get one or several leather jackets for their everyday casual wear. Most people know someone who has a leather biker jacket who ISN'T a hoodlum or biker gang member (assumed drinker, smoker, brawler) and so the jacket's look isn't so unfavorably intimidating now as it was in the past. The superficially 'intimidating' aspect could even work to your advantage at those times when you don't mind looking a little 'tougher' than you actually are-say, while walking along the street at night. Some people will act a bit deferentially toward you for wearing a leather biker jacket, but I can say from past experience that kind of attention does wear thin after a while. 'Superficial celebrity for a moment' might describe the phenomenon. Broken-in leather is a very windproof, comfortable and even 'soothing' material, but it is not particularly warm in cold weather, depending on the jacket's lining and whether or not you layer a sweatshirt or sweater underneath. I've sometimes bought the same leather jacket in two sizes--one for its 'as is' fit and the next larger size for layering.That has worked out pretty well for me. If there's a jacket style/model you greatly like you might even buy it in three sizes if your budget allowed for that. There, the object would be to accommodate some changes in weight as well as the need for layering in colder weather. Avoid lambskin/sheepskin in garments worn for biking--it's too thin and structurally weak. Leather meant for protection during biking should be thick, tough-to-tear stuff. Lamb/sheep is OK for fashion leather wear but is still not as durable as good cowhide/steerhide or heavier horsehide. A superior quality leather garment will last you a lifetime if maintained along the way and your greatest challenge in owning it will probably be eventual sizing issues arising due to weight change. Some manufacturers like Schott or Vanson will replace broken zippers/hardware or even re-dye or repair their own garments for a fee too if you can't find a leather tailor/repair shop local to you. Zipper failures are fairly common and a main zipper replacement at present might typically cost ~$100. Main zippers tend to fail due to lots of use and zipping a garment around your waist that's too tight; the zipper ends at the bottom tend to pull away from their stitching. Zipper pulls (especially the little chains) break once in a while too. You would think there SHOULD be replacement zipper pulls that just 'snap on' where the old one was, but that's not typically so; instead, most zippers have to be removed and replaced along their entire lengths which requires opening up/restitching of seams, etc. Austin's two Schott jackets look very flattering on him not only because they're really well-made but also because he has a slim build. It's sad but true that leather jackets look the best on thinner people who don't have bulging tummies. I struggled with this issue for quite a few years myself, and so in the past I went from a size 42 to size 44 to size 46 to size 48 leather jacket in an unhappy 'progression.' At present I have better control of my diet and weight and am back to 42/44. I suppose one happy solution is to kill two birds with one stone by taking your walks for exercise while wearing your favorite leather jacket. 🙂 These days a leather jacket-motorcycle or otherwise-is often also a substantial INVESTMENT. New Schott jackets are currently running near/at/above $1,000 each, and of course there are even higher-end leather jackets that cost in the multi-thousand dollar range, especially if you venture into custom sizing and the highest quality horsehide. For those who have never owned a leather jacket before and wish to invest in one-say, a Schott Perfecto or Cafe racer-remember too that an expensive leather motorcycle jacket is also a relatively tempting target for theft. Most of us wouldn't expect our more ordinary and inexpensive jackets and coats to be objects of theft, but with a first/expensive leather jacket I would be careful about taking it off and leaving it out of your sight at work (unless you really know all your coworkers well and could vouch for their honesty), or, say, in a buffet-type restaurant where you leave your table/booth to fetch food, or while at some location where coats are all hung up in an entryway area or other location that's accessible to anyone while you're occupied elsewhere in the building. I've lost one leather bomber jacket that way and it only cost around $100 back in the day. So when wearing your prized new Schott or other leather jacket 'out and about' either keep it on or at least put it somewhere nearby where you can also keep an eye on it while you eat, attend a meeting, or do whatever else. Locking it in your car trunk is an inconvenient alternative that might also work.

Brilliant writeup. Regarding leather jackets being not warm enough in cold weather it depends on the inner lining. I own a Schott 626 and it's a jacket supposed to be worn in "warmer" climates due to the thin cotton flannel lining, meaning I can wear it thinly layered in autumn and with just a shirt in spring and early to the end of summer, so it's a very versatile jacket to wear. Leather jackets with quilted lining will give you more warmth and are labelled as "winter" jackets but once it gets really cold these jackets also become obsolete due to just not giving enough warmth in winter and I prefer wearing a parka or pea coat. I would also hesitate wearing them in warmer climates/seasons as it can build up sweat very fast but I think it also depends how much your body perceives coldness and hotness. I think buying moto jackets that are fitted is the way to go and if you need more warmth, sizing up may result in an awkward fit, but it depends from person to person.

Great video. I'm team Cafe Racer all the way for the exact reasons you've stated. I think the Double Rider looks terrible on a lot of people, but with that said, people shouldn't care about what others think and they should wear what they want. If you are a dorky looking guy, but wearing the Double Rider makes you feel great, more power to you. A lot of people probably think the Cafe Racer is boring and the Double Rider more visually interesting, so each to their own.

The double rider is a very common played out style to give the stereotypical "bad boy/girl" look. This can work for or against someone in my opinion! but with the cafe racer being more neutral and less polarizing it goes to show that there is a jacket for anybody!
@TexasSwamp

I love the double rider but I feel like it’s a young man’s jacket. If you’re 35 and over something minimalist like the cafe racer looks a lot better on most men. The one thing I can’t get past with the cafe racer is the collar. What I wish is that Schott offered the 530 (cafe racer) but with a normal spread collar.
@voltlifeproofgrooming5208

The double rider definitely gives the classic "rebel without a cause" feel to it. That being said the tradeoff is how people immediately assume you behave. The Cafe Racer is a much cleaner look without all the zippers and pockets and snaps. The collar on the racer actually helps when you're riding a motorcycle by keeping wind from entering the jacket, but as a fashion piece, it is a bit strange! Thanks for watching and commenting my friend!

I have both. You can't go wrong with either and you can't go wrong with Schott. The double rider works for a classic, casual and somewhat rugged look. The cafe racer works if you want a sleeker and more streamlined look. It's okay to rotate frequently between the two depending on the occasion. Either way, you get to tell people that you have a life outside a black monochrome suit.

Very true, I think some people get themselves into a box and think they can only choose one and have to "dedicate" to that jacket to fully break it in and make it theirs forever. Nothing wrong with having multiple jackets for multiple occasions or just whatever you feel for that day. They do take forever to brak in though but they feel awesome when they do B)! A Cafe Racer on skinny guys makes them look even skinnier (I learned this the hard way). The Double Rider can be zipped about 2" on the bottom and give the illusion of bigger shoulders. A Double Rider in a distressed brown without the extra zippers looks especially good.

Hey, that biker jacket actually fits you well. I'm not a fan of the Perfecto, just because they're more like a functional jacket instead of a fashion jacket and just don't look sleek. But that one looks good on you. I actually thought you were wearing the Celine biker jacket when I clicked on the video! That's my personal favorite leather jacket.

I'll have to look into that one! And I agree, ultimately the perfecto doesn't look quite as sleek, especially when the zipper is opened compared to the cafe racer. FOr some reason, espeically when I ride, the cafe racer is more comfortable but that just could be the combination of the fit and my body style. Overall, it's whatever you think works best for you!

Greetings mate. I now have a racer and a double rider (I also have kind of a delivery and a bomber) and i do indeed notice the things you say. The double riders are more noticed and intimidating than a racer. No matter how hard and how bad guy i wanna look in a racer, it's not as recognizable as a DR. That said, sometimes people notice more the jacket than the guy itself, so i guess kind of a downside for the Perfecto. Another one is those are not as good for a lot of wind hitting you in the neck and extreme cold for the gap that is formed around the collar bones. On the other side, racers don't have that so point up for them. However, a DR i find great for riding in the rain or overall a particularly functional motorcycling jacket. That being said, a proper racer will do the job just as fine, but if it's fitted, will have less space than a Perfecto. My recommendation: Cafectos are pretty cool. Have the functionality, as zipper and pocket space of a Perfecto while having a snap down cafe collar, best of both worlds. Take care lml

Awesome, but after having made myself a calfskin and goatskin leather jacket, I will never buy cowhide again. I know it's supposed to be a tough garment, but I like stuff that drapes well. Edit: please mention that these jackets have to cover the belt line of your pants and go no further. Otherwise the waist bellows out like an a1 or g2.
@voltlifeproofgrooming5208
@voltlifeproofgrooming5208 2 жыл бұрын
Those are good points. many people like the steerhide, horsehide, and cowhide because of the toughness and longevity of it, but they definitely aren't the most comfortable to wear right off the rack for sure. I think I mentioned somewhere that these jackets have to b somewhat short but generally the shortness is up to the wearer and what they're comfortable with. For riding though, that's a whole different story! They definitely shouldn't be longer than your beltline!

@@voltlifeproofgrooming5208 agreed, I'd with you'd do a comparison of a steer hide jacket to a lambskin jacket so people get a better idea of the fall. @voltlifeproofgrooming5208 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks man! The double rider definitely gives off the "aggressive" vibe with it (probably why people associate it with certain types of attitudes) and the collar on the Cafe takes a bit of getting used to. It certainly is more utilitarian if you happen to ride a motorcycle (the collar keeps wind from getting in and under your helmet which makes noise) but personally I prefer the cafe for a few reasons: 1) The fit of the cafe is just better on my frame, which may be a sizing issue on my double rider 2) The cafe is more neutral in terms of trends and other pieces you wear. Unlike the double rider, the cafe doesn't go in and out of style as much. Your best bet is to try them both and see which one makes you feel badass!

A shorter body actually has a functional purpose considering these aren't just fashion jackets, they're motorcycle jackets! When you are sitting on a motorcycle, having a shorter body of the jacket keeps the material from bunching up against your legs and getting uncomfortable. That being said, Schott also has lots of fashion jacket options which do have longer bodies like the 613S. Thanks for watching!
@JonathanGrandt

Schott’s size recommendations on their website is a bit odd to me. I have a 44 chest and they recommend a size 44 in the 118. It’s so big 😂 it’s 50inches around. Woof. And you gotta be some sorta giant with freakishly king arms to wear that thing. I sized down to size 42, and while it’s still on the big side it works well enough. The sleeves are still long and I’ll have to pay Schott some $80 to shorten them. I suppose if I worked hard and lot some weight I could get a size 40 and it might be closer in the arms to fit right. I know motorcycle jackets intentionally have long sleeves but these seem to be designed for someone in peak physical condition.
@voltlifeproofgrooming5208
@voltlifeproofgrooming5208 Жыл бұрын
Schott jackets in my opinion definitely do have a strange sizing condition that changes with each and every model. For example, my 613 is a 36 and fits well enough, as a 34 definitely would NOT fit when I tried one on. That being said, my 641 is a 34 and fits almost perfectly. Long sleeves on a motorcycle jacket is definitely a benefit if you ride, if not then it may not be for you, and sometimes I noticed the leather can bunch around the top (tricep area) of the arms because they are designed for your arms to be extended on the bike, so resting your arms at your side can cause that excess material to bunch up a bit. all in all I just consider it part of the character of the jacket lol! you may want to look into a version of the 618 in the size they recommend because it's supposed to be a slimmer fit overall so it won't feel so large, however you'll have to deal with the steerhide instead of the natural finished cowhide so it will take more breaking in. Thanks for watching!

Wait what size was you’re chest here and what size was the size of the double rider jacket here

I have the 641 model (cafe racer type) If you ride a bike, this is NOT a jacket for you. It will ride up in the back as soon as you lift your arms. You do not want that. This is more of a fashion jacket. It is not built for motorcycle posture. I found out the hard way originally thinking that it was :) Now, I just use it as a fashion jacket. It does bunch up in the back around the neck area when I lift my arms up. I don't know how could that be eliminated since it sits nicely on my body. Chest fits, shoulders fit... just the back of the neck rides up. I actually found this video looking for some potential solutions to that problem. Front is fine, since I had Schott install dual zipper, so front is not bunching up when I sit down.

Hi Max, I guess we all have different experiences with these jackets! It's interesting, personally I prefer my 641 when I'm on my bike. For me, the fit is spot on enough that I can lift my arms more easily than with my perfecto (I have mini ape-hangers on my bike) and I don't typically feel like it lifts the back much at all. The perfecto is just a bit too short in length for me, but it just goes to show that the big thing about leather jackets is finding one that works for you! Leather is a difficult material to work with, but it will be worth it to find the one that ticks all the boxes. Thanks for watching,

@@voltlifeproofgrooming5208 Yeah, I guess you are right. I just think jackets such that and when I hear "motorcycle jacket" is little false. For example, Vanson makes custom motorcycle jackets. They have room in elbows so you can bend them when arms are in front of you, without constricting the fit in the back. I do not have experience with Perfecto model, so I can't speak for it. I also have bars that are little higher (11 inches) than usual. Now, this jacket is "OK" for me when riding. I can pull it off, especially with dual zipper. No issues there. It just doesn't fit me "perfect" in certain positions. The Perfecto would be... uhh perfecto length for the bike that would not bunch up when sitting. Most true motorcycle jackets are shorter on the front and longer on the back. The same goes for vests. Otherwise, there is nowhere for that extra thick leather to go but up and into your chin lol. As expensive lesson as all this was for me, I came out from this experience with a quality fashion jacket that I will start wearing more often. Next year, I will probably end up getting custom fit Vanson made. They account for all the crucial measurements when making their jackets. It kind of sucks that Schott does not make custom fit jackets anymore. I really love the brand and would go with them if they still have those services. Great video by the way. One of the best ones I saw so far.

Which one is warmer?
@voltlifeproofgrooming5208
@voltlifeproofgrooming5208 Жыл бұрын
For me, the 613 perfecto is warmer simply because it has the 5.5 oz quilted nylon lining. If the cafe racer had the same lining it would likely be just as warm.

Prefer racers and bombers. Doubles are so flashy they seem common. Also dislike the belt around the waist

I will admit, the belt does bother me whenever I wear my double rider. Always have to keep it buckled too if I'm going to be on the bike otherwise I risk scratching up my tank. definitely a look, but probably not one for me personally. Thanks for watching!

Strange thing is these days most shops seem to only sell Cafe Rider jackets for Men but women are sold both Double Rider and Cafe Rider. It feels patronizing that us guys are only relegated to more minimal, "modern" designs, as if the shops themselves are made for conservative women looking for means to "tame" their significant other into some rigid, passionless masculinity.

Is the cafe racer lighter in weight ?
@voltlifeproofgrooming5208
@voltlifeproofgrooming5208 Жыл бұрын
It's definitely feels lighter without the zip-out fur liner inside of it, because then it's only lined with polyester and not the quilted nylon that the 613 double rider is lined with.

Love the style, but the prices are absurd, costing double, triple the price of actual motorcycle AAA rated jackets, honestly youre paying like close to 70% of the price just for the brand name.

Bruh... take this from someone who has been judge his entire life, without the necessity of a jacket, YOU specifically are never gona get judged because of that jacket. Maybe you'll get a "oh you look like James Dean" sometimes, but you will never intimidate anyone, and if you actually ever have, then you must live in about the safest neighborhood in the country. Don't take this as bashing, but definitely be thankful that you have never experienced real profiling, because it makes for a miserable life, everything from losing job opportunities, to getting accused of things you don't even dare to do, just because of your looks alone. It's funny when you are young, but it gets old very fast. Good review tho.

To get out of the jacket, pull your arms back and let the jacket slide down.* The epaulet is for your toque. The gloves go in your back pocket. Depends on whether the piece is meant to protect or not I suppose. I know a lot of leather jackets out of lamb but they tend to just be lightweight fashion jackets for warmer weather or people who like to layer for the sake of fashion. Definitely not useful or confidence inspiring on the bike though! I believe Schott's steerhide isn't technically "steerhide" but instead is cowhide that's been finished with a top coating and waxes that make it stiffer and more water resistant than their 1-series cowhides.

@voltlifeproofgrooming5208
@voltlifeproofgrooming5208 Жыл бұрын
If I remember correctly, the only difference in the slim is that the body is longer and it lacks the underarm "footballs" that Schott uses to increase mobility. A little breaking in shouldn't make it a big deal though, and to be honest, the footballs in my 641 bother me and always ride my sleeves up anyways. I'd still go for the 46 first if you have the chance of trying them on! Thanks for watching!
