It was a film directed to the non-Sonic fans as an introduction to Sonic and Robotnik, as well as starting the family relationship of Tom, Maddie and Sonic. The second and third films aren't afraid of utilizing the lore of the games anymore because of the first film establishing Sonic's world. So basically, each one gets better.
