Is criticism of Qatar's World Cup unfair? In the run up to the tournament, many Western politicians and jounralists criticised Qatar. Qatar's foreign minister fired back, saying that he is "annoyed by the double standards." That feeling of being treated unfairly resonates with many Qataris.

I think the criticism is hypocritical because western countries do so many things with Qatar from investing, construction, trade, energy supply and more they never ask about human rights and immigrants worker safety issue but now became important, why?. Human rights, worker safety etc always be important and must always questioned, not only in sport.

Again your comment does not show the hypocrisy of the west. In fact your comment makes them look good still and paint Qatar as the bad one To remind you the west in the only country responsible for world chaos. They’ve fabricated evidence of WMD and destroyed Iraq, massacred children and women their. And yet they want to lecture Qatar with immigrant workers? They’ve used nuclear weapon against women and children when Japan was retreating on all fronts. Do I listen to any lecturing from such evil? No I’m not. So next time you want to show the hypocrisy of the west please to highlight their evil instead of making the west look like still the good guys

What I want to say is do more digging to know the whole truth. I gurantee it will be a shock. Qatar is a religious country, Western countries are not anymore. The three religions Islam ,Christianity, Judaism are saying in their books that homosexuality is forbidden. So basically what I want to say it is not a human right until recently... when some countries became more free and unreligious. Do not disrespect the country and their believe in their religion. Everybody is free to do what they want of course. If you do not like the rules do not go, if you think it is unfair it is your opinion. No need for disrespecting anybody. Yes, he made the mistake of revealing what he personally believes in. The thing about "choosing who you want to be" is probably referring to having the choice to transition if that's what you want, even though Gender Dysphoria (GD) isn't a choice (I won't debate about wether GD is a Psychiatric Condition that should be normalized or not), it's something that you're born with (or in this case might develop during your life). The Reporter made the error of saying that people should be able to choose who they want to be, probably hoping that the guy would (fall into the trap and) understand it in a broader sense: people absolutely should be able to choose who they want to become in life, what kind of person (values), which religion, what kind of job they want, etc.. But... the guy interviewed was obviously going to take it the way he did since the topic was already on LG-BT and this creates such a strong emotional response from people living there - they flat out deny the existence of same sex orientation, he even said that L-G-B-T doesn't exist, is a western invention/fabrication, OR, as I've also personally heard from people coming from this region, they believe that anything else than heterosexuality is a brain defect or disease! I mean... I had a high school teacher who kept saying that regularly... The guy was fired, seeing as we're in Canada. The Reporter started feeling intimidated and scared (maybe a bit too easily since there wasn't a crowd at first) and HE DID LET IT SHOW & LOST HIS COMPOSURE. Now, THE ABSOLUTE WORSE MISTAKE HE COULD HAVE DONE AT THIS POINT IS PRECISELY ANSWERING "Yes, of course!", AS HE WOULD HAVE GOTTEN BEATEN FOR SURE BY THE ANGRY MOB!

The criticism about Qatar is absolutely unfair, data is wrong and you know why? 1.DW never spoke about US war crimes in the middle east. 2.DW is funded largely funded by USA, Never spoke about deaths occurred during COVID-19🦠😷 3.DW never criticized Israeli government for the genocide and murder of Palestinian children.. including journalists like Shireen

Few question, I totally respect people who stands for human rights, but unfortunately politicians and media channels are just politicizing human rights, which leading to having a double standards in applying human rights and that is eventually will lead to further lose of believe in human rights and the international bodies advocating and protecting human rights. Respecting human culture and beliefs, simply because we are different, and that what enriches us as human.

How is there a double standard. Compared to what’s happening in Qatar the rest of the west and much of Asia is way better so nope no doubt standards the rest of the world says there should be the slightest respect for human rights and Qatar isn’t even doing that.

The bloods of millions of people are on ur hand till today.....nevertheless you shouldn't treat all the wolrd as your students, and you show them how they should act as per you.... Frist human rights is to respect people's opinions and their right to refuse or accept whatever they want... quit acting like an innocent we all hve read the history not far away and we all know what you did

Germany and the west simple fail to understand that tolerence means accepting people the way they are. These are qataris and that is their culture (period). It is the west arrogance to expect people change their beliefs and culture on their own land for them.

If you believe in the freedom of individuals, why is prostitution illegal, full nudity, polygamy, drug abuse, and brother-sister marriage? Every culture has freedom within a certain scope and has limits that are forbidden to be crossed. Therefore, it is hypocritical for you to lecture us about freedom because there is no society that gives absolute personal freedom. The whole thing is that you want the whole world to adopt the same scope of your freedom with the same borders because you always think that you are the only one with the right view that should be imposed on the rest of the world

Well the LGBTQ community were able to attend the world cup in qatar like everyone else. Its just if u want to do what u do. Dont do it in public. Cause those people that ur visiting as a guest are not used to that. They have families and childrens that u can effect with what u do. Like if u had a guest in house and u invite him to dinner the he takes off his pants infront of ur wife or children. U will say wtf!! And then he tells u that i only eat while nude and U have to accept it. How would u feel?

There are men football, women football, if you really love lgbtq why don't Europe start LGBTQ football so each can go watch what he likes and finish this story, or Europe can make world cup just for them and apply the rules they like, but forcing your ideas on others that's will never work even if their ideas are correct. Respect people and stay happy :)

Yeah forcing your ideals like forcing soccer players to remove their ideals. Funny your type seems to talk about double standards when you guys say you should respect what we believe and strip others of what they believe. Also the fact that Qatar is just evil and hopefully they won’t be spared when the us lites you guys up.

Enough Doble standard. If a football player support Palestinian he will be bunshed and will get a fine because the excuse was that fifia didn't mix football with politics but out of the Sudan when the Ukrainin Russian War started, player are forced to support Ukraina, and fifia and Europe forgot everything about the rules of not to mix the football with other political issues. If you don't want to see the truth and think fair, it's no point of all this human rights etc

In Qatar, government projects are awarded to big contractors - mostly managed by foreigners. They hire workers from overseas through agencies in south East Asian countries. The agency takes fees from the companies/contractors. As a result Contractors expect the workers to not work elsewhere once the workers arrive in Qatar. The government cannot control every single recruitment happening in the private sector - which is run by foreigners themselves. For decades, workers have been coming to Qatar from south east Asia willingly (nobody forces them on planes). The workers know that conditions in their countries (and in Europe) are worse than in Qatar.
