just came across this , so helpful, going to learn the melody first (as advised!) then back to this. Bought you a coffee, you are so generous to make everything so accessible and available 😊

So incredibly helpful! Thanks. I love that you suggest a person get the tune down first, and then come back to work on the lesson. I expect to some viewers, doing this is the obvious approach, but to us over achievers, we think we should get it all together, without breaking it down into steps, and then we get frustrated, and hate ourselves. LOL. Your approach and realistic view on learning help so much!

Good lesson. This is where people make the transition from fiddle tunes to bluegrass and start getting the right tone. I bought your lessons and find them very useful, but this adds to all of those.

Learn from this, then go buy David Grisman’s CD called “Life of Sorrow.” Every song is slow and filled with tasty double stops. Use the techniques you learned here to figure out the notes Dawg is playing, then play along with him. Your playing will be transformed. Loosen up, stop trying to play fiddle tunes note for note, and use the double stops to come up with a fuller sound that sounds great even solo.

Thanks soon much for your lessons and your unselfish contributions to those of us who want to learn more. Just playing a tune alone gets boring and somewhat robotic but to learn HOW to extend your feelings into it through embellishments like double stops, cross picking etc is allowing an individual to take it to an art form by his own expression of the tune. Thanks again.

Fantastic lessons, I play a lot of irish music but I have found your videos a fantastic intro to bluegrass mandolin. I have put together a set consisting of the songs from these videos and play them as a set of tunes in a bluegrass style with the double stops etc. thanks again

Baron, Finally it's coming together! I remember the confusion I had about playing Melody, and I asked you if the chords were played during Melody, but now I understand that what I heard was double stops notes....THANK YOU!

I've been struggling with this concept for a while and this is the most helpful video I've seen. I can play any melody that I know the tune of by ear without problems but was stuck on simple single line melody. This video makes the path clear to expanding my solos...thanks a lot.

Thanks for sharing this info! There seems to be a shortage of vids showing how to "ornament" tunes...great explanation and examples! Flop Eared Mule is one of my tunes and it always makes me laugh, for some reason. Thanks again.

Thanks so much for your lessons and the time you've contributed to help people like me learn my way around the mandolin. I have a question for you: When I play a double stop on the first note of the song (the F note on the E strong along with open A), I keep getting a terrible ringing song. Strings are in tune so it's not that. Any suggestions?

Dumb question from total beginner: When you play notes they're really sharp. On my, whenever I play something my mandolin is really loud and kinda rings out for a long time. Am I missing something? Thanks anyone that can help.

Thanks for this, Baron! I've been looking for this tutorial. I was just at the lesson on your website and didn't see the notation link. I like to learn by ear, but also like to keep a library of .pdfs, if it could be put on there. Many thanks! Matthew

Thank you so much! Your lessons are SO good. I'm curious as to why this is called "double stops" . Do you know? I'm always curious about things. I get why it's called double but where does the word stop come in?
@user-tk4tm8zr7c
@user-tk4tm8zr7c 5 ай бұрын
It means playing two strings at the same time. As you advance after this lesson, it will mean holding down two strings at once---hence a double stop.
