I would not have thought of removing the back of the drawer to let the top tray slide back into the cabinet while the drawer is open. That makes this way more compelling than a setup where the top tray is only half-depth or has to be removed to access the drawer contents below.

I was in the middle of adding drawers to an existing cabinet when I saw this video. My original plan was to add two drawers but found that I wasn't going to be able do that. Then I changed plans to have a drawer within a drawer. I was going to have the inside drawer be half the depth of the outside drawer. But after watching this video I thought I don't have to do that. I would like to report that I built box my drawer and I used this drawer design, and it turned out fantastic. Couldn't be happier with the result.

I was in the process of designing a double drawer system like this for the new kitchen units I’ll be building myself. I’d already realised I needed to reduce the height of the rear panel of the lower drawer to permit a full sized top drawer but was thinking I’d have then to mount the upper drawer on its own separate metal drawer slides to prevent it tipping down at the rear when almost fully open. Then I came across this video and was immediately impressed by the anti-tipping solution at 3:40 - slightly reduce the height of the sides of the upper drawer and fix runner strips to the inside faces of the lower drawer sides at their back end. The strip of paper to provide a slight clearance and thus prevent the upper drawer from jamming was pure genius to my mind. The simplest solutions are so often the best. Thank you so much.

A superb video. I understood the fine points, Taking out half the back is genius. The top can be a full tray instead of half only. the rear stops are also a necessary touch since the top now extends over the bottom. This is a very needed fix for my RV drawers and also home kitchen and studio cabinets. Many thanks for an excellent video.

All the other two-tiered drawer organizer I’ve seen have drawers slides installed. I like your friction design a lot better. Even installing the dividers without glue or nails makes it so much more versatile if you decide to make changes in the future. Genius! I especially like the idea of not creating a bottom box. This will not only make it simpler, but will allow for more room. Hey, ever inch counts , right?
@cardsfanbj6 жыл бұрын
My grandpa's old workbench has a very similar idea. If you don't want to do surgery on the drawers, what he did is just a half drawer on top that can slide out of the way to get at the bottom half. Then you can also remove the tray if what's on bottom is too large to take out with it in.

It is tips like cutting down the back of the drawer so a top try can slide farther back is worth the time it takes to watch these videos. I'm known as the clever one in the family. I'm always coming up with ideas to use an item other than its intended purpose but, this never occurred to me. Great tip Mark! Thank you. And welcome Jason!! I did something similar to my kitchen drawers a couple of years ago but never thought of doing that to my shop cabinets. I just looked at my shop cabinets and do have a few drawers that this would work on. Thanks for the tip Marc! One good tip deserves another... I found that cutting 90 corners to make room for the slider on the first drawer weakened the back on my first drawer. On the rest of the kitchen drawers I drilled the holes first ( as you did to make room for the jigsaw blade) as a curve is stronger than a right angle and that solved the problem on the remaining drawers. I also used some UHMW tape on the bottom of each side to reduce wear and friction on the runners.

I love this, the only thing that I would need to watch out for would be seasonal changes. I don't have a heated garage and we go from +35 to -30c and have reasonably high humidity.
