Underrated comment! I’m 54 - grew up watching my dad do all kinds of projects, from building original Apple computers to building our TV, sewing his own jackets & sleeping bags, tatting lace like his mom, & making all sorts of wood projects - like the cabinet for our TV. For some reason, I can sew & taught myself to tat & I’ve always been a gadget girl. But for some reason, I’ve stayed away from the power tools. Maybe because I was a little girl & told to stand back so I “wouldn’t get hurt”? I think it’s definitely a holdover I wished I’d gotten over! I really would love a huge woodworking shop with all the toys, just for the smell alone, ya know??😅

My dad taught me to use peel and stick tile on the inside of my cabinets, the tile cleans up easy and can be taken up with a hairdryer and a putty knife if you want to change or replace. Love how you did not over talk the subject and got right to work.

Contact paper works well for lining shelves as well and can be cut to fit, without the seams between tiles which can "leak." It's not as easy to find in stores as it was a few decades ago, however, in my experience.

I asked my handy husband to do this when we moved into our house 18 years ago, BEST improvement EVER! He did all the kitchen base cabinets and all the bathroom base cabinets. Now that I'm 71 it is a God send not to have to crawl on the floor to clean and/or find something at the back of any of my cabinets.

There is something else you might love. Age makes it painful for me to do a deep knee bend. I bought a few plastic rolling garden carts. Picture a small heavy duty plastic tote on wheels. I can sit very comfortably on the cart to weed my garden, put air in my tires, or scrub my floors. Also it is easier to stand up from a sitting position than it is getting up from the floor.

Those kits are so expensive so I appreciate this! I’m disabled and it is hard for me to get things from my lower cupboards. I checked into the kits to help make it more accessible and it just can’t be done once your income become is affected by disability. Ironically, the things people with limited mobility need just to be independent in the rest of the world are too expensive if they become unable to work very much. We become very creative in getting our needs met. This video is extremely helpful and I think my son can actually help me do this! Thanks!

This is especially handy, for someone with health issues and limitations. I absolutely don’t understand why this isn’t a stander for home builders??? Makes life so much easier. The digging that takes place every time you need something, you end up pulling everything out before you find what you need, because more often then not what you need is all the way in the back! IT WILL NEED 2"X4" BUT SAME TECHNIQUE. I HOPE TO finish this now with a pull out boxes that we already had made. I was about to give up and Order pegs online and just put plywood shelving in there. Since it is 2 foot deep cabinet that was made for an inset oven and I am using it for food storage, it will really help to have the rollouts to be able to rotate stock properly and reach to the back. This video was such a blessing for me thank you. It has a large face frame

Wonderful idea. An alternative to small rectangles for the shims is to simply fit a panel to either side or 4 narrow boards that are the height of the cabinet. That way you would have the option to change the height of the shelf by simply relocating the screws or installing an additional track.

That’s a tip to be remembered...how easy. Take a phone-pic, use a flashlight to get a good shot. Plan the job by starting out right, take a picture will bring the job eye-level. Just seeing this two years after its been posted. Nice clear video that's to-the-point without a lot of extra babbling. The only suggestion I have is to install the slides in the base cabinet first, put in the shelf slides next, and then measure the distance across for the shelf width. Worked much better when I did this to my bathroom vanity's shelves. And in 2022 the price of those slides in 16" length is up to $9 at HD (inflation . . . grrrr!!). EDIT: Also forgot to add that I put a 6.5" drawer pull handle on the top-front of shelves I installed - makes it easier to slide it in-and-out, and keeps stuff from falling forward and off onto the floor.

I did this, but I turned the slides on their sides so they were laying flat. They work just as well and still soft close perfectly. Doubled the storage in my only large kitchen cabinet.

I've been subscribed for a few months, but to be honest I put you on the back burner, catching up on other channels with bush crafting , hiking/overnight camping. You have so many cool ideas. Can't wait to use this idea in my kitchen. I have top shelves on my bottom cabinets that are only half the width , so this will add so much more storage, along with the added accessibility of the full shelf. Guess I need to go on an Ana White binge to get some more ideas, thank you!

Why no shims on the left side if both sides of the cabinet have face frame? You did a great job and it was easy to understand your directions.

The divider between the L and R sides of the cabinet was already flush with the frame, so a shim wasn’t needed.

I would recommend furring out the entire length of the slide for face-framed cabinets. We have some pull-outs that were here when we bought the place. Over time, the slides have bent where they aren’t supported by the shims, and now I need to beat up my knees and back to replace them. The former owners might have used too light-duty of slides, but a few more materials might mean fewer headaches down the road.

What do you recommend if your cabinet is a double door cabinet and doesn't have the inner divider between the two sections - install a divider with pocket screws so you can mount the drawer slide?

I’d run a 2x4 from the face frame back, parallel to the cabinet bottom. Then you can mount drawer slides on either side since the 2x4 width will match the 1x2 width. If you can’t attach to the back of the cabinet, you can add a “leg” at the back of the 2x4

Great video - first time on the channel but I like how well you organized the project and your thoughts. Lots of DIY videos assume I have fancy tools or I automatically know how to cut tiles and I appreciate that you explained your tools quickly. Three questions: (1) why the shims only one side? (2) wouldn't the shelf be a little too wide once you put the tracks on? (3) Did you have to worry at all about the screw going threw the cabinet.
