I came up with the idea myself too. Main issue is the game needs to be first person, with all parts belonging to the player being rendered separately. (As is done in most titles.)

This is an extension of other ideas, like how the interface in games is excluded from DLSS. This is also related to the idea of true predicted frames as opposed to these post-processed inserted frames that increase latency. Total latency should be about one frame more than with DLSS 2, so the lower your frame rate the worse it gets. This technology has been discussed for a while to improve VR's frame pacing and reduce nausea.
@TheGc13psj

@@AGuy-vq9qp why do you think it needs to be rendered first person? 2KliksPhilip specifically showed it working on a third person demo, and there's no reason it wouldn't work on like a top down game as well, especially using foveated rendering
@LofiTurtle_
@LofiTurtle_ Жыл бұрын
@@TheGc13psj The issue with some 3rd person cameras is that the rendered image that gets moved by mouse inputs is only from one point of view, but a 3rd person orbit camera would change it's position as you rotated it. Projecting an old frame and rotating it wouldn't account for the change in position. You can see this easily when using low-powered VR (like a quest) and moving your head quickly. Your view rotates smoothly, but foreground objects still stutter as they move with respect to the background.

@@AGuy-vq9qp there is no difference between first and third person games because they both use a camera. Whether you place the camera on the characters head/chest or floating behind them doesn't matter because the mechanics behind the camera opperate the same in both cases.

I'm surprised people only recently started only talking about it. This was already heavily discussed as a tech potentially useful for traditional games *10 years* ago when Carmack published his Timewarp research (titled "Latency mitigation strategies") in the early 2012, when he was still at iD Software and even in original paper he mentioned use for normal games, especially cloud streamed games. But it was mainly for VR, so I guess people not following progress of VR tech didn't know much about it.

@@cozymonk I mean it pretty much depends on the refresh rate of your display and it's response time and the response time of the software. It's just a different metric which measures something different. If you can't have a high frame rate you won't have great input response. I mean you can delay frames until the last possible time point before the panel refresh, which would be the best answer in terms of input response, even better than producing more fps, but if the frame takes longer you'll miss the panel refresh, but this also depends how fast a frame takes to be rendered (frametime), which is inverse proportional to fps. The other thing is smoothness, even if you have very low input lag, but otherwise low framerate the game would still be awful to play I agree to a point that fps shouldn't be seen as low input lag, as many people do. but it has it place for a reason.

I'm pretty sure DCS in VR already renders wider FOV and then "pan" in that render depending on the VR headset movement and desynchronized from the rendering. This is quite visible in some scenarios when screencaping the host PC. It is also visible when flying low on the side and you can see the threes stuttering as if the game was rendering at 30fps (plane movement), but if you shake your head a little bit it is very fluid like the 90Hz of the headset (head movement). Conventional lighting tech is so good at imitating RT for a fraction of the performance hit, and at least for now, enabling RT means you have to use image and frame upscaling and lower other settings to claw back that performance hit. Considering this requires software/engine support, I'm surprised they don't appear to have a mechanism to separate UI elements as something to not apply frame generation to. Compositing the UI elements from the last non-generated frame and having your UI move at half the framerate of the action would probably be less distracting than having it flicker. Or apply a camera-based motion vector to the non-static UI elements before compositing instead of just lumping everything into the frame together. Maybe this is too complex or something somehow, but elements of this are already done with various anti-aliasing techniques so you don't blur the UI anyway.

It doesn't feel like an insurmountable challenge, but there's a non-trivial amount of development work required. The easy part is training the DLSS3 neural network with UI disabled (which is likely just a game engine flag), toggling that same flag during rendering for players when DLSS3 is enabled, and then rendering UI on top. The difficult part is interpolating position data from a raster frame with the next raster frame, taking care of any temporal differences between DLFG (DLSS3)'s generated frame (which does take acceleration into consideration) while a naive interpolation may not and can cause UI position to vibrate at 1/2 of refresh rate, and then drawing UI with that data on top. It while it may not be a particularly worse implementation that the current state with the vibration, it does require a lot of developer involvement.

I'm on the fence. I'd hate the flickering as seen in F1. I also mostly turn motion blur off, so I probably wouldn't mistake artefacts for it. I also don't think that I'd feel that I had to lower my settings much if I had a 30fps lock in a game like Spiderman, but, in some other low framerate scenario, I do see how I may be interested in something like this for smoothing out the hitches if it enabled me to keep nice lighting and stuff. I guess that it's nice to have an option. One of the crucial questions here for me is how well this is going to work on lower end hardware that has less muscle, in particular less AI muscle. I think the real solution for me is just, as mentioned near the end, decoupling input and display. If lower framerates didn't introduce more input latency (and it's much worse on some engines than others), then I personally don't have a big issue with low framerates, as long as they are relatively consistent and the frame times don't break the 30ms mark too much.

Frame stutters will take you out of an immersive experience quicker then anything else and while Input lag is annoying when it gets high, you can compensate for it in most cases (unless its really bad). I'd much rather take a little artifacting and run a game at max 4k than play a shooter at 75 fps.

This actually feels like a great solution to the game optimization problem, like how todays games are barely optimized for low end systems and even with setting set to low the framerate sometimes barely changes. This of course will only be aplicable when 40 series is already old, and if it actually catches on, and if devs don't go even lower with their standards for optimization... So yeah, seems cool, but just like raytracing it needs to be out there first to prove itself.
@K31TH3R
@K31TH3R Жыл бұрын
I mean, you're not wrong. But I think the better solution is actually optimizing the game for the hardware that's out there. A lot of developers make statements like "we're designing our game for future hardware so the highest settings are expected to perform poorly on current hardware" only for everyone to find out 10 years later that the game still runs like dog shit despite the fact the hardware is 100x faster. AMD and nVidia are advertising DLSS and FSR as such key features, but to me, what they're actually saying is "our hardware cannot keep up with the software, so here's a crutch which sacrifices image quality for better performance to make your $1000 GPU work more tolerably." It's an absolute joke, and there is clearly a communication breakdown happening somewhere if upsampling technology and a sacrifice of fidelity/resolution is what we need to be doing after the decades that GPU hardware has had to mature. The entire direction of the industry seems to be favoring incompetence.

I will be honest, the idea of decoupling input from the framerate is way more interesting to me. It would make 1% lows so much more tolerable with, I assume, little impact to performance. Frame generation is a cool concept but at the cost of latency is a hard pass for me, it also smells like diminishing returns. Now, it would be more interesting if its goal was to deliver more consistent framerates, rather than higher, making up those frames on demand to meet a certain target, maintaining peak visual fidelity and lower latency when it is not necessary.

honestly., i think they should drop DLSS and work on utilizing the gpu for other things integrated PBR(physically based rendering) library in the GPU or something along those lines, to offload the work on the graphics artists and lower texture loading if the gpu is just told this face is iron, brushed, and other then some alignment tweaks its just a wireframe and as it is loaded and rendered with that in mind, it would end up rendering faster and then the gpu can flush out more frames and not have to worry about predicting frames if it can just pump them out faster

@JJFX-
@JJFX- Жыл бұрын
IMO, right now it's a half-baked feature that is essentially a gimmick for the marketing dept.. Eventually it may get polished to the point of being fairly indistinguishable but it'll require more support from developers to optimize (like rendering some of the UI separately). Input lag will get better but it's going to take a lot of time. I was originally only interested in the potential for cheaper GPUs/laptops but while that'll be helpful for some it's clear the negatives become far more significant at low fps. For high fps, you're paying for a top GPU because of its ability to pump out frames. Not to inject a bunch of fake frames with more artifacts that doesn't even give a latency advantage like DLSS 2.0. I would not buy a GPU because of this feature and am getting tired of all the marketing nonsense around it.

@@13thzephyr I would be 100% surprised. Nvidia doesn't make a habit of adding new features to old GPUs. If anything, it's the opposite. They added ray tracing support on the 10 series to increase awareness because it ran terrible. People content with their maxed out 1080p performance now have a shiny new feature pointing out how their cards are outdated. DLSS 3.0 support would only make people less likely to upgrade. In its current form, it's mostly a tool to market new products. AMD will probably enable FSR 3 for most their modern cards but the only way I could see Nvidia doing it is if they wanted more beta testers and 40 series stops selling well.

I know the generated frames with a 4090 are a lot better than what a C2 oled can do today, and that the input lag is a lot better with DLSS 3.0, but it's extremely shocking to me how NOW it's cool to interpolate frames, and it was a sacrilege to play a ps4 pro game at 60 or 120 fps with a bit of input lag, even a year ago.
