DOUBLE your Sampling time on the Emu or Rossum SP1200

Here, I demonstrate a useful trick that can, more than, double the length of your E-MU (or Rossum!) SP1200's Sample 'play back'.

Any idea why I can’t seem to get a full 2.5 second long sample recorded on to just one pad on my all grey sp-1200? Always stops recording before 2.5. Pretty sure I’ve checked the set sample length. Any ideas? Thank you for your videos, always top shelf. expert level.

If you're not permitted to Sample a full 2.5 seconds, then it's likely there are other Samples occupying the memory. You'll need the majority of memory 'available' to be able to achieve the full 2.5 second length. After that, the Sample length diminishes 👍🏼

Thanks very much 🙏🏻 well, I'm pretty much just relying on gut.. and ears.. + there's not a lot of wiggle-room with the SP1200 (being a 12bit Sampler) not a great deal of Dynamic range to be 'picky' about.. it's a little bit like... 'if you don't like what it throws back atcha..' reach for something else to Sample. But, you rarely have to do that as it can take really 'average' sounding stuff and transform it into a brutal imitation, with an enriched, or nice, harmonic / overtone 👍🏻

@@tonelabqt I like to prep my samples in Logic before sampling into the SP. So to mimick that turntable double speed thing i guess its pitching up 5 semi tones in Logics sampler?

@@197979jones I also do that at times.. but, the idea behind 'this trick' is.. you don't really need to adhere to 45rpm.. because, you can go even further and 'double' if you 'shift' your Logic Sampler 'key' up 1 octave.. because, if you do that + use 'this trick', you'll essentially double the 10 seconds in your 1200.. into 20 seconds. But, if you 'specifically' need to replicate the 'old vinyl' trick, then that would be.. hmm.. well, a 100BPM track (on 33 1/3rd) .. would play back 1.36x faster on 45RPM 🤔

@@tonelabqt Yeah i dont think 33 to 45 is double time as such? That would be 66rpm.....So 'double time' in the vinyl sense is the difference between 33 and 45 added on? Im sure i read somewhere its 5.37 semi tones. Confusing. Just actually doubling it (an octave) will do - more gritty

@@197979jones Yeah, definitely not 'double', but.. in the old days.. when everyone had turntables.. that would be the most common way.. unless you had a 78RPM deck, with 'Pitch Control'.. you could play a 33 on 78rpm and pitch it down a little.. that'd get you pretty close to double 'and then some', or less... so yeah, the 45 trick was cool.. but, I'm scratching my head over exactly what that would be in terms of 'pitch shifts' .. probably easier to put on a record with a long 'synth' lead intro, pitch it up to 45rpm and sit there with an iPhone tuner app 🤓

When sampling, is it a specification that an attack is added as if a transient shaper is used?

Well, with 12bit you don't get much dynamic range.. so, if the concern is about whether or not the 'Threshold' trigger will sever the transient or attack of your Sample, which does happen.. easily too.. then what I sometimes do, and can suggest is, put a tiny Square/Pulse wave about 15ms in front of your audio content.. and 'that' will trip the SP1200's 'threshold' into Recording.. then, this way, the Pulse will be severed rather than the beginning of your audio content's attack 👍🏼

@@tonelabqt The reason I ask this is because I am using EPS-M and I am using EPS-M and would like to create a pseudo sp1200 sound using transient designer on the output.

@@ttzzou I'd say it'd be the lack there of dynamic range.. it sorta gives off an impression everything is being compressed. the ADSR?! .. well, put simply, there is none 😆 .. it's literally 'Note-ON' immediate start.. however, there is decay 👍🏼

@@ttzzou ahh, I see.. then, I'd probably suggest something along the line of Attack=0, Decay=99, Sustain=0, Release=99. and what ever you Sample in.. 'play it in' an Octave up, and pitch it 'down' an Octave once inside the EPS. That would be fairly close.. and remove any velocity sensitivity too👍🏼
