Hi Tracie, it's easy when you know how LOL! I grew up with the imperial system here in the UK and had to learn metric. To confuse matters more, I lived in California for 20 years and was a patchwork and quilting tutor. I came home in 1999 and struggled with the metric system again (even though I passed my maths GCE 'A' level course in the 1970's) I now manage to juggle between the two when necessary. Thanks for all your lovely tutorials and for sharing so much info, Elaine

I was an Algebra, Biology, and Human Anatomy teacher for our high school for years until I became disabled by MS. American students have difficulty with our measurement system, too!! But what's worse, is the simple base 10 of the metric system is even more boggling to them! I never understood why it seemed so daunting! I'll also never understand why America never went to the metric system in the 70s when it came up for referendum!! You explained it quite well. I love when there is an envelope in the center of a signature, and this double envelope is such a surprise! What a BRILLIANT idea!! Thank you so much for sharing! You are so inspiring with your ideas and your tutorials are excellent! Don't be so critical of yourself, you show us a REAL crafter! I'd lots rather have your explanation than a "perfect" presentation!! Thanks again!!!

LOL, there is never going to be a perfect presentation with me!!! I cannot believe I had made one not 10 minutes before and I forgot I cut the middle in a square! Glad you like the ideas, its nice now to have some time to try them out. xxx

To answer the comment about why America didn't go metric in the 70's. It was expensive. It would have required all the tooling in all of the industries be re-manufactured and it was fought by many businesses. My Dad was an Automotive Mechanical Engineer and all three of the big car manufacturers resisted and there was more resistance from more industries who used tool and die resources.

I love this idea - I don't want to close the tag until I make one! LOL! This metric vs imperial thing is frustrating until you realize that so many things are already metric! I got my first Brother sewing machine when I was 19 (1965)... and, for the life of me, I could NOT figure out what the stitch length numbers meant! Seriously - NOTHING in that machine's info - or my next one - specifically explained it. I grew up with a White sewing machine and used Singers at school - they were all x stitches per inch - which is a pretty strange way of thinking now. Finally, in the 90's I bought my first Pfaff and something clicked - they use the metric system! I think I actually measured the stitches and viola!!! Sigh. I flip back and forth when measuring, depending on which comes closer to what I'm measuring. And, 99% of my tools are in inches. I learned that a meter is almost 39 1/2 inches when I was working in a fabric store and a lot of eastern Europeans would come in and wanted to buy fabric by the meter. I didn't have time to figure it out, but I did let them know how to do it themselves! I figured that living here, they will be buying fabric by the yard for years to come and they needed to learn how to adjust. ;) We always feel a bit more empowered when we understand how to do things in a new way! That's why I love KZbin - and people like you, Tracie! So much fun to learn new things!

Tracie, I don't know how to work w/cm but I do know inches; so I did one with paper that was 9" 1/2 X 9" 1/2 's and scored it at 4 " 3/4 which gave me a square of 6" 1/4 X 6"14 but when folded in half I had a 6" 1/4 X 3" 1/4. I did it first on a cheap piece of paper and now I'm making them w/cardstock. I LOVE all Your tutorials .! I just wish I knew cm! Thank You for sharing this with us and all the others You shared! You ROCK. (If anyone that knows inches and figures out how to make a bigger one, could You share with us please? !
