they didn't just speak Japanese. Sanada made sure they have people to help them to speak the actual court language of Japan at the time, which is very different than modern Japanese. It's like all of them speaking in Shakespearean English. Also the costume, mannerism, it's just like a NHK Taiga drama. This is so impressive that most Japanese are enjoying this production.

All this attention to detail but then they kinda ruin the illusion when they keep mentioning being fluent in portuguese, etc, but carry on talking in english. They even have portuguese actors in some of the roles and don't take advantage of it. I get why they did it that way, but still, it's a shame.
@jyrrin8 ай бұрын
@@numberoftheword that was actually confusing af - he asks the translator how she got so good in Portuguese and then I was like, are they SUPPOSED to be speaking in Portuguese? rodrigues speaking with a spanish accent and then john speaking with a heavy English accent kinda contradicts them supposedly speaking Portuguese, unless that was intentional to let the audience know the characters are from Spain and England. but then John speaks to the other English sailors from the boat in English and there's no mention of him supposedly switching to Portuguese when speaking to any of the Japanese characters. the only way I could justify it is that john was just asking her how her Portuguese got so well with English being an unmentioned language she knows as well...tbh I'm still not sure if they were supposed to be speaking in English or Portuguese. great show nonetheless but ya, this was hella throwing me off.
@jessplays328 ай бұрын
@@jyrrin so there's a movie technique that the first time I saw them do it is in the mummy. So it's a way to let people know that this person is speaking at different language, but it removes the need for subtitles. So the camera will zoom in real close to the person. Speaking of different language, so in this case Japanese and then it will slow. It was zoom in and we will start to hear them speak English and as it zooms out they start speaking English where we can understand. This technique is to show that we are hearing this character speak English, but they're actually speaking in their original language in this case Japanese. It is a very subtle but effective way to express someone speaking to different language but us the viewer are hearing English. I love the interpreter because her being there lets you know that hey, even though we may hear tanagas speaking english, he's actually speaking Japanese and that language barrier is still there. So I know it seems confusing but that's why you have to pay attention.
@jyrrin8 ай бұрын
@@jessplays32 sorry, you're explanation doesn't make sense (respectfully). The camera technique you described would mean the Japanese characters would be speaking English and John would be understanding Japanese, which he doesn't. the only Japanese character that actually speaks English is Mariko, but I (and i believe @numberoftheword) were left wondering whether John and Mariko were actually speaking Portuguese because her fluency in the language is always being brought up despite them conversing in English - it would've made sense if they were talking about her fluency in English but they were probably trying to be historically accurate because the Portuguese were the ones trading with Japan and not England. it's not confusing because i'm not paying attention, it's confusing because it just simply wasn't explained to the audience if they in fact were conversing in Portuguese this whole time. you actually might be confused yourself because apparently you heard Toranaga speak English somewhere.
@robertbreedlovecraft8 ай бұрын
I love how they handle the language in this and not just the period accurate Japanese. There's a scene where the Jesuit translates for Sanada's daimyo and Blackthorne is naturally distrustful of him misconstruing his words. But as they all develop a modicum of trust, the show edits out the translator and the dialogue between Blackthorne and Sanada just flows as if it were a natural conversation. Reminded me of what John McTiernan did in 13th Warrior

I am loving the new adaptation, but don't dismiss the original mini-series out of hand. It was filmed on location in Japan using special built locations as well as using some of the historical buildings. The acting was great and it was groundbreaking in the use of having coordination with the Japanese film crews along with American. The music may be a little dated and of course the cameras were not to the level they may be now, but it was and still is a masterpiece. Also, the masterful performances of John Rhys-Davies as Rodriguez and the legendary Toshiro Mifune as Toranaga are hard to match.

Hey! The original Shogun was good for its time. It was made for tv so the budget wasn't as good as what films got and it was tv for all audiences rather than like cable series which include violence, sex, drug use, cursing, etc. I was a young girl when Shogun came out, so I didn't really watch it, but saw it later after reading the book. Quite frankly, it was great, but it had too much to sqieeze in for too little time, so the pacing was off. The book was over 1000 pages. Maybe 1200. That's a lot to squeeze in to a few hours.

I am intrigued by the show and the visuals are certainly impressive and modern (for whatever that’s worth… not much imo some things I absolutely love others bore me… just not a fan of modern CGI🤷♂️). Those lenses with all that distortion are a puzzling choice to me. Love the lighting/dynamic range we’ve come to expect from these types of productions. I’m disappointed by all the changes to the story and characters. I’m choosing to be patient and allow them to do whatever it is they’re trying to do here, but Toranaga, Ishido, Blackthorne, Yabu (even changed his name for some reason), Omi and especially Mariko are all different people that what we get in the book and the miniseries. I suspect this is their attempt to modernize this story. But this is a story set in feudal Japan. There are things that just wouldn’t have been in that setting. I’m hoping they don’t go too far. Some things feel like they were messed with just because. The original fishing village “Anjiro” was changed to “Ajiro.” Why? I assume there’s a good reason. It’s getting critical acclaim. So I’m intrigued. Curious where this goes. The score (if you can call it that) falls flat in the way that is so common today. No dynamics, just droning on and on. I get that’s just a fashion thing so I guess it’s ok. The miniseries had very late 70s, tv western music that didn’t age well either. As a fan of the book who grew up watching the original miniseries, I was so excited. Now I’m on the fence but still hopeful. If this ends up being its own thing but still good, I’ll be happy with that.

I'm actually reading a history of the yakuza right now and a lot those proto-Yakuza gangs of the 18th and 19th century had both official and unofficial sanction from the shogunate to work their rackets, as long as they kept the peace and of course paid their cut to the government. That kind of corruption was embedded *deep* within Japanese institutions even after the country left the feudal era and modernized

Feudalism in medieval Europe was also basically just organized crime families sanctioned by the Church. When for whatever reason modern-day rule of law isn't present, it just seems to be filled in by these kind of hierarchical structures based on the ability to inspire the loyalty of ruthless killers.

Richard Chamberlain was the king of "Epic TV Movie Mini-Series" with Shogun and The Thorn Birds....

I've read the novel maybe 5 times over the years and saw the first miniseries adaptation when it came out. So far I've seen the first two episodes of the new one and it's a masterpiece. It could come apart between now and episode 10 but I doubt it. "It's like the mafia..." Yeah, it's really fun watching this series at the same time I'm watching S2 of "Tokyo Vice."

FX is one of the best networks on TV, and I usually trust them with their quality shows, even the ones made exclusively on Hulu. Shōgun is no exception. The first two episodes were phenomenal! I'm already loving the epic scope of it so far, and I'm excited for more episodes!

Because FX is Disney

@@EmperorDxD I know, but it feels like Disney is letting FX do their own thing and not micromanage everything they do. If they did, we wouldn't have shows like this or The Bear.

If he watched it at 1080p he is correct. 4K is UHD.

If you're watching on Hulu, there is a 'dubbed' version of each episode in one of the tabs. I watched one dubbed episode, it's pretty good actually. All the Japanese parts spoken in English. Kinda like in the normal episodes, the parts where they're supposed to be speaking in Portuguese are spoken in English. :D

I wasn't going to watch this show but fine, I gave it a try after seeing the thumbnail. I was gonna avoid this one because the most-likely plot is overdone and predictable a la Marco Polo (the Netflix series) and it's borderline The Last Samurai again in series form (the main Japanese lead is literally from that movie), but the production quality is sooo good. Congrats on getting me hooked. I just finished the 3rd episode and it's 5:42 fking AM

Yes the show does look great. I even like how they do this type of circular focus on characters that it wants you to pay attention to. It's real subtle, but it has a very nice effect that you usually see on only movies.

I'm still in love with warrior because it's based on the wave of immigration and their fight to establish themselves in the americas after the hebros were freed , finished the railroads, and couldn't get in on any of the action to establish themselves like the foreign immigrants. It's connected to the established business and land they currently have today because of our free labor.
