@@Altmer353 That is also commendable, but it can be especially had when it comes to live-actions, because many things that look enchanting and mystifying in comics, especially the more fantastical elements, can very easily look cheesy and distracting in live-action. Part of what took the project so long might have been just waiting for technology to catch up, but even then they really needed to figure out what designs work in the translation to real people. Also, there's a difference in audience demographics, as the original comics had DC superheroes and can expect a good portion of the audience to be comic readers accepting of that type of content, while a live-action show is aiming to reach a broader audience and make it entertaining and easy to follow to them too.

I don't mind race swapping the siblings because Death in particular changes often. She is arguably the siblings most invested in people to the point that she will occasionally become human to make sure she remembers what the people she has to reap are going through. I buy that she may change her appearance here and there to better connect with different types of people. The actress got the spirit of Death right and that's what matters most to me. Initially I was a bit annoyed we didn't see John Constantine but in the grand scheme the choice mad sense since John doesn't show up later and I believe HBO is making a John Constantine show so they probably want to avoid confusion.

I loved the episode with Hob Gadling. Seeing how much his life changes over hundred of years was fascinating. " I've hated every second of the past 80 years..." And the fact he still wanted to keep living after everything, the good and the bad. I wasn't the biggest fan of gender swapping John to Joanna Constantine, especially since they acted the same way I expected John Constantine to act. And we have a great John Constantine with Matt Ryan. I guess it would be confusing since it might confuse folks whether it's in the CW Arrowverse. Idk if John is still around there, I think he's with those Legends of Tomorrow. It's also a pet peeve but I hated how they kept saying "Constantyne" instead of "Constanteen", maybe to separate it from the DC character? Apparently Etrigan the Demon was also supposed to be in Hell but again I guess they really wanted to downplay the DC Universe connections. Overall I liked it, had good music, performances and the CGI gives Stranger Things a run for its money.

Johanna is a character in the comics but lived in the 1700s. They gave all of John’s story to modern day Johanna but I was surprised how much stuff from hell blazer made it into the show. Gender swaped version of Rick the Vic, references to Chas, Renne, Kit Ryan, Mad Hettie, Mucous Membrane, Casonova Club in New Castle, and Astra. I think it would be cool if in the adaptation when we do the whole French Revolution Orpheus plot, John Constantine is actually Johanna’s ancestor that helps Dream. It would be a pretty great twist. Edit: also the whole side plot with the princess and the possession was a reference to the HellBlazer story Royal Blood. I’d recommend reading all of Hellblazer. Some of it is mediocre like the Paul Jenkins and Peter Milligan’s run but most of it is really good(Delano, Azerello, Diggle, Ellis) and some of it is just straight up brilliant (Ennis and Carey.) it’s 300 issues plus a number of limited issues and John ages in real time. Probably the most underrated comic of all time.

Lucifer Morningstar doesn't have a gender, and neither does Desire. Neil Gaiman himself has said that those characters were never meant to have genders in the first place, but didn't have the way to describe them when he originally wrote the series. I knew nothing at all about the books but I never felt lost or confused. I didn't necessarily understand everything about the mechanics of the universe but that's true of any realistic universe. Leaving shadows gives a sense of depth.

From the episodes I’ve seen so far Tom Sturridge seems spot on! His humanity will come through the more he adventures in the human realm! That’s a key element of the comics. I like his gravitas as opposed to James McAvoy’s interpretation from the recent Audible blockbuster production. McAvoy is great but it’s the gravelly depth that sells Dream!

To be fair the serial killers just knew that The Corinthians was a serial killer too. They knew he had been killing for a while and were surprised at how young he looked. I never got the sense they had any inkling about the mystical world. But that's just me.

I remember then the Verigo comics hit the store and all the stuff in them was adult and challenging. When I heard they were trying to do adaptations I was worried. It was the 90’s and you know the stuff we got then and to see Sandman and Death stories “butchered” (half pun) was something I did not want to see. If it is good I am there. And Death was a character that would take different forms. I look forward to seeing what the actress does because she had a bigger personality then she had a “look” and she had a huge look.

I love the character of Hob Gadling. He wished to live forever and was never cynical about his experiences. He became friends with Dream and was always optimistic about life, whereas most immortals wanted to die only after a century of pain.

The two casting issues I had were Patton Oswald as Matthew, and Gwendolyn Christie as Lucifer. Pattton’s voice doesn’t fit the show to me, and I didn’t think Lucifer was beautiful/sinister enough. I think tilda swinton as Gabriel in the Constantine movie had the aesthetic/vibe Lucifer should have had in this show. The rest of the casting was fine in my opinion.

Lucifer is supposed to be charming and convincing, almost irresistible and manipulative. I didn’t get that vibe.

I wholeheartedly agree With Martin about Death. She has such an iconic look and he's right: she was a figurehead for the goth culture movement. And he met her! The model who Death was based on, sadly passed away. And her signature look is her legacy. I think the actress did a fine job. I can't complain because she's a good actress. However, I do wish they stuck closer to her original look in terms of casting. Comics are such a visual medium and I think many fans do like it when we honor the source material in terms of depiction and accuracy. I hope i don't get knocked down for this. I love the show. The actress is great. But I do echo Martin's thoughts in my own way

Yeah, the Constantine thing is a rights issue. They still used A Constantine that was mentioned but never showed, just so they could fit the story. I’m sure DC said “no, we’re making a new show or movie, so you can’t use John as it will confuse people” or some other dumb excuse.
