11:09 Dream was not the one who gave immortality to Hob. It was Dearh who granted it. Dream can't grant immortality. He specifically said so (while narrating) in Sleep of the Just. Dream says of Roderick Burgess that "he pleaded for gifts that are not mankind's to receive nor mine to give." All Death did in the White Horse pub was ask Dream: "Are you going to tell him, or should I?" And I don't think this implies in any way that Dream can grant immortality. Giving Hob immortality was Death's gift to Dream. Or, perhaps she gave him this ability this one time as a gift for the sake of their wager. But I don't think so.
@UncleTonyK2 жыл бұрын
You took the words right out of my mouth Wolfie. To say that Dream granted immortality is a gross mischaracterization of what both Dream & Death are capable of. It also gives the mistaken impression that Dream can exercise his will in Death's domain. Though, it is clear in both the comic and show that Death is the older and more powerful sibling.

The Sound of her Wings was incoherent?! The first part is showing Dream how Death does her job and the Men Of Fortune (2nd half of the episode) showcases what it would be like when Death granted Hob Gadling the gift of immortality and he has to meet him every 100 years to see what has happened. In this, Dream learns what it's like to be human and no matter the ups and downs Hob goes through, he always manages to make it work. The first half shows Death doing her duties and sadness and the 2nd half showcases hope via Dream and Hobs meeting through the centuries.

I have a similar opinion to you of this episode. I think it was my favorite, actually, since I'm a bit done with all of the depictions of Death being an evil, malicious entity. i don't get why they called it incoherent either. i haven't read the comics, so even though it wasn't exactly the most exciting episode, it did a lot as far as character and world building. then again, the writer of this video called uncle barnaby a "controlling dad", instead of an abusive monster. so we can probably just chalk up the "incoherent" comment to the fact that the writer is a complete idiot.

I thought Netflix’s The Sandman was a surprisingly good adaptation. I still prefer the source material, the Audiobook from Audible and “DC Showcase: Death”, but still it was good as a show and as an adaptation. It was faithful for the most part (Considering the fact that Geiman was part of this), the cinematography was beautiful, the soundtrack was great, the special effects were pretty good (Some were really bad imo) and the majority of the actors did a nice job. Only big complaint is the camera format of the show. It looked too square for me. I don’t know how to explain this 😅 I’m kinda sad that this wasn’t a animated series instead tho. After watching that incredible Death animated short film (Which is amazing btw) made me imagine how the entire story would’ve looked like if it was animated. That would’ve been super cool. The only audio productions I've heard that compare to Sandman have all been Dirk Maggs productions. I get where you are coming from regarding to the cinematography. Not only that but among comic fans it is viewed as one of the best in the series so see thanks to the portrayal of Death as she perfectly embodied the maternal and empathic elements of the character 2 though correct regarding the licensing the inclusion of Johanna Constantine is NOT a gender swap as she is an actual character from the comic, John is her descendant and she does play a huge part in the Sandman mythos 3 the setup of full release isn’t all that taxing and if you like the show enough and as we are all familiar with binge watching it is easily possible to watch more than two or three episodes without a break

Almost all of the vortex plot follows the comic (except for the Lyta portions). Unity’s end is the same but does happen differently as Rose’s mom is alive and it’s only 3 generations of the family (not 4) that exist. Corinthian is a little more explicit in his influence of the “collectors” in the comics but I like that they changed it just for his existence among humans being enough to create that much trouble. However, in the comic he isn’t the one who saves Rose and Jed from Fun Land, that would be Dream himself as Gilbert tells Rose to say “Morpheus” should she be in trouble as he picked up on her being a possible vortex.

It’s interesting, when one looks to other sources the episode that this reviewer claims is the weakest is often seen as one of the strongest. I agree with your view of episode 6 (The Sound of her Wings) as a good one. It developed Dreams character, and explained why Death didn't intervene in Dream's imprisonment. The short vignettes of Death's work was enough as a glimpse into her role and how she overcame her own loneliness. "I don't do it alone." I don't see the reviewers comments as unjustified though, as we see stories differently, depending on our own live experiences. The review's value is in seeing the show through someone else's eyes. I really didn't like that they gave a crucial part of John Constantine's origin story to Johanna C., specifically the Astra incident wich is a very fundamental and personal event in John Constantine's background. They've missed the chance of making something original out of Johanna C. like making her the actual ancestor of John that is somehow still alive after hundreds of years and make her archetypically close to a classical victorian/high end detective as opposed to John's hard boiled/down in the rough detective archetype. But nope they did a supergirl again and just basically turned her into a gender flipped John and thus a bad copy of both John and the real/original Johanna Constantine.

I bought the Sandman comics as they came out, not in anthology, individual comics. Unfortunately, I sold all my comics to fund a house move, which I regret. I remember a special issue with a glow in the dark cover. I have watched the first episode of Sandman on Netflix and will watch more tonight. I hope it does justice to the comic. Alan Moore always said comics and film are different mediums. He took no royalties from the films and gave them away. That is extreme, but he is the creator, so up to him. But after Watchmen and Dark Knight Returns, Sandman was the biggest seller. I hope it all goes well.

All changes were either to edit out DC characters they didn't have the rights to, to make it more suitable for the screen, but mostly to EXPAND the storyline and add to the impact. This is the MOST true to the comic adaptation that has EVER been made, and trying to pretend otherwise is frankly doing a huge disservice to the industry and the fans.

I haven't read the comics, yet, but as a stand alone story I'm all in. The entire underlying concept is fantastic and it borrows from so many myths, legends and theological concepts, to form this surprisingly deep `examination` if you will, into human nature or perhaps the `human condition.` I was particularly intrigued with Desire and Despair being what appears to be a play off of Buddhist theology. "desire and ignorance lie at the root of suffering." While suffering and despair are not exact synonyms, it's pretty close.That they are twins, is brilliant. Indicating they came into being at the same time. One, lying at the root of the other. I look forward to more seasons and I think I'll read the comics up to where this season ends so as not to spoil any future seasons of the Netflix series. It's also encouraging that this is all based on comics because even if Netflix cancels this, I can still read the story.

Sandman is supposed to be stronger than Death. The dream is supposed to be the most important aspect of life even if humans don't understand its importance. In the comic, the character takes B.S. from no one and he is wiser and smarter than everyone. In the adaptation, his crow is giving him advice which Morfeas takes and also denies his orders straight up. Constantine also defies him and sends the demon back to hell and Lusen is giving him the looks. They cut off the scene where he gets violent to the demon at the doors of hell, and the way he dismisses the -living in the dream ghost husband - without a fuck about anything. and so many more little things that build the character. In the books he is the most powerful arrogant prick there is focused only on him and his functions and now he is someone who needs a crow to saw him the way. It's a ridiculous adaptation storywise. The very good frame-by-frame pictures are not saving the story gaps. Disappointment.

@@dimitrisbababa Sandman was never stronger than death, and he certainly isn’t wise or smart in the comic. He’s vulnerable and frequently doesn’t fully understand what is going on. "'They fear the sunless lands, yet they enter your realm every night without fear- And yet I am far more terrible than you. " About the "wiser" ok that was wrong . He is more like an arrogant prick that takes no shit. About the '" frequently doesn’t fully understand what is going on that is mentioned in the other comment by steve zara, the first time Morpheus says " I'm not sure what is happening: is when Rozi's grandmother appears and says that she is the vortex, Anyway my point is that the characters ark in the first book is from an arrogant know-all distant prick king to a more gentle hero..Just a bit. He gets to be more human later on in the books. In the series that arche is broken cause the hero doesn't start as a distant powerful arrogant prick to become a gentle caring hero. In the books, he doesn't use the dragon thing to take power but a paper- a contract or something. In the series, he takes the energy from the dragon just to give it back a few scenes later. In the books when the demon at the door of hell is giving him shit he grabs him by the face and sends him rolling to a wall ,that's cut off in the series. In the books, he sent the husband's ghost back to the dead ignoring in total the tears of the wife and her pain, in the series, the scene is underplayed although that move will cost him a later...don't want to spoil what will happen cause of that scene and the baby. He is not gentle at all at first and so when by the end of the book he is a bit more human we have o good heroes ark. In the series, we start with a dude that cares for Lucien, the nightmare, the dragon, takes advice from his crow and all that and we end up hearing from filchers green that he changed to a more gentle king. .. Show don't tell....The arche of the character is broken, Hope my point is understood.

I'm bothered by a very intentional softening of the way much of the imprisonment in Sandman is shown. The specificity of the obvious references to drug addiction ruining a person and their life, as well as some of the more fantastic magic immagery is left out of the Constantine episode, and I'm sad about it. I think the extended fantasy exploration of what drug use has to do with the need for dreams and detachment from reality and the honest look at the havoc drugs can reek is really in need of the humane but unflinching look it gets in the comic book, so I wish the series had preserved more of that. It's part of a larger trend of a certain gritty representation being softened and removed. One of the visual themes in the comic book is seeing character after character emaciated and imprisoned in squalor by truly malicious people. Rachel (or the Constantine story), Jed, Calliope and Lita Hall (from the Hector and Lita Hall story) are all imprisoned or self-imprisoned in this way and all but Calliope are literally fleeing these destroyed real lives for better ones in their sleeping dreams. I think this emphasis on the contrast between the rand dreams of power and freedom people escape into and the daily neglect and abuse they may never escape as they dream is a dose of reality which is a shame to lose in The Sandman. Regardless of where they go with Lita and Rose Walker, I do kinda wish we'd met her like in the comics and that she'd woken up in the impoverished and forgotten state she did in the comics. In the comics, she is a bored housewife being kept by Hector in his world and only barely suspects something mst be off. The comment on the suburban American dream there is something I missed seeing explored in the show.

Also Unity. Rich black family in ww1? Was britain already that progressive during that time?

Actually just there would have still been free black people able to walk around in and out anywhere.

What gets me is that almost every character is gay! Is it like that in the comics? Show is ok but probably won’t watch a season 2

to be honest there's was no need to swap sex o race to some of the main characters, unfortunately that's what we have swallow this days and it's very irritating

Did it detract from the characters, change their motives, wants, story arc? Genuinely curious, have you seen the new predator flick, "prey"? If so, were you one of the folk that preferred the original predator from the 80s, to the reboot because of the female lead?
@tempest-5232 жыл бұрын
@@eansba88- Yes gender and race swapping is a distraction. Lore is important. People get emotionally invested into characters and the development they enjoyed throughout the story line. Changing anything in that lore, whether it be race, gender, ability's, personality, whatever is a distraction and lazy writing. Shows the writers inability to incorporate an interesting character into the story that is X demographic. Prey wasn't bad because it had a female lead... it was bad because the writers were bad. They wrote their own problem, let me explain. She had to have this big kill to be praised and accepted as a hunter by the tribe. But they couldn't let her just kill the lion or bear because they had to have the build up to fight the Predator. So they have her failing time and time again at killing stuff just to get her to the Predator fight... but by doing so they made it that much more unbelievable that she could have killed the Predator who is way more dangerous and intelligent. Finally, as part of the piss poor writing, she goes from getting her butt kicked by two of her tribesmen to the very end where she magically got these Jason Bourne skills and is slaughtering dude after dude in the hunters camp. No where in the buildup in the story line did she develop this skill set to show character development. The only really good thing I praised in the movie is they didn't bite off the mud scene, it looked like they were, but she wound up using the flower petals which they foreshadowed throughout the movie... very good, they tricked me with her getting the mud thinking they were going to crap the bed and steal from the original to turn it around and surprise me... I liked that.

Yes, it is a problem. Not only by what the other user said wonderfully, but because its becoming more and more common. They are forcing an agenda of divercity that at this point looks more like racism and a fuck you to straight people.

@@eansba88- Yes it did. At least for a fan like me. There were reasons, details and all the little flavors as to why a character look and act as he/she does. For example in the comics, Death was Dream's older sister yet visually looked and acted very young, was very cheerful yet looked looked like a pale goth, etc. There were many details like that. And nothing like that in the series, she was played by an older afro-american actress and none of those subtleties were included. One may say she was even the opposite of that. She was also based on the model, a friend of both Neil and comic artist, who was killed, and it feels a bit wrong to just scrap her. Just like Lucifer was based on David Bowie and now is different... And for me it's not about gender or race, it is about change - I was as mad as they changed Lucifer in the previous netflix series from light skinned, light-eyed blonde to dark-haired, brown-eyed man. It is unnecessary and unrespectful.

@@S.... The entire point of the series was that who we are on the inside matters more than who we are on the outside. You just missed the point. Possibly by choice.

I watched the series and it's pretty good. But after you think about it a bit afterwards it's pretty crazy how many fatal, easy to exploit weaknesses lord of dreams has. He can be summoned and trapped relatively easily, he is pretty inept without his tools that can be stolen. He can't even easily find those tools :D:D
@S....2 жыл бұрын
There is a reason why he was captured so easily in the first place - he spend a massive amount of power rebooting the universe, after he fucked up and everyone went mad and started killing each other. And as for other weaknesses - it's the netflix series that made him so dumb and pathetic, things were different in original works and made more sense.

Constantine was HORRIBLY cast. Lucifer is not an endless so his form is not perception based, he should have been a dude, the actress is AMAZING but not who should have played lucifer. Almost everything else was fantastic!
@elliotphillips76362 жыл бұрын
While you are correct that Lucifer is not perception based, that doesn’t mean he should be a dude. In the original books/comics, Lucifer is androgynous in that they weren’t male or female so casting either was technically an inaccurate choice. But like you said, Gwendoline was amazing so I don’t think there’s much reason for complaint here
@vexusxenos41882 жыл бұрын
@@elliotphillips7636 in the comics they self identify as male and are referred to by every other character as "he/him/his/son" The art used for his character and his character in general was inspired by David Bowie, who was extremely genderfluid true, but they are very clearly male in the Endless comics. The Gender fluidity was a change NG made when writing his version of Lucifer, as in DC comics this Gender fluidity does not exist, he is very clearly male and male identifying. Like I said I think she is an amazing actress, but I definitely don't think she should have been cast as Lucifer, we have yet to get a comics accurate on screen appearance of Lucifer, Tom Ellis was amazing to but he wasn't even close to Lucifer from DC comics.

So what you get to see here from the comics, the Netflix adaptation seems pretty tame in comparison. Oh, and why does he only use that weird helmet once in the series? (Would it be too easy to find certain people otherwise?).
@songsayswhat2 жыл бұрын
I don't remember him using the helmet much in the comics, but it's been years since I read them. I may not remember correctly. I want to say he saw the error he made by investing so much of his power into objects. I don't remember him using them much as the series went on.

i think in the comics he absorbs his tools because like lucifer said, relying on tools is a trap.
