Just saw the movie and can easily say this was the best Godzilla film by far. One issue that the movie fixes which has been a problem in the franchise for quite sometime now is that it actually blends good monster action with human characters that are not just likeable but characters we care about. I think this will end up as the best Godzilla film. The one from 1954 is probably the 2nd GOAT. I try getting into Godzilla movies but I never could. He always had me intrigued as a kid. But a lot of his movies are similar to Bond movies. They don't really click with me. It's very niche and I guess I'm not into kaiju. I was thinking about getting this Godzilla Hiya toy that's like $50. It's a revision of the GvK one from 2021 but they corrected his neck. But a part of me really doesn't like the Legendary design. I keep waiting for it to grow on me and it never does. And I recently rewatched Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) and it's not a good movie at all as Chris from Film Stocked has said. The story and logic are stupid which is how a lot of Godzilla movies are. Many kung fu films are the same way. The first Godzilla I've ever seen was King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962) back when I was 7 in '87-88. I'll probably save the $50 and wait for Hiya to make one for Minus One. I prefer his head more and his largest dorsal plates looks like shurikens. I do not mind his size being smaller. Minus One is closer to the size of the 1954 one at around 164 feet (50 meters) or so. While Legendary is closer to 400 feet, the largest Godzilla at the time of release in 2014 before Shin Godzilla. I prefer Godzilla to be slimmer and the shape of the head to be rounder. I don't like Legendary Godzilla's roar. It's not as iconic as Toho's. It loses that punch. I already lost interest in finishing Monarch. Like should I really care about these human characters? I only care to watch Godzilla destroy shit or other titans. I don't really watch it for emo people with broken lives. But I hear Minus One has human characters I'll care about. I don't like how Legendary designed Kong. He's too brown when I want him black like Mighty Joe Young. I want the Peter Jackson Kong or the one from 1976. The Legendary designs are questionable for me. Some like it but it's not for me. Legendary design is still way better than Godzilla 1998 but I feel it could still be much better. Godzilla Minus One is really a modern remake of the 1954 film. It's paying more homage to that film from 69 years ago. Going back to the roots but with a modern look and not some guy in a rubber suit. I doubt Minus One will ever get me into Godzilla or anything kaiju but at least when I see it, what I'm watching is a good film. Ranking all the Godzilla films I've seen - 1. Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) 2. Godzilla (2014) 3. Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) 4. King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962) 5. Godzilla (1998) Never seen all of Godzilla 1954 but it seems like a classic film. GvK is not as good as Godzilla 2014 but I prefer it more because I'm also a fan of King Kong and Mechagodzilla. People say the 2014 film is the best American Godzilla film and I wouldn't argue with that. And I was initially disappointed by it but came to like it more after a couple more rewatches at home. Minus One should easily be my #1 after I see it. The bar for Godzilla / kaiju niche films isn't very high. Most Godzilla films are basically 80% following human characters, hilarious English dubbing on Japanese actors, and then watching actors in rubber suits fighting or stomping on miniature sets. They're generally disaster films. That's the gist of Godzilla films. That and Godzilla helps sells toys for boys like Hello Kitty does for girls.

It's 5 out 10 max. If people were being honest instead of trying to be trendy everybody would be talking about how ridiculous it is nobody is speaking American. I'm not sure if this was made in foreign to save money or the film makers jumped on the same train as Netflix and tried to make it 'cool' and different by making it foreign. To me I found it very distracting and made it very hard to follow, I've got no idea if Godzilla time traveled, if he was angry because everybody was chatting gibber gabber, or how this fits in with the other movies in the franchise. I also think is a bit cheap to show the orange monkey in ALL the trailers only to find out the orange monkey isn't even in this one! I just don't get it!

"Why is he bein' so shitty?"... this is a SPOILERY answer, so look away if you have not seen the movie: When we first see him in his original form on the island, he's being animal/territorial... but when the 'rex' version is irradiated by the US nuke test at Bikini Atoll, that's when he really starts growing, mutating, and getting really pissed off. I thought that his "scales" actually looked more like volcanic lava, particularly when he would regenerate. He's probably in constant pain, melting from the inside from all that nuclear energy while his body boils, regenerates, and mutates around that energy.. and is PISSED at the humans who did this to him. Also, I recently learned the movie title "Minus One" is because the filmmakers said that Japan is already "at zero" after WWII and the arrival of Godzilla takes them to "minus one". Amazing film!!

I was pleasantly surprised to see the theater was about 75% full during my showing. The Godzilla fandom isn’t the most vocal bunch compared to the fandoms of other franchises but there’s a lot of us out there and I think that’s great.

It’s interesting this came out the same year as Oppenheimer, which did not depict the destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki or anything from the Japan perspective. This film actually depicts that kind of destruction, even in a monster movie setting.

This movie was refreshing precisely because it didn’t spend time on any of the mythology like so many other movies do these days. It’s about the characters and a lot of the tension comes from them not knowing WTF Godzilla is.

It's already been established in most films that godzilla is an allegory for humans curiosity of playing god. Even in the 1954 film he didn't have a reason to attack why would he's a force of nature in this narrative that's paying homage to original film while telling a different story and keeping some core elements of Godzilla.

Correct - of the 38 Godzilla movies, there are 12 distinct, separate continuities/reboots. Most of these reboots shoo everything except the very first 1954 Godzilla film away, though some (like this one, Shin, GMK and the American reboots) reboot completely leaving even the '54 version out.

Godzilla being an outright force of evil is something I don't think most of us outside of Japan are quite able to grasp. And there is a reason for that because Japan went through a lot and those experiences informed the creation of the character. The international image of the character is so at odds with what the character fundamentally is. and says a lot about why Hollywood will forever struggle with getting it right.

The only time he was really "good" were those awful Showa era movies made for children, have a couple of kennys, does things like dance and fly from the 70s. that scene that pans up behind Godzilla toward the top of the atom bomb cloud was almost haunting - as if he just summoned satan and then began worshipping it with his scream. it was an absolutely unnecessary taunt to show anyone who survived what he just did - and that famous japanese scream we see in so many japanese actors came out full force when shikishima realizes he just lost his wife and city. it was beautifully shot tbh, and the biggest slap in the face you could give someone trying to get his life back together.

I watched this last night in a packed theater. The audience loved it and clapped at the end This movie was amazing. I loved how it explored post war Japan. I’m a life long Godzilla fan and this was the first time I was genuinely scared of Godzilla. The movie made you care about the human characters and you don’t want to see them die. This in many ways sets out a new standard for Kaiju flicks This is easily the most vicious Godzilla yet. This movie really makes you feel absolutely powerless when Godzilla shows up. That nuke really pissed him. He’s the horror of war incarcerate. Nothing but a Monster. This will easily go down as one of the best Godzilla movies yet

To point out why Godzilla is angry is because he was hit with an atomic bomb. That's usually been Godzilla big beff with humans in the ToHo movies. With this version it's the same thing plus just leave him alone. He don't wanna hear no noise, he doesn't want to see no people. 18:03 no Martin the Godzilla from the Monsterverse is not the same Godzilla we see in this movie. The Monsterverse established that he was found in 1954. Minus one Goji attacked Japan in 1947 And monarch was never a thing in this movie. Toho likes to reboot Godzilla a lot. 1984 to 1995 Heisei era 2000 millennium Godzilla vs Megagirus Gmk Kiryu saga Final wars Shin Godzilla All reboots with little to no connection to any movie aside from the original 1954 movie or flat out ignored in general. Shin Godzilla and minus one goes for the ignoring 1954 movie and starting fresh. 22:30 that was intentional. Takashi Yamazaki (the director) intentionally gave us a jaws moment but with Godzilla. 31:25 yes it's CGI

Almost none of what you list is "rebooted'. Most of them are ALL sequels to the original 54 movie but few of them are direct sequels to each other. Godzilla 1984 is a direct sequel to 54, Biolante is a direct sequel to 84. 2000 is a sequel to 54, GxMG and Tokyo SOS are direct sequels. People seem to have trouble with "cannon" ALL of them except for Shin Godzilla are direct sequels to the 54 film, very few of them are sequels to each other. They're mostly treated as stand alone films but tied to the 54 film.

31:05 I think what they were conveying or at least trying to is the realism of him walking through water and the water creating drag on his movements. So in that scene for me it makes sense that he would be moving like that coming out of water compared to land.

This was the first time I ever watched a Godzilla movie and found myself rooting for the humans. They made him a literal monster in this.. and it was GREAT. He's just angry and aggressive. The original is still the best Godzilla movie in my opinion.. but this movie is a very close second! Better than Shin-Godzilla.. Better than GMK.. Better than any of the Monsterverse movies. I would love for them to continue this universe.. and keep them period pieces set in the past. Work their way up to present day.. and, of course, add in their other Kaiju along the way.

The reason Godzilla is so aggressive is because he's smaller than before. When he was huge, humans were ants. No one likes an ant infestation but we will clean it out impersonally without much thought. Now that he's smaller, we're more like rats to him and we all know how we would feel about a rat infestation in our house.

I saw it in DTLA tonight after LA Comic Con in a 4DX theater- quite literally a roller coaster ride! The seats moving along with the boats in the rough seas and vibrating with the explosions took it to the next level. My mom survived the WWII bombardment in Japan so that aspect hit pretty hard.

George Takei ( the guy who played Sulu on the original Star Trek series )was in the Japanese internment camps as a child during the war,here in america. Heard him say in an interview he felt betrayed by the US for this treatment of it's Japanese citizens. The US also had these camps for Italians too.

Really wish Korey would redo this review with Martin and maybe even everyone else just so they could all talk about it in length and not tip-toe around spoilers. Fantastic Godzilla though, probably the best one I’ve seen. The human characters weren’t just background for Godzilla. I was caught off guard by how much cared for them. When you first see Godzilla you realize it’s young and it looks like a dinosaur because it happens on a random island but then when you see him attack Ginza or even the ships on the water you are so excited to see what he’s become. The VFX on Godzilla is shockingly good. I think when Korey mentioned that he looked robotic was I think the studio trying to emphasize that Godzilla is a force of destruction and doesn’t need to nimble all the time when just walking around. It definitely seems more nimble when he is attacking anything. Best movie I’ve seen this year; I will definitely see it a few more times too.

It was pretty predictable, but the actors really put their heart into it. The performances caused me to tear up a couple times. I think overall I preferred Shin Godzilla, but this was pretty great for what it was. I'm sure there was a lot of CG, but everything felt like it was practical.

It's not only the best Godzilla I've ever see, it is honestly one of the best films ever made to me. I can't recall a film in recent history where I cared for the characters this much. I pretty much loved every featured character in it, and was praying they wouldn't die. What a masterpiece. A big monster movie that is also genuinely one of the greatest human dramas. Absolutely astounding.

Minus One not only takes elements of some of the best Godzilla films (54, 84, 2000, GMK, Shin) but even resurrects overlooked, promising aspects brought up in other films in the franchise (Godzilla Raids Again, Vs King Ghidorah) and not only improves on them but even SHOWS us things that were only ever implied or just explained through exposition in the past. Heck it even one-ups the Jurassic Park movies of recent years at one point and it took me by surprise how well done it was. The human characters are shockingly good too, probably the best ones we’ve had in a very long time, and setting it in the 40s post-WW2 worked to their benefit, and I liked how it brought attention to a lot of the guys that were chewed up and spat out by the Japanese war machine (the allegory works very well due to being nuanced and the movie does not feel like a petulant lecture because of it). I hope Yamazaki gets his wish and we get another film from him, preferably a sequel because Minus One deserves it, and I’m tired of Toho doing just one-offs like they have done these past 10 years.

31:14 I’ve heard a few commentators talk about Godzilla’s walk looking funny in this movie and the director said something (I can’t remember where) that might explain that: we all know Godzilla is a metaphor for atomic destruction but in this movie, he’s also a metaphor of the soldiers that fought in that time. That stiff posture with his arms locked at his sides. We’ve seen that posture before when survivors walk away from an explosion completely shell-shocked. Godzilla has that same zombie-like gait. I might be reaching but it’s an interesting take that he’s embodying both aspects of the WWII soldier: the aggressor and the survivor.

It will never not be hilarious when people act like its all the Legendary movies do, but the "Toho" movies don't...The Toho movies are mostly 80 minutes human drama, 5 minutes Godzilla travelling, 5-10 minute Monster fight.

These Best Godzilla Film ever made. AND… They made his Atomic Breath actually ATOMIC!!! Best Human Element but then again Japanese usually have better Human Elements than the American versions. This and Shin had great Human Elements. Also I love the way he walks in this film. He’s literally One Step and a Time. Usually he kind of walks like a Human or a steady pace. Here he Steps, then Stops, then Steps again. Very different I just needed to point that out after 33 Films in ToHo’s library!

They basically just gave Godzilla the temperament of a slasher villain and I love it. Normally, Godzilla is generally reactionary. If things attack him he attacks back, and he knocks over buildings either by accident, during a fight, or because something pissed him off. This Godzilla woke up and said "I'm gonna murder the very next thing I see and just keep going from there" and proceeded to do exactly that before humanity even touched him. All the nuke did was worsen his anger problem, make him bigger, and give him superpowers.

I’ve been a Godzilla fan for 40 years and this was the first time I had ever gotten to see a Japanese TOHO made Godzilla movie in the theaters. I think it’s only the third one in my lifetime that has been shown in America and I was born in 1980. I don’t know if it’s my favorite Godzilla movie I have to sit with it for a while because I have some nostalgia for some of the classics but this one hands-down is by far the best Godzilla movie ever made. It is the first Godzilla movie to actually make me care about the human characters and their storyline. 30 minutes into the movie I was so into the characters in this movie I forgot it was a Godzilla movie and I just wanted them to make it. That’s the other thing that’s weird I love the monster versus movies with Godzilla and King Kong but those movies are fun popcorn, movies, and when the monsters aren’t on screen, you really don’t give a shit about any of the characters. So you want the monsters on screen all the time in the monsters. I love those movies, but this is the first Godzilla movie that figured out how to make just a great movie And a great Godzilla movie at the same time. When Godzilla wasn’t on screen, I was very into the human characters.

To be honest, first of all, this Godzilla has a particularly strong Japanese flavor. So I was worried whether my brothers overseas would understand me deeply. It is said that the Shinden that fought Godzilla was a romantic piece created solely to defeat the B29, said to be the devil who launched air strikes on Tokyo and the metropolitan area and dropped the atomic bomb, and that after Godzilla's atomic breast attack in Ginza. The horror of the black rain, etc. However, as a Japanese Godzilla fan, I would be happy if even a little bit of what the first generation wanted to convey across countries and eras was conveyed and people enjoyed it.
