Doubling the Warp Threads for Weaving Cotton Dish Towels

I am really excited to see the doubled warp threads! I'm a new weaver (just assembled my rigid heddle loom last week!), so I really appreciate the closeup views of your threading process. It took me a few tries to understand why there were 4 threads in the slot, but I get it now!

Thank you 🥰 I believe that with 8/2 cotton, only 1 loop in a 12.5 dpi would make the towels a bit too thin to my taste. When I use a 15dpi heddle, I do pull only one loop. But this is really the thinnest I go!

Great idea for those of us not ready for complicated pick up patterns but yet crave practical dishtowels. I wonder how you attach and weight your pole on the step ladder?? I didn't understand that and am always looking for better ways

Hi, Mylena! I've enjoyed your channel so much and I really appreciate your videos. Thank you for putting this content out on KZbin and encouraging people to learn to weave. I have a 32" Ashford RHL because of your channel! I dressed my loom this weekend to weave cotton dishtowels exactly as you are doing here: Brassard 8/2 cotton with double threads on a 10 dent heddle (400 ends). I ran into some issues. Two questions for you: 1) I used a horizontal bar like you do to direct warp. This time, some of the warp threads became more uneven when I pulled them off the horizontal bar, making the warp threads next to them longer or shorter because it was all one big length of yarn! One warp thread is nearly 6" shorter than the others. How do you keep them even? Tape on the back apron? 2) I had a terrible time with the threads getting tangled as I tried to roll the warp onto the back beam. It was tangled rats nest and doubled the time needed to load the back beam. Some of the threads were so twisted they pulled up onto the yarn, making them even shorter! Have you had this problem? Are twisted strands just part of the challenge of weaving? I pulled the yarn off the spools as they were standing upright. It's just one color that did this, so perhaps it was just that spool? Hello! I’m so sorry that you had such a bad experience warping your loom! I hope you could still enjoy the weaving of those dishtowels. I’ll try to help you to the best of my knowledge. I have experienced both of your problems before and I’m going to give you a few things that I do to help me with those problems. Still, with many things with weaving, I don’t have a magic formula, but some tips to help ease the process. For both your situations, I find that it helps to tie the warp at many places while it’s still on the warping rod. Especially, I now tie it at two places really close to the bar. I didn’t show it in this video, but I’ll try to show it in a next video. The way I understand the problem of having threads longer than others is that when we direct warp, we actually have a continuous thread that travels around the back apron and around the peg. This means that the warp is not fixed to and it can move. It’s like having a long tread making many loops around two poles. If at some point during the warping process we pull on one thread, then this thread will become longer while the thread next to it would become smaller. This can happen when we pull the project of out the rod or when we start to roll the project to the back of the beam. Especially if the threads are tangled and we pull on them while trying to fix the mess. I find it can also happen when I’m cutting the loops to start the threading. Something I do it carelessly and I cut some loops not in the middle so that one thread is much longer than the one right next to it. Also, I always assumed that tangled threads were one of the burdens of the weaver and I accepted it was part of the process. Still, if I feel like my warp would tangle a lot, I try to tie it on more places before taking it out of the rod. I also try not to move it too much. Writing this, I feel link there might be other solutions that I just haven’t looked into. I’m going to think about this and do some research and hopefully find more tips to help! I’ll make sure to share my findings later!

@@Curly_n_Yarny Thanks so much for these ideas! Its a relief to know others battle tangled threads. In the future I'll tie sections of the warp together before I pull it off the peg. Just in case others run into this issue, I found the best solution was to sit back and think of ways I could fix this messy warp. I ended up breaking all kinds of rules and it worked out just fine. Once I threaded the reed and tied onto the front beam, I slowly and carefully advanced the warp all the way onto the front beam to force the tangles to show up at the end of the warp using the reed to help separate the threads. Then I cut the warp off the back beam! (GASP!) Because all the tangles were now at the end of the warp, I was able to comb them all out and then lash on to the back beam again the same way I lashed on to the front beam. I made sure the tension was good, then advanced the warp onto the back beam again. The warp is smooooooth and silky now. This was a good lesson to take my time. The steps at the beginning are just as important as the actual weaving. This is going to be fun now! Thanks for being a great teacher, Mylena! Looking forward to your next video.

Thank you 😊 My spool holder is actually a DIY project I did with my father-in-law. It was originally a wall-mounted coat rack that I found for 1$ at a flee market. The hooks had little "head" that got in the way of the spools. So we cut them off 🙂

Hi out of interest what width is that loom. I have just purchased a 20" Louet Erica and am thinking of getting a wide loom for larger projects. Am thinking 32", do you think that would be wide enough or go for the 48"...but what are your thoughts would I need boat shuttles for 48" ? Also what dent are you using on this project please. My loom is 32" wide and I love it. Choosing between the 32" and the 48" would depend on what kind of larger projects you wish to make. Personally, the 32" is enough for what I wish to make. When I want to have a project larger then that, I can do double weave or make pannels and sew them together. I have never used a boat shuttle with my rigid heddle loom. I always use my stick shuttles. I guess I'm just used to it. Depending on the space that you have, it might indeed be interesting to use boat shuttles instead of super long stick shuttles. For this project, I'm using my 10 DPI heddle. I have doubled the warp threads which means that I have 20 ends per inch. I hope this helps 😊

Yes, I put the ladder a the distance that equals to the length that I want my towels to be PLUS the length that I consider for scrap yarn. The scrap yarn is usually around 50cm (20") for me. Here's a video in which I explain how I place my step ladder: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aWTEin1vj5h9pdU

Hi Just wondering……. you have used 8/2 cotton doubled on a 12.5 heddle. Would you get the same result using 8/4 cotton on a 12.5 ? Is there a reason why people always seem to use 8/2 rather than 8/4? Thank you as always.

Hi! It will not be exactly the same, but I must agree, it will not me that different. The biggest different for me will come to the weft yarn that you will use. If you were to use to the same 8/4 yarb in the weft, then the towel would be thicker. Personally, one of the reason why I like to use 8/2 cotton is that I like the combination of it doubled in the warp and single in the weft. Also, when I buy yarn, I don't always have a project in mind and I don't really use 8/4 cotton on my multi-shaft looms. By buying 8/2 cotton, I have the flexibility of using my yarn on all my loom if needed. But I feel like other weavers might have other reasons why they preferer using 8/2 cotton 😅 I feel like the best way to figure it out what a weaver prefers would be to try both and see what they like best 😊
