The older one is warmer sounding but I think they both sound great. I made a clone of the 1974 and stayed as true as humanly possible, it's great. The thing that really brought mine to life was a 1967 Greenback.

What struck me is how Pat can make any rig sound really good. I think this is true because he adjusts his playing to get a good sound or the sound he wants from different guitars and amps. Kinda like if Arnold Palmer was using my elcheapo clubs. He would kill it after the first few shots. Great vid. Marshall seems to have nailed it. Both guitars were amazing really. Oscar is in league of its own. Wow!!

The speaker in the original combo is sounding a little tired. Not much punch left to it. I'm assuming the paper cone is fatigued. They'd probably sound near identical with the same speaker, only real difference after that is a better transformer in the new one. It pains me to say it, but my preference is the reissue.

Well Marshall lied when they said both amps are identical because they are not. If you open up the new one and you know anything about amp circuitry then you will see that the amp has no choke. It uses a resistor in place of the choke. What this means is that in comparison the vintage 1974 is gonna breath much more and sound more lively, natural and have more personality. Once again Marshall has managed to find a way to save a buck and for the cost of the reissues that is pretty shitty. Good news is that you can get a choke from Mercury Magnetics. I went the extra mile and replaced all of the transformers and choke with clones of the originals and the difference is huge. Most will be happy with the reissue as is and never know if they have never heard a real vintage one in person. Anyways just a Lil piece of knowledge.. Rock brothers..
@shaktifan19778 жыл бұрын
+gtrmike There is no choke in the 18w circuit, neither in the originals or the reissues. I really don't understand what you're talking about here. There may be tiny circuit differences between the original and the reissue (the 18w weren't particularly consistent as far as parts and parts values anyway), but the difference has nothing to do with a choke or no choke.
@gtrmike8 жыл бұрын
+shaktifan1977 You may be right. I may be talking about Lead and Bass but I installed a choke in mine in place of the resistor between the filters. Amp sounds way better. Biggest deal with the original vs the reissue I gonna be the transformers and mustard caps.
@gtrmike8 жыл бұрын
+shaktifan1977 There has been some amps that Marshall has used resistors in place of chokes.
@ryan.13578 жыл бұрын
+gtrmike Hah, well I don't know anything about the electronics of an amplifier (well, very little) but that makes a lot of sense. It completely sounds like the older one is more natural sounding.
@voxpathfinder15r8 жыл бұрын
+gtrmike Chokes aren't always a good thing, with a choke you will have less sag, and many people think sag is an important component of that old tube sound.
@sangandongo11 жыл бұрын
I'm a fan of the older one's darker tone. It's more even keeled. The lack of high definition may also have something to do with the tubes or component values (older caps/resistors will have variance.) Also, the magnet/coil in the old greenback has had nearly 50 years of life...

speakers loosen up and get warmer sounding overtime. Much of that is due to the epoxy they use to attach the paper cone to the metal frame. I think the new marshall will sound better after 100 hours. With that being said, I don't think todays magnets are the same as vintage.

New one is more 3D and less focused, however not as warm. The original is warmer, has a bigger bottom end and much sweeter highs. If the construction is the same I always lean towards buying new, usually to me "vintage" means it will break sooner, that is if the construction is the same. In this case it is obvious that they are not built the same. Different wiring or at least materials have been used. The original kicks ass in the case and it is more than just the speaker.

i honestly think in a band setting the new one will sound better. it cuts way more than the old one. but stand alone the old one sounds better. but i have learned over the years that when you think you have your amp dialed in just right at your house then you take it to a jam or a gig, you have to boost the mid or highs just a little bit. the new 18w has more mids to my ears. idk, i might like it better, call me crazy.

There's so much people don't understand about valve amplifiers. One of them, is the effect that heat has on the circuit, capacitors in particular. The original values will be DIFFERENT on the 1968 original, and by no small margin - although they would have left the factory with the same specification. Add to this the fact that 60's components are less tolerant of heat than modern equivalents, and the difference is increased still further. The new one will sound more like the original one did back when it left the factory.

I like the sound of the old one better, but seems like the new one had better dynamics/touch sensitivity?
@DFraserHomes5 жыл бұрын
The older one has more compression coming from either the amp or speaker or both and compression is the enemy of dynamics. One could probably get more touch back (if one wanted to) with a different speaker, maybe rectifier tube? It would be a good position to be in to have the original and have those options. D&P
