That is a really nice amp. Would really like to see you get a bigger Marshall. Maybe a jtm45 or a jmp 50 or even a 100w. I have had a 50 and 100 both were very different animals. But i swear by them. I have down sized to a new marshall studio vintage 20w with the 2x12. It has the same DNA as the plexi with a fx loop. Love it. I bet you could get the sv212 for your 18w. Get a lil bit more out of it. Your sound is awesome with this amp. Can't wait to hear more out of the Marshall 🤘🤘 Funny thing is I'm looking to get a Fender Bandmaster lol but I'm in no hurry.

I'm sure you've figured it out by now, but that 20 watt Greenback is only about 96db sensitivity. Put in a more efficient speaker like a G12H Anniversary, Vintage 30, G12H-75 Creamback, Lead 80 etc and that amp would be a fair bit louder. Sounds great.

Wow, the Strat is so bright and crisp but still vintage. Being a Gibson Les Paul guy turned Strat guy, I expected the Firebird to sound the way it did. The Strat however turned a new page. Still love your Fender amp tones, but this has it's own sound. Blew me away Matt!! Great discovery, and keeping it fresh!

in my old playing days, My Dual-Reverb blew up one night and a buddy let me run my Strat through his little 100w Valve-state combo for the night. The next day I bought one and played through it on stage for 25 years. Surprised me for sure but the Marshall sound was next level, at least for me. Thx for the vid!

bro that is the amp i have been loving for so many years. nothing ever comes close to the 1974x. welcome to the club :) here is the secret trick to get channel 1 for cheap: there are "harley storm" and "golden ton" amps called "smart 20" around on the (european) used market. they are handwired, made in china copies of channel 1 of the 1974x. they sound amazing. it is really exactly the same thing (i have an original and a harley storm copy). bought the harley storm new for 90euros from a spanish reverb seller. these amps were sold at german/french/spanish discounter supermarkets in the early 2000s. there is also a "smart 10" which is a very nice champ clone and a "smart 30" which is whatever (vox?). good luck finding them, they are the best value ever.

Love your vids. I was building an 18W 1974 1x12 combo style amp and kept upping it and upping it and I ended up doing a 50W JTM50 2x12 combo style amp. Along the way I was talking with Jim at Scumback Speakers and ended up with 1 M75-PVC and 1 J75. The M75 is like a Greenback (I got his 65W version) and the J75 (also the 65W version) has a bit heavier magnet (40oz instead of the Greenback's 35oz) and is between a Greenback and an H30 tonally. Jim suggested this pairing because it's an open-back combo and the J75 supports the bottom end that the Greenback can lack outside of a closed-back 4x12 cab. Anyway, back to the amp- the JTM50 is the amp that was Marshall's transition between the JTM45 and the first JMP amps (Super Leads, Super Basses, etc.). It still has tube rectification, but went to 2 EL34s instead of the JTM45's 2 KT66s. I don't think you could go wrong with any of those amps, but while the JTM45 is 30W, the rest are between 50W and 100W, depending on which one you get. Thanks for making these vids... keep it up!

I'm the old guy i would imagine here at 64, i own 2 Marshall JCM 800's from 1984. Been through hell and back over the years. Never modded em and a couple of original tube changes over the last 25 years. I have other cool heads ive bought over the years but Marshall for me is a standard!

The 18 watters have a cult following. The topography is that the circuit is very simple and on the order of a tweed deluxe but with el-84's......A simple single section pre-amp with volume & tone and a phase inverter though its not a cathodyne phase inverter but the later long tail pair. BUT as a simple amp circuit, it could be built both ways with the inherent differences. The Long Tail pair has its own gain characteristic and the old style cathodyne phase inverter has a gain stage in front of it that does its own thing as the signal thats hitting it goes up.......essentially the how far you turn up the single volume pot as that just controls the pre-amp tube section......as the PI gain stage will probably start to overdrive and compress faster than the pre-amp section itself since the signal is being increase in the pre-amp stage though really relevant to how that first pre-amp stage is biased. I have built these as clones before for clients, and there need to be a right balance so there is a good swing with the volume pot......as if its pre-amp is biased too hot then the volume swing and range is a very small window for variations. AS far as el-84 tubes go......they would normally tend to be a brighty harsh type response BUT in this circuit, they tend to be tamed down and sound good and full and not bright at all. They do have their own breakup & saturation thing to them which can be juicy. I do set the power tubes up to be cathode biased and the voltages have to be correct for the tube operation......so combined with a very efficient speaker can sound quite loud as there is also the psychological effect because of the distortion character when its up in the zone. BUT you also need to consider these are el-84 tubes and they run about $10 each for replacements or slightly more......kind of a disposable tube for the cost that you can beat the hell out of. The feedback loop in the amp will also influence the rawness of the response or if its tamed down......and the over all loudness. BUT the amp design is not limited to just 2 el-84 power tubes as an 18 watter........there can be the 36 watt version with 4 power tubes...4 el-84's. Should you need more actual power to compete with a 40/50 watt big power tube amp such as a super reverb or tweed bassman type. Obviously its an amp that would be better as a head unit as not to be limited to a single speaker and cabinet situation......so with a head you will have more potential for variation. The 18 watter cult tend to use a Hammond organ reverb module to convert to an amplifier being the chassis and the donor transformers for the platform. But personally I think the chassis is too small as it could use more room for all the circuitry. So if I were to get a commission to build one, I would start with all new transformers and chassis of a size that is more friendly and with more room for the guts. BUT in the world of building custom amplifiers, you are not limited to a clone situation......you can build anything by thinking outside the box......provided you know what you are doing. A mini-tweedesque Bassman could be created with el-84 tubes or 6V6's so you could really dial it up and lean into it without the big power tube loudness. AS for my work, I hope to have sound clips created soon and posted up for demo's......perhaps on here and elsewhere

I find it hard to believe that this amp is too quiet. A 10 watt amp is only half as loud as a 100 watt amp. So unless you are cranking your 100 watt amps, this amp is probably still crazy loud. Edit: According to one internet user, they measured the decibels from this amp between 110 and 115 db for most their playing. Decide for yourself if that is loud.

Moset 100 watt Marshall players don't need them for more volume, they need the 100 watts for more clean headroom and with that more clarity when its cranked. I think!

@@rottalmusik6563 that's right more watt means the more clean headroom before the amp breaks up. Ultimately you will get more volume as it will only get saturated when you really dime them. That's the beauty of tube amps you can pick the right amp based on wattage. I wouldn't personally go more than 15 for home use but for a pedal platform to gig 15 isn't clean long enough to get over drums

​@@johnmarshall3903 Don't get me wrong, everything about the Mesa is fantastic especially the road worthiness and build quality - second to none. But, I think it comes down to the simplicity of the old amp designs. When anyone tries to "improve" on them, there is invariably something left out of the basic raw sound quality. Definitely the case with the Mesa though it may also be due having a single speaker vs 2 or 4 which will shift the air in a different way. I also have an early 60's AC30 which sounds fantastic in a different way.

Old video is old but I picked one of these recently in trade and was pleasantly surprised. I find it quite usable tbh. Its old school so you dime the amp and surf your vol and tone controls on the guitar to clean up. I really like the papery dynamic range of the 25w greenback but if you wanted to tighten it up a bit the 65w creamback does the job perfectly. I love these old school amps - its what I grew up using - and not needing a massive pedal board etc. There is no substitute for amp overdrive and I really appreciate the minimalism of these combos. Granted this isn't going to cut like a 100w twin in to two JBL's but I haven't been able to pick mine up for ~5 years now and the last time I tried to gig with it the sound guy beat me with his shoe.

Hi Mathew, Man just want say I'm not one for leaving comments as a rule... but i love/dig what you do. Your tone is fantastic.. what ever your playing or playing through it never fails because as we all know a high percentage of the tone comes from our fingers. I came across your channel last year and ive watched them all and some many times. And on finding the gea.. well you put the effort in for the most you will get the rewards and in your case that's seems to have paid off many times. It is obvious that you loved Stevie as we all did but even though you use similar gear and know the licks and tones you also have your 'own style' and tone which is great very refreshing. Ive been playing guitar since the late 70s but stopped playing live a good few years back due to hand issues so kept out of it for a while but your stuff seems to have resurrected the desire to play again. Only had one sniff of a Genuine 62 back in 1985 but i couldn't raise the cash at the time even though it was dirt cheap. Then the Uk got the gist of things vintage wise real quick and it was impossible to buy anything unless you were very wealthy and even then you could get ripped off by the greedy retailers who thought it was ok to charge the earth for everything and the fakes were everywhere and as you know knowledge is key. Keep doing what you do its awesome and its about time some of the big names gave you the heads up and maybe the chance to do something along side them for more exposure if that's something you would consider. I still have quite a few guitars and amps in storage im going to dig them out and dust them off. Peace (;

I have the 1973x which is the 2 x 12 version which obviously helps move more air, gives a bit more volume. In a band situ it couldn't cut through the mix even with a 'moderate' drummer until I played it through my 4 x 12, then it started to be heard. As a combo when turning up it didn't particular get any louder it just mushed out/compressed more. It is a toneful amp and best used for recording. In regards to my recommendation my favourite is a JTM45 ( with 4 x 12) running with a bit of break up and use pedals from there. It is a very loud if required, warm, round sound platform great with buckers or singles. Of course not so different to a Bassman and that it why I like those amps over other Fender amps.

I've always thought that your tone and playing is just impeccable! This particular amplifier though, it just seems like it doesn't have enough gas. I played through these hand-wired Marshalls and it's hard to get them to go into that natural harmonic feedback that we all love. The tone is still there for sure but I think that's mostly coming out of your hands dude!

3/2023: 3 years ago I sold a Marshall JCM-900 12x2 combo amp 100/50 watt that I bought new in 1994. I wish that I hadn't. I think that your Marshall sounds great with both guitars, and your playing. Best Regards

A friend of mine used to play gigs with one Super Reverb and an antique Marshall tube amp running together. He's a blues-rock telly guy but with humbuckers tho. That tone was absolutely astonishing. You should definitely try that, as you mentioned!

Hey man, good choice - had the 1974x and 2061x Stack. when you turn up the "Tone" knobs to around 8 and up, you should get an extra little hidden boost of gain. These amps can get really mean. And when you want the amp where it really shines, play this amp over a old Marshall 1960 Cabinet with G12M20 or M25. If you have any questions about Marshall amps, judt hit me up on IG. Rock on, man

That Firebird through that 1974x is absolutely killer. I love my Lester through my 1962hw, it’s so thick and chewy, but whoa! I love that firebird through the 74x also. Nice combo man. Sounding great btw.

Whoa... your Stratocaster sounds so damn good, it made the Firebird 1 sound almost a little sterile, and devoid of character. That strat is a good one man! I am in no way saying the firebird isn't a good guitar it's beautiful, but from 7:56- 9:34 I noticed the strat takes that birds ass pretty convincingly to me. And I am a Gibson guy! Go figure. Welcome to the Marshall sound, soon you may go for some vintage Marshall amps, watch Chard's videos and listen to the old speakers and amps, you get a pretty good tone out of that amp mic'd and use your volume control and attack to control dynamics, also record yourself to find the sweet spot
