Crisis Investing Q&A with Doug Casey: Visions, Investments, and The Future
In a comprehensive Q&A session, Doug Casey, associated with Crisis Investing, answers various questions from the members of The Phyle, a private community. He discusses his vision and experiences with Estancia de Cafayate, the concept of free cities, and reflections on investment and community living. Doug also tackles questions about the alignment of personal philosophy with business ethics, the importance of associating with ethically grounded individuals, and strategies for dealing with conflicts of interest in transactions. Furthermore, he addresses the measurement of economic growth beyond GDP, the impact of demographics on economies, artificial intelligence and the future of work, and the conceptualization of The File community for like-minded individuals. The dialogue also touches on modern art appreciation, caring for elderly parents internationally, exploring agricultural investment opportunities, the potential for conflict in South America, and demographic changes affecting civilization.

I am from Brazil, raised between RS state and Uruguay, close to the border. One of my great-grandfathers was from Tacuarembó (Uruguay). I have relatives in Argentina (we are all descendants from the same immigrants who came from Gallicia 118 years ago) My take is: there won't be any war between our countries anytime soon. Even despite some cultural distance of Brazil from its spanish-speaking neighbors (mainly because of some language barrier), there is good touristic and commercial interaction in the scope of Mercosur and other treaties. Having said that, I agree with Doug in the sense a civil war - especially in Brazil - is not that unlikely. The regime installed last year lacks legitimacy and is screwing around big time. If you think Brandon is bad for US, spend a few days in Brazil, watch the streets and talk to common people (do not watch the news, as most are inside L. da Silva's pockets). Even the most humble individuals openly say the election was 100% st0len...

Ethics: Catherine Austin-Fitts suggests that you go out of your way to only do business with ethical people (ex. bankers, farmers). They struggle in today’s upside world. And we’ll want them around when the wheels come off

Peter Zeihan is a very entertaining presenter but I think I agree with you guys. As far as I know, the last time we had a massive population decline was during the Great Plague, The Black Death, which gave rise to all sorts of peasants rights. It may turn out to be a good thing for the majority if it occurs naturally but without plague.

Re demigraphic decline. Noticable, that some government acknowledge it as a problem, but their solution always mass immigration, never of helping families (like in Hungary, which is criticized for it), or here in Canada, besides the immigration, they push for more euthanasia, and radical feminism, trans g and g ay education. So they solution is more destruction. Also, many countries with collapsing demography and economy pushing for more wars. Ukraine itself, instead of acknowledging their almost lowest birthrates status, they are eager to sacrifice more men for land. Russia also has problems, but at least Putin understands that and tried to end the war early on, unfortunately US had different plans, but one for sure, Russia can't and won't attack any other countries (unless cornered) again, due to negative population growth. While (seemingly) EU nations are planing to rearm and join the war. Ergo they don't need us, covid and the needle wasn't enough...

Tom Woods has a guest on sometimes who advocates for an index to replace GDP. I can't remember the name of it. It's an index that captures the value of all the transactions in the production process. So, it's a larger number than GDP. GDP only captures the final step, the sale of the final product. As Doug pointed out though, this does capture where the product was produced. This other index captures the production. I think it might double count things though, which GDP doesn't do. Maybe not. Maybe it nets things out. Like a value add calculation. A manufacturer buys $10 of materials and turns them into $20 of intermediate goods. The next manufacturer turns them into $40 of finished product. There is a total of $40 of value created here. Maybe it captures them one step at a time. Unlike GDP, if the product is exported, it would still go into the number. If it were imported, only the retail markup would be counted.

There has been a form of UBI for many all over Europe now, with the benefits system. In the U.K. there’s been a section of the community that has manipulated this for 3 generations now. Its another step lower.

Yes, the pain of loss is always challenging. For insight into how out of touch folks are, check out Mattias Desmet...he speaks of "Mass Formation." He needed to minimize his original position, because no one can accept mass psychosis - but it is truly mass psychosis. I know because I came to the same conclusion after 10 years of analytical work.

Populations have declined a lot in history, and then recovered. The plague in England for example killed possibly 50% of the population in the 14th century, but actually kept reoccurring every 5-10 years up to the 17th century, and some of the recurrences killed up to 10% of the population.

There might not be money in books but I have made an observation about the process of book writing / publishing. It does 2 things for the author. 1) It makes the author an expert in the subject they are writing about. That gives them credibility. People who write books get respect, even from the people who don't read them. 2) because they are highly regulated experts on a topic that opens doors. Authors get on podcasts and more people will listen to their own podcasts. Look at Tom Woods and later, Michael Malice. They are very articulate on certain topics because they write books. This has greatly helped them in their success....even if they make little money on books.

In a society with mandated UBI, the robots would almost certainly be exclusively owned by "The People's Republic" or more specifically the group of politicians and their armed subordinates who "look after" the well being of those poor entitled welfare recipients who need their total leadership from the palace. Sadly enough, a significant portion of the population will support this form of government.

Education causes demographic decline, noted in England. City dwelling educated people have fewer babies. Simple as that. Canada is filled with too many over educated people because they have cold climate. West is declining because they are well educated. Africa is having plenty of babies, lower education level. We have to adapt.

Declining population in more specifically to kind of GDP is in fact in my opinion very bad for a debt-based economy. The economy as we have its structure today relies on a sort of Ponzi scheme where not only do inflator way debt, but we grow the pie and so long as the growth of the pie is bigger then the growth of the debt, the per capita cost of living will stay the same. So I think without continued expansion of the population, we're actually going to have to cut not only spending but somehow reconcile the debt overhang that already exists.
