Last night I purchased (rented on Vimeo) and watched all of the videos from this tutorial. I do not have either of the two cameras. Because of budget limitations (SSI Disability), my experience has been mostly with consumer video cameras. My goal is to understand more about professional video cameras and use that information to help me with the not so professional video cameras. The closest video camera I have to being pro is the Sony CX-900. It is the only video camera I have that allows full control of manual exposure. Without going into a lot of details, from a pro video camera point of view I can see a lot of his points. From my years of experience with the Consumer/Prosumer cameras I have used, I would have to break a number of the rules he mentioned to work with the limitations I have had to put up with. I feel that a lot of his advice is more for guidance not as an absolute. The most important thing I have learned from 25 years of experience is one must know their video cameras to get the most from them. Especially before one does an important shoot! I have done mostly Church videos where I did not have control of the lighting and sound. And the Churches I have done videos at are NOT setup for video. Sadly, they are not even setup for worship. Too much vanity is the shameful goal instead of worship! So, even if one only has a consumer/Prosumer video camera, I would highly recommend watching and learning from these videos. I use most of my spare time learning new things. I wish I could afford the Sony PXW-Z150!

Doug, I recently purchased a HXR-NX100 Sony HD Camera and have used it to film 3 ice hockey games this past weekend, and I do play by play through a lav mic which I plugged into a VXLR+ which I purchased seperately. I pulled the 64gb memory card out to view and hear my voice...the picture was very impressive, but my audio was very faint. It upset me at first, but I then turned my attention to focusing on the problem. Before the games even started, I made sure there is a new battery in the mic...secondly, I made sure the power switch was in the On position, and then we did a mic check by me speaking into the mic and the cameraman was watching the audio bars on the screen display and they were moving so we thought we were good to go. I now think that the bars were moving on his screen because as I was talking during the mic check, the sound was being picked up by the mic on the front of the camera, causing those sound bars on his screen to move? I also believe that had he had headphones on (which I have yet to purchase) he would have known right there and then that something was amiss. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mike.
@DougJensenVortexMedia5 жыл бұрын
Mike, I believe that you have already figured out the problem on your own. I agree that you were probably recording the internal mic. BTW it is inconceivable to me that anyone would attempt to record important audio without using headphones. You get a big slap on the wrist for that one! :-) Get some headphones and also setup the audio configuration and check everything out before you even leave for the arena. Good luck next time.

Hi Doug, Thanks for your review of the Sony Z150 and NX100. As always, a masterful review. I wonder if you have ever done a training video on the Sony NX5R. If you have, I have not been able to locate it. Would you mind doing a comparison review between the Sony NX5R, the Sony Z150, and the Sony Z90V. I am particularly interested in knowing how each camera performs in picture quality… particularly in low light. Also in knowing how the NX5R does with its 3 1/2.8 sensor chips compared with the 1” chips on the Z150, and the Z90. The NX5R does have the advantage of having a 20X zoom, as opposed to a 12X zoom, but perhaps the other two cameras have better picture quality so that it would be more advantageous to get one of them. It seems to me that the NX5R and Z150, would have the advantage over the Z90, with dedicated rings for aperture, focus, and zoom, but on the other hand, if you don’t use manual aperture, focus or zoom, perhaps that doesn’t matter as much. Perhaps the auto focus on the Z90 is so good, that you don’t need manual focus. I wonder what the other differences are between the Z150 and the Z90. Do they both record to the same codex(es), and record at the same bit rates, or does one have an advantage over the other. Would you recommend the Z150 over the Z90? I believe that the Z150, costs about US$500.00 more than the Z90. What benefits do you get for that extra $500.00? Thanks very much for your help with this! Steve L.

Doug, I have had the NX100 for a few years now, and I have been waiting for a 4k upgrade camera. Do you feel the z150 still a viable option in 2021? I do a lot of filming for live bands, weddings, parties, ect.
@DougJensenVortexMedia3 жыл бұрын
John, the Z150 is absolutely still a good option today. To substantially step up in features and performance you'd have to go to a Z280, which will cost about twice as much. Another camera to consider in the Z150's price range is the Z90. Electronically they are very similar but have different body styles and lens controls. Other than the obvious physical differences they are almost the same. The Z90 has better AF is that is of interest to you. Good luck making a choice.

Doug while filming can you go straight in to slow motion while recording, or must you stop recording and then press the slow motion button and start recording again?

Nice presentation. I've had the Z150 for about 6 months and I love it. I had the NX5U for years before that. That is a great shooter's camera. Even though I've had the Z150 for awhile, I'm thinking of treating myself to your full course. There's just a lot about the Z150 that I'd like to hear your take on. But there are two things I wonder if you discuss in later chapters ... two things I find really inconvenient. First ... if I'm not mistaken, you cannot turn on the D Ext while the camera is recording like you could with the NX5U, the V1, and even going back into the Sony DV cameras. Even if you have assigned the D Ext to a button, you have to stop recording, hit the button, and turn the recording back on. If you're shooting news or a scene you have no control over, you don't know you need the D Ext until you've hit the end of your zoom. I had a real situation where I zoomed into a small fishing boat struggling on the reef. I zoomed in all the way (with Clear Image)... needed more. I had to shut the recording off to turn on the D Ext, making a jump cut. With prior cameras, I could hit the button and just jump to it ... sort of like dropping in the extender lever on a BetaCam lens. Strange Sony changed this. Second ... I guess this was spelled out in the manual but I didn't really grasp it until I needed it. I have a Lilliput monitor connected via HDMI. If I'm shooting HD, no problem. In 4K, however, there is a strange limitation. When you're NOT actually recording, you see the image in the external monitor. But the moment you hit Record, the screen goes blank. This was a shocker when it first happened. It's been explained to me that in 4K, the camera only has 2 image streams. Maybe there is some menu work-around for this, but I haven't found it yet. All in all, a very nice camera at a very nice price. I'll check out the rest of your course.
@DougJensenVortexMedia7 жыл бұрын
Hello. Yes I discuss both of these topics during the master class training video and you a correct on both accounts. You can't turn on/off the Digital Extender while the camera is recording, and you cannot use the viewfinder and an external monitor at the same time while the camera is recording in 4K. In standby it is okay, but once you hit the record button you're going to lose one or the other. However, as I show during the class, you have the option of giving priority to the viewfinder or the HDMI output.
@dannyleefye7 жыл бұрын
I put my money where my keyboard (mouth) is so I could watch all of the chapters. The good part is the information presented there. The bad part was that I did not yet have either camera. Last week on Wednesday, 07-19-2017 I finally opened up a box with an HXR-NX100 in it. YEA! I would have greatly preferred the PXW-Z150, but budgets usually have the final word on what I can and cannot get. The rental time for the master class had just very recently ended. Wouldn't you know it? So I will now need to scrape up enough money to rent it again so I can follow it WITH a camera. The more I watched the videos the more I was turned-off by the limitations of the HXR-NX100. But now that I have it and have gone through a lot of the settings and have shot a number of videos, I find that the limitations were not anywhere near as being a big deal as I originally thought. How big the limitations are depends on what one wants to do with the camera. I have been shooting videos for 26 years, mostly using consumer video cameras and only a few Prosumer video cameras. The HXR-NX100 is my first TRUE professional video camera. It finally breaks the chains and limitations of the consumer and Prosumer video cameras and is a great experience for me! As usual, the Sony manual is almost totally worthless!!! Combine that with my learning disability, learning my new video camera can be quite a chore at times! If I did not have my 26 years of experience and rented the master class, I would be having a ton of problems! The viewfinder is 100% worthless! What junkyard did Sony dig that thing up from? My CX-900 has the same viewfinder as the PXW-Z150. Why not on this video camera as well? The so-called clear image zoom is also worthless! Seamlessly switching from optical zoom to a limited DIGITAL zoom is old technology. So Sony's marketing people took old technology and gave it a nice name! It is fairly good in very good light but increases the noise by a lot in low light! The digital extender works great with one BAD exception! I have assigned button (3) for it. I can zoom-in approx half way and not mess with the f-stop. This help a lot in very low light situations and when I need to zoom into areas that are quite a distance! Also, it helps a lot when zooming in to see short people at the pulpit at Church. So I toggle when I need the extra zoom and when I do not need it. The exception is; it cannot be toggled while recording. One has to stop recording, toggle and then re-start recording again. DUMB SONY, very, very, DUMB SONY!!! I did not mean for this to become a review of the HXR-NX100. I just wanted to point out some things about it and the fact that the master class helped me a lot in learning it! I do not have to waste a ton of time trying to figure things out. The master class is the ONLY place I can find that actually explains how the digital extender works! A Google search turns up zilch! Thank you so much Doug Jensen for your master class! As soon as I can scrape up a little more resources, I will rent it again so I can follow it WITH my HXR-NX100 instead of without it. www.thestoprock.com

@GennadiyKrichilskiy5 жыл бұрын
Hello Shahin, I use Z100 bi-weekly and have used Z150 for about 2 hours, comparing them side by side. Final decision: Buy Z150, because of much better picture quality and it is better in low light, for church or weddings use. Just remember, all settings for color control are in Picture Profiles, not in a separate menu, like in Z100. Z100 has some extra menu buttons that are not available in Z150, and some controls, that are faster to access from Z100. I would say, that Z100 is an older model of Z190, since they are about on the same comparison level.

Hi Doug. I have an FS5 (and bought your masterclass). I'm looking to get a second camera and was considering the z150. Besides depth of field differences, how well would you say it would match with the FS5 for interviews / event sort of work? It's the same codec from what I understand and footage online looks very similar. Have you used the footage from both these cameras in the same project at all?
@DougJensenVortexMedia7 жыл бұрын
No, I haven't used the cameras side-by-side and I honestly don't have a feel for how well they would match up. The fact that they have the same codec means nothing because the codec doesn't have much to do with the look of the camera unless you push it to extremes. Outdoors or in high-contrast situations I don't think the Z150 could compete with the FS5, but indoors, under controlled lighting, and if the composition of the shots were different enough you might get away with it. But it depends how picky you are. The best advice I could give you is to rent a Z150 for a day and come to your own conclusions. Obviously your best bet is to get another FS5. Think of how much time you'll save matching cameras. Plus when you go to sell the camera someday, it will be worth more than the Z150 so the actual cost of ownership difference is less than you think.
@mattjeh7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your reply Doug. I can't afford to stretch to another FS5, but renting for sure makes sense to try my own testing.

@DougJensenVortexMedia4 жыл бұрын
Thanks you Raymond. No, I haven't had the opportunity to use the NX200.
@RaymondToms4 жыл бұрын
@@DougJensenVortexMedia I have found that the NX200 is only made for the PAL market, so that would be reason you would not have seen it. As far as I can tell, the only difference to the Z150 is that it uses the S rather than the L codec, does not have MPEG 10bit 4:2:2 and it does not have SDI out. I used to need the MPEG for news jobs, but they seem to accept any format these days. The NX200 would mean a considerable saving - $A3000 vs $A6000. Have you ever compared the S and L codecs?

Thank you Doug, Awesome video. I plan on viewing the rest of your video on the Z150, outstanding work and easy to follow. On the Z150, what tripod are you using?
@DougJensenVortexMedia4 жыл бұрын
Thank you Emmett. On little cameras like the Z150 I use a Sachtler FS-6 with Flowtech 75 legs. It is a fantastic little system and will served me for years and years with many different cameras. A tripod system is the most important accessory you can buy for your camera.

Doug, You are the only person on KZbin that answer viewers question. THANK YOU Do you have any thoughts on the Panasonic HC-X1

Hi Timothy, sorry I don't have any experience with any of the Panasonic cameras. I don't even know what an HC-X1 unless I look it up. :-)

Thank you Doug for a thorough and great presentation. I have been looking at the z150 for a while now, but really couldn't find adequate specs on this unit until I came across your tutorial. I do have one question in regards to the z150. Is it possible to hook up a wireless video transmitter on the z150 to transmit to a wireless receiver hooked up to a monitor (flat screen)? Thanks for your help!
@DougJensenVortexMedia Жыл бұрын
Hi Doug, I'm glad you liked my video. Thanks. I don't really have any experience with or insight into wireless transmitters. I know there are quite a few options out there but I have never needed any of them. I would assume that any transmitter that takes and HDMI or SDI input would work just fine with the Z150.

Dear Doug Jensen, crystal clear description of your description. Kindly say, if I want the color looks like this video, which option i need to set in this (z150) camera while recording ( in order to avoid to do the colour management in final cut pro or da vinci resolve)?

It could have been the perfect tool if they apply bigger apperture. At least f1.8 to f2.8 could be the sweet spot to pair with 1" sensor.
@DougJensenVortexMedia7 жыл бұрын
I agree, but then the price would have to be much higher than $3200.

Hi Doug Jensen just wondering what camera store can i buy that price? thanks.

I bought my camera in May 2016 from B&H for $3199.

My camera is at XAVC QFHD at 25P frames per second could you tell me how to change it to 30 frames per second in the menu please.
@DougJensenVortexMedia6 жыл бұрын
Hi George, as I discuss in chapter 5 of my Z150 Master Class, you would need to go to the OTHERS > 50/60i menu and change the setting to 60i. Then you will be able to choose a 30p or 24p recording format from the REC SET menus.

Doug, great program, thanks. I like the HXR-NX100. However, Sony is releasing the 2 new 4K models in December - HXRNX80, ($2300), and the PXWZ90V, ($2800). I'm really torn between these 2 families. Could you compare these as well? Thanks!

Hi Steve. I am currently working on a five-hour Master Class training video series that will cover the PXW-Z90, HVR-NX80, and FDR-AX700. It should be released in January for streaming on Vimeo. In the mean time, here is some demo footage I have shot with the Z90. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bXPOY32hg8mVi68

Thank you for all of the time you put into this, Doug! If I will be mainly shooting in 1080, are there any advantages to getting the PXW-Z150 instead of the HXR-NX100. The main focus will be live production recording in a concert type atmosphere with medium light.
@DougJensenVortexMedia7 жыл бұрын
You think you don't need 4K now, but what about tomorrow? Buy for the future. In fact I almost never shoot HD anymore. Almost anything worth shooting is worth shooting in 4K even if you only deliver the video in HD right now. Plus, the Z150 is simply a better camera than the NX100. The viewfinder alone is worth the extra cost, but you also get 120 fps slow motion, a better sensor, SDI output, more assign buttons, a better XAVC codec, XDCAM codecs, and the list goes on. Bottom line -- get a Z150.

I really appreciate your clear communication and non-complicated approach! Thank you. On the video you mentioned that footage from z150 can be loaded into an editing system such as Adobe. I am running Premeire CS6 and when I attempt to load these mxf files, I get an error message which says, "the importer reported a generic error". Can you please explain.

I'm glad that you liked the video. Whenever I talk about NLE compatibility it is always with the assumption that someone is using the latest version of their NLE. And as far as I know, footage from the Z150 is indeed 100% compatible with the latest version of all the major NLEs. But I have no way of testing (nor any interest in testing) footage to see if it is compatible with older, outdated software. There are many, many great reasons for a professional to upgrade to Premiere CS besides just file compatibility.
