Doug Seegers was a homeless street musician born in New York who lives in Nashville.
The two musicians Jill Jonson and Magnus Carlson from Sweden met him on the street after a tip from a hot dog salesman. They were very taken by his lyrics and flair for singing.
So they decided to record the song GOING DOWN TO THE RIVER written by Doug Seegers in the Cash Cabin Studio. • Doug Seegers ft. Jill ...

We called him Duke the Drifter back in New York. Doug and several other friends moved to Austin back in 76. Loved playing and singing with Duke

I discovered Doug Seegers as a singer a couple of years ago. I totally loved him and thought where has he been all my life. Now to learn his background makes it even more. I hope he makes it. He should be driven in a limo, not living on the street.

There must be something about this man's voice, the simplicity of his song, and maybe his life experience that weirdly makes this very moving. With that yodelly catch in his voice, it could so easily be marred ; just a little tricky-tricky overdoing it, would have been enough to spoil its perfection.

Isn't it ironic that this man is discovered, saved from the streets and addiction, promoted and made famous, all by a nation of atheists...and yet everyone blindly wants to thank god? *facepalm*

you can't fathom the mysterious way of God in helping those who calls on his name...he even uses the most evil man to serve in his cause...

Jimmy, you'd have to clearly define mysterious, God, evil and cause for your reply to even begin to be understandable to those who don't fathom your personal mythology.

Sweden isn't so much atheist, we just have more of a distant relationship to religion and view it more as a private matter. and of course seperated curch and state. I mean, sure we might have most atheist per capita or whatever, but to call it a "atheist nation" is wrong and missleading. We are still a very christian country. All our holidays and traditions (exept midsummers eve that is an old pagan thing) is christian. I think Sweden actually has more churches per capita than many other countries. And if it isn't Lutheran it's something else, like livets ord or something.
