Try clamping the wood pieces together with out gluing. Then carve while clamped. Paint or stain individual slats. Then glue together. Reduces taping time and messy paint/stain bleed

@Richard.Dawson just about everybody that makes flags do clamp them, carve them, stain or paint them, glue and then carve the back. Have you not looked at any other flag videos.

There are 13 stripes and 5 pieces of wood. How does separating them stop the bleeding thru because no matter what one board will still have 2-3 stripes or partial stripes which still requires taping and only if the stripe happened to boarder exactly at the end of a board you are still going to tape as much. If there were 13 pieces of wood then absolutely you get zero bleed but even with the wood in 5 pieces those 13 stripes are still going to be butting up against each other on the same piece of wood so how does that help? I have not tried this with stain but the absolute perfect way to stop bleed thru with paint is taping the edge of the tape the same color that’s under it. So if you painted white then taped for red, I would paint the edge of the tape with white first. Then go back over with the red. The white will seal off any red from getting under it. Works perfectly every time for the crispest lines imaginable. Now with stain I have not tried that except maybe wet the edge of the tape ever so slightly and see if that helps with any bleeding. I really do not see how separating the wood helps save any time.
@CSP.D-zignWerqz4 күн бұрын
@RushWorkingMan keep them separated you don't have to use tape at all. Where the stripes meet the union, you just hammer in a razor blade on the line about a 16th of an inch. That's what I've seen in a lot of videos of people making flags.

As always, great job Max. Wavy flags are one of the hardest to do. You make it look easy. The edges puts the flag a step higher than others I've seen. Great touch. Your shading with the torch added a great touch as well. Something that works for me to keep mistakes and paint bleed to a minimum: When you have the first stripes taped (in this you taped the white first), after you stained the red stripes and it dries, you can spray on one or two light coats of seal. Once that dries, change up the taping (take off the tape on the white stripes, put tape on red strips) then stain the white stripes. If any stain bleeds, it shouldn't stain over the red before you can wipe it off (seal coat should stop the stain). This method works even better for staining stars. Blue stain for union, one or two coats of seal, then carve out the stars. Start staining stars white. Any white that gets on the blue cleans up quick and easy with a wipe of a rag.

Very Impressive ... a true novice woodworker ... I've built cabinets, and they fall apart ... this project (RW&B and the flag) close to my heart seems simple enough, with minimal tools, that I think I will attempt it. One question (if you actually look at comments made to old videos) ... why the 1" strips? Couldn't you just trim off the curved edges of the 2x4's and glued them together?
@Masterproll Жыл бұрын
Very nice work, i will try it on my own next vecation. 👍 You should panit/stain the back sides on the edges too, that would make a perfekt look. For the glueing proces use baking paper as table cover. The most wood glues dont stick to it and you can often reuse the paper, because the glue will fall of, if it is totaly dry. Just do a dry run befor using a new gluetye for the first time. Keep on the good work!

Great video! I really like your shaping around the outside to make it look thinner and more like an actual flag! I have one question though. I see it done all the time, but i don't understand. If the stripes and field are just masked off, then painted or stained (which looks great, don't get me wrong)...why all the time and headache for carving out all the stars? Is there a particular reason the stars aren't also just masked off with the stencil and then stained or sprayed? I ask this with all due respect. The whole rest of the flag is flat and smooth, then carved stars. If it's a bragging rights thing, I get it. I just can't rationalize all the extra effort. Please help me understand. Thanks.

Gorgeous work. How long did it take you? Does staining the stripe section all white, then taping only once for the red work? For the stencil, you can use a spray photo fixative to apply it. The spray doesn't leave residue and you can reuse the stencil. You could then mark around it and spray the Stars white. Leave it like that or carve out. You save time not having to trace. Excellent, creating work. The edges really do lift it to another level

I've done pretty good selling flags over the past few years. I did a thin edge one like this a few years ago. I always considered it my flag cause it took 3 years to sell. I had it listed for 100 more than my normal flags. A few friends told me it was cool but not necessarily worth the extra money. Now that it's gone I miss it cause I really liked it.

Very nice I might have to try this. I bet you can also carve those waves in with the table saw. You would need to make a little jig to hold it at the angle to ride against the fence. Then you clamp a strait edge (Make shift fence) at a 30 to 45 degree angle of the table saw blade. You raise the blade a 3/16 to 1/4 in above the table of saw and push the wood across the blade. You are basically using the saw blade as a large shaper. Then just raise the blade a bit more and make another pass. It sounds way more dangerous than it is. LOL Izzy swan ha a few videos on it and one he even makes a really nice jig that is far more advance than I am describing. But I have done it myself several times for projects that need coves. My dad was a wood worker cabinet maker and he shown me this trick 30 plus years ago. Izzy just took it to the next level. But you might play with it a little maybe it will work. Link below for Izzy's video. But really nice work. I have made a lot of nice things with 2x4's. It is cheap lumber. You just need to be a bit picky when buying them. kzbin.info/www/bejne/noKsXqyGaLejeMk
