The first year that came to mind when I read the title was “2005.” I literally jumped in joy hearing Doug say 2005 as well! The best thing about those vehicles is that most of them are still relatively obtainable. You can have an iconic sports car before they added all the electronics without spending 6 figures.

This has to be 2010. Think about all the special cars that were on the market during that time! Any DuPont Registry Buyers Guide will show you that (what happen to those, miss them). That was the tail-end of the analog sports car, but with restrained modern styling and tech. M3 GTS, 997 911 GT3 RS, LFA, Apollo S, Veyron SS, the various Zondas, the Agera, 458 Italia, Gallardo Superleggera, Murcy SV, Vette ZR1, the return of McLaren with the 12C, Sesto Elemento, One-77, DBS, 918 Concept, SLS, Shelby Super Snake, the return of the Camaro, CX-75, RX-8 R3, 599 GTO, Nissan GTR, Challenger SRT8, 370Z, GranTurismo, XKR, Grand Cherokee SRT8, R8 for the V10 with the FSI, there might’ve even been some rogue 722 SLRs out and about, the Exige 260, TTRS, F-150 Raptor, RS6 Avant, Spyker C8, 8C Spider (yes, it made it to 2010), IS-F and we can go on forever!

1972. Big Bumpers and emissions hadn't kicked in. But car design was in a siblime state. You had the Ferrari Daytona, Lamborghini Muira, BMW 3.0csi and 2002tii, Citroen SM and too many others to mention. To be sure there are many beautiful cars from the 1960's also, but 1972 was a peak year. By the mid-70's, regulations were strangling cars. They eventually recovered, after a fashion, but were never as beautiful or unrestrained again.

I respectfully disagree. Cars back then got you WAY less power for the money. If you wanted to do 0-60 in the 5-second range, you needed to be a baller that could afford a Porsche 911. Today? You can do it with a base Mustang that's considerably more reliable and gets 30mpg. A new Mazda Miata is just as quick as the original Shelby GT350.

That’s the best “classic” car year, in terms of Modern cars 1997 is by far the best year, just look at Toyota’s lineup: Mk4 Supra, Celica GT4, Ae111 Levin with a Blacktop 20v 4AGE with factory ITBs, The 2nd Gen Century (ie the V12 Century, the only mass produced Japanese car ever with a V12), The Landcruiser, the majority of the Lexus Lineup…. THIS IS COMING FROM ONE MANUFACTURER!!! 😂😂😂 and nearly every Japanese Manufacturer is doing this as well as the Italians as well as the Germans and Americans (albeit to a lesser extent).

@@griffins750 I would certainly agree that the GT350 is cooler and more special than a Miata. The point I'm trying to make is that modern cars offer so much more power than in the 1970s, and they do so while being far more safe, lightweight, fuel-efficient, and reliable. We are absolutely spoiled nowadays in terms of power and performance, and I'd choose it any day.

06 6 speed Acura TSX owner here. Doug is right the mid-2000s is the sweet spot IMO. Car handles like it's on rails with double wishbones front and rear, you can drive the snot out of it on a twisty back road without dying, crazy reliable, easy to work on/get parts, and it had a simple intuitive interior. Only gripe i have is it's a rattling squeak fest after 220K miles and nearly 20 years. No cars before or after this era really do it for me. I plan to drive it another 10 years or so until i can get a FK8 Type R for under $20K.

Best year for cars is 05, you had the 370z, the R34 skyline was heading out, the Ferrari F430 was out, Ford GT, Carrera GT, E46 M3, which imo is the best looking M3, Bugatti Veyron, Lamborghini Murcielago, Infiniti G35, Infiniti FX35, best year for cars

I'd argue that 2013 takes it. I'm not at all sure what crap was out then, but it had the P1, 918 Spyder, and LaFerrari. What a pinnacle year for the top dogs of the automotive world. Second pick would be an era I could buy a McLaren F1, 911 GT1, and CLK-GTR. If I could go back further, I'd pick 1964 with the first ever Mustang, Ford GT40, Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe, and Ferrari 250 GTO all available at the same time.

totally agree. Also the german trios were all still v8's (c63, m3, rs5), the gen 5 viper just came out, corvette c6 zr1, and hot hatches like focus st and golf r/gti were starting to pick up in popularity to bring us the hot hatch market we have right now

Thank God! I was already worried we won't get a "Doug argues about Cars" Episode this Weekend. I love listening to Doug & Friends talk about anything Car related, even if i end up disagreeing with him or the Friends sometimes. Great Topic btw! And regarding the BMW M5 with V10 as well as the Audi, definitely agree with Doug here. Prost & Cheers from Berchtesgaden in the Bavarian Alps

Before watching I honed in on 1996 but in general I'd say 95-05 was the golden era. You had a really good cross section of performance, analog engagement, reliability and efficiency. Before 95 you slide into malaise and after 05 you slide into reliability issues caused by the new fuel economy and emissions regs.

I'm with Kennan, 97 was before they started putting CAN-BUS in everything so you couldn't even change the stereo out without some adapter, no touchscreens, everything had a button or a switch or a lever, things finally started having enough power but not too much where now every SUV has 300HP but it's ok because there's 50 airbags in them!

Doug is more on point than he realizes. In 2004 Mercedes blitzed the horsepower wars. Car & Driver tested their most powerful V12 in their smallest car and did 0-60 in 3.6 seconds. Thats the first year of the Twin Turbo V12 SL600. The 2005 AMG SL65 would've been even quicker but no street tires could keep up with it's 604hp and 738 lbs/ft of torque. But in 2005 the SL65 laid down an 11.9 quarter mile at 123mph. Mercedes' own V8 SLR Mclaren could only match the SL600's 0-60 [3.6sec] and lost to the SL65's 50-70mph [2.3sec] times. What a year to drive, in 2005.

97 without a doubt, especially if you include Japan-only cars we’re just starting to get as import legal. I might even dial it back to 94-95. Early 00’s had some OK cars, but most good ones were too expensive unless you were rich. 90’s had attainable good cars.

I had already figured out 2005 before Doug started. He was right there is only one correct year. Carrera, F430, Ford GT, Pagani Zonda, Lamborghini Murcielago, Veyron, Aston Martin DB9, Cadillac CTS V, Cadillac XLR, Mitsubishi Lancer, original Porsche Cayenne S, (missed Turbo S by one year) the list goes on and on.
