Most of the strange quirks you mentioned are a very traditional mini thing. The red for sport is a John cooper works color scheme. The plaid pattern was an interior option for the old minis. The checkerboard was a common roof paint scheme since forever. The central circle in the dashboard goes back to the old mini’s where ALL the gauges were in a circle. I had a 1974 mini while I lived in England and seeing a lot of the Cary overs are cool. Most people hate the 3 cylinder engine since for a while it wasn’t made by BMW and suffered as far as reliability, power and fuel economy. As far as all the things that made you smile is what made people into Mini people. Many of the things they got rid of with the Countryman is what many of the purists loved. That being said I will take it over any other crossover if price wasn’t a issue. Thanks for the great review.

Another great review, Doug. I've owned a 2005 MINI since new and don't think I'll ever get rid of it, but I'm always game for cool new cars. I wish the new MINIs retained some of the first generation's features. In particular, on my car the window up/down and door lock/unlock switches are toggles in the center console, which is a super logical place to have them (especially on a manual transmission car). Also, on my car the tachometer is right in front of the steering wheel and I can use its digital display screen to show the speed: everything you need in one gauge, right in front of your face (like a Ferrari). Last, I don't know why MINI had to redesign the nose of their cars so drastically to comply with pedestrian safety guidelines, especially when you consider that a car like the Lamborghini Aventador's nose is below knee height. The new MINIs aren't as attractive as the first-generation cars, IMO, but I love that this vehicle is still fun and quirky and is still available with a manual. Thanks for all the great reviews.

Hey Doug, I think you should do a video based on quirky federal and maybe state regulations for vehicles on your other channel! I love to hear about these regulations and how the automobile companies try and get around it to implement style. Your channel is what I follow for the quirkiness. I can go to any channel and find out how much horsepower a car has. But only you would say why the DTRL LED turns off when the signal light is engaged and the mandate to back it. So it’s just a suggestion but I like learning about how things are and the way that it is. You seem to convey that seamlessly!

I drive an R50 mini and my Mrs drives a 2018 cooper and all the rear wipers suck major ass on them, to the point a lot of people just remove them. The interiors on the new minis (2018 onwards) are super nice. Also should point out, a lot of stuff is standard. You pay a ridiculous amount for the John Cooper Works package, which is mostly just interior features. I do think doug would freaking love to drive the 3 door JCWs. They are crazy fun to drive. From all the years, Doug seems to prefer the cars that are fun zippy little cars.

@@mikevale3620 I did say mostly just interior features, not just interior features. For the price to performance, you really are paying mostly for interior spec. You know that because if you spec a cooper (non JCWs) model to be similar the huge price tag is for the interior. Just look at the wheels, seats and steering wheel price options for JCWs and you'll see what I mean!

In my previous car with manual seats, I used to like to recline my seat if I'd be waiting for a few minutes. But now my current car is old, and when the power seats eventually fail, I'd hate for it to be in an unsafe position. Recliners should be manual because you just lean back to wear you want it. Power seats can be nice for sliding the seat forward and back, but there should be a manual override for people who share a vehicle. Auto seats are good for memory settings with a shared vehicle, but automakers could also develop memory settings for manual seats--just make come kind of blocker or indicator for the various track positions. Furthermore, people who don't share a vehicle don't change their seating position often; power seats are an overrated luxury, especially considering the hassle if they were to fail. I'm glad my front passenger seat adjusts manually because I wouldn't want to spend money replacing power seats for the one or two times a year I might need to slide that seat forward to accommodate cargo.

I’ve driven one of these for the last nine years. Provably one of the best cars I’ve ever had and I’ve had a few. OK I live in Sweden where it’s snowing so the four-wheel-drive is great but in general it drives like a gokart, has plenty of room and never fails to put a smile on my face.

@@blue85246 I replaced it with a Mini SE electric about a year ago. Had a few minor problems like the heater fan motor dying and boot latch flaking out but otherwise it was reliable and roomy. I would recommend always going for 16 inch rims if you can. It rides too crashy on 17 and 18s as it is sports car suspension.
