I've said this for years--I hate the fact that some car company makes 20 of a car, it sells out within minutes, meanwhile you didn't even know it was coming out. If you have 100x the money, you still can't buy one because you didn't buy the previous 19 models from that manufacturer. Then, the people that buy these cars never drive them. You might as well buy a painting.

It makes the whole supercar world/buying process even more cliquey & tribalistic, along with making the cars unattractive from a consumer perspective. I couldn’t hear about the car till it was sold out. Completely agree with Doug's first point, the sheer quantity of these cars is making them less special, but so is exposure and publicity of them thanks to the internet. It's not that the new ones are bad, I bet they are amazing to drive. But back in the mid-to-late 90s when I was also a kid, you had like a half dozen proper supercars (Diablo, F40, F50 etc) and even less hypercars (McLaren F1, CLK GTR, etc). Therefore, they became almost legendary as you pretty much never saw one, and without KZbin seeing one featured on TV was a treat. I remember seeing a yellow Diablo in the late 90s in a showroom and I couldn't believe how wide it was. A few years later I got up close to a F40 in the same place, and I still remember seeing the carbon fibre weave through the thin paint to this day. But with KZbin, you can see everything you ever want to know or see on pretty much any new car.

As a 20 year old guy who’s fairly new to the car community, I own a 2001 celica GTS and to tell you the truth no one really wants the most expensive fastest car on the market anymore. What’s cooler than ever is niche interest cars that are tailored to your specific taste and what fits your vibe. Some people just don’t make sense driving certain cars and it’s like every hyper car manufacturer assumes a ton of people will buy these when it’s really only a few people. This is why they’re thinking of bringing back older models like the celica, or the Honda prelude potentially in 2025. People like the in between cars and just durable solid made vehicles.

To me 911's have always felt like they intentionally hold back on the "craziness", to leave room for the next iteration. It goes along with the mindset of today's society. If a little is good, too much has to be even better! Whether it's superhero movies, Hallmark movies, or just making entertainment content in general. There are so many things being made so quickly these days, it's impossible to consume it all. Virtually nothing feels special anymore because everything gets overdone as soon as people get a whiff of something becoming popular. It's a reason the majority of influencers are the bane of society. It all goes back to that classic line from The Incredibles, when everybody is super, nobody is.

If you look at the Urus SE and Temerario, they have a completely different identity. The Temerario doesn't look like a baby Revuelto like the Gallardo and Huracán did miniature Murciélago and Aventador, it's clear Lambo is going in a different direction and the next-generation flagship model will look completely different too and maybe with time the general public perception, mine included, may change and our eyes might adapt to it.

I think most of it revolves around drama, and the fact that you don’t have to ‘earn’ speed anymore. Before it was like a game. You endured a rough/sketchy ride, shifted harshly through the gears and were rewarded with a thrilling/terrifying experience of loud noises and speed. And that drama made you love the car (and the looks of it) for giving you a unique experience driving it. I think EVs finally taught car enthusiasts that it was never really about the speed.

For me the cars seem to be functionally the same. 2 seats, not much room and a big engine. Usually the unique stuff is what I'm interested in. Koenigsegg Gemera with 4 seats. The AMG one with a 1.6 liter Formula 1 V6. Ford GT with that classic looking body compared to the hyper optimised carbon fiber shells.

The first time I noticed this exhaustion was with Koenigsegg. I've never met a car guy who knows or cares about all the different Koenigsegg models. And they're all trading for $2mill and up. They just pumped one new model after another and they never felt special. You have the CC, CC8S, CCR, CCX, CCGT, CCXR, CCX Edition, CCXR Edition, CCXR Special Edition, Trevita, Quant, Agera, Agera R, Agera S, One:1, Agera RS, Agera Final, Regera, Jesko Attack, Jesko Absolut, Gemera, CC850 and the Chimera. And all of these, except the CC prototype, have been released in the last 22 years. That's 22 models in 22 years!!! They're probably great cars, but I struggle to care anymore.
@rahulmandala49303 сағат бұрын
I get the point you're trying to bring across, but I wouldn't say that Koenigsegg has released 22 models in 22 years. - The CC, CC8S, CCR, CCX, CCGT, CCXR, CCX Edition, CCXR Edition, CCXR Special Edition, and Trevita all are a part of the CC series, as in they're all trims and variations of the singular CC model. - Same case with the Agera as it was with the CC. The Agera nameplate has the variations such as Agera R, Agera S, One:1, Agera RS, and Agera Final. Even the Chimera is a commisioned one-off of the Agera utilizing the gearbox from the CC850 and engine from the Jesko. - The Regera is a bespoke ultra luxury GT model with a differentiated philosophy, of which 80 units were produced. - The Quant is a concept, and doesn't qualify as an actual production-ready model. - The Jesko has two variations: The Attack (track-built and tuned version) and the Absolut (Streamlined version geared for top speed) - The Gemera is another bespoke model. - The CC850 is a retro-modernized version of the classic CC model. All in all, a total of 6 bespoke models have been introduced by Koenigsegg, not 22.

When I look at demand for the high end manual Porsche cars (GT3, S/T) it makes me wonder why more manufacturers don't go for that market. It isn't about going as fast as possible. It is about having pleasure from the act of driving a well engineered car. The feel of the inputs and the sound of the engine are more important than quarter mile times or 0-60. BTW, I got more excited seeing an SVX on the road the other day than I do when I see something like a McLaren.

Long list of reasons not necessary. The “rare” factor is gone. Also, I would suggest the Lamborghini Miura was the prototype as the first supercar. The leading Ferrari at the time , I think, was the front engine 275/GTB. Seeing either of those cars at that time, in person, was nothing less than a revelation.
@seancurtin89176 сағат бұрын
Doug, I definitely agree with you about these points. One thing I think you should be aware of is as a kid the cars probably felt so special because they were unobtainable for you. You lust after things you cannot get. The Veyron seems so crazy when you are 15 years old and you keep those feelings into adulthood but when the Chiron comes out it's just another supercar that you can review. Also you're at the point now where you could buy any of the 10s of super/hypercars you review every year so I think you definitely have an overstimulation of those vehicles especially compared to normal people. Good video.

Let's summarise: -700-1500HP V8-V12, possibly hybrid -200+ mph top speed -0-60 in 1-3 seconds -Around 3000lb curbweight -All carbon-fibre -250,000-4 million $ starting price, the options could buy you a house -Several new trims or special models every now and then, each more track focused than the last and each more expensive -Special touches that try to distinguish themselves from other supercars. milled aluminium, titanium screws, carbon fibre valve caps

This explanation is all over the place. Saying that McLaren keeps spitting out meh supercars is not the same conversation as “none of these $2-3 million cars excites the 7-year-old kid in me, and here’s why.” Doug never specifically runs through the different cars to say why they aren’t exciting. Hybrid powertrain? That’s modern…sorry. Can’t beat a Tesla Plaid? That’s probably a testament to how great Tesla’s technology is. Also, if you measure based on that, then: Dodge Demon? These cars are just about going fast. So were the RUF CTR, then Diablo, then XJ220, then EB110, then F1. The early 90’s era was a golden age of OMG cars coming out to one-up each other on top speed. I think Doug has a valid point in here, but it doesn’t get made. The Jesko in the thumbnail is a beautiful car. I find most of Koenigsegg’s other cars a little “whatevs” when I see them online. The Rimac is an evolutionary vehicle. If you think the design isn’t gimicky enough, okay. That’s fine. The criticism maybe should fall on whether the $2-3 million cars deliver on the dream. If SF-90 prices are falling, does it make spending $3 million on a hybrid supercar that perhaps isn’t better a chump’s purchase? If P1’s require a battery-out service, doesn’t that create an opportunity for modernizing those cars for far less than buying a new car that is less interesting?

@fenrirslip7 сағат бұрын
Which is why they're likely not gonna do anything crazy in terms of speed with the Tourbillon. We know that it'll be fast, but what makes the Tourbillon special is the fact that instead of an 8.0L quad-turbocharged W16, it has an 8.3L naturally aspirated V16. The last car that I can recall that went into production with a V16 was the Cizeta Moroder V16T. I'm not gonna count the Devel Sixteen since that car has been struggling to be taken seriously for years at this point.
