I bought my 2013 Abarth new in July of 2013, with 101 miles. In the next few days, it'll be turning 68,000 miles. I've driven this car from Seattle to SoCal, to Salt Lake City, even a 6200 mile road trip to Wisconsin. I've taken this car camping more times than I can count. I've hauled things that you'd never dream of (always taking pics). I've had a couple of intermittent electric gremlins that occurred early on a couple of times, and then have not returned. I've had some trim issues that I've been able to resolve on my own. And zero mechanical issues. I knew when I bought this car, the 'reputation' of FIAT, but I didn't care. I'm also aware of the haters of this car/brand, and honestly, let 'em hate. This car has brought me the kind of driving joy and experience I never thought I have, coupled with a tiny footprint, yet capable cargo (you'd be surprised how much you can fit in one). Last November I left my 9-5 job to start doing delivery with Amazon, using my Abarth. I took out the passenger and rear seats-and the amount of boxes I can fit is the same amount people are putting in much larger vehicles. I use and abuse this car daily. I'm horrible with maintenance. Maybe my Abarth is an exception to the 'rule' but this car has happily taken everything I've done to it, and keeps going. Every single time I drive my car for deliveries, I am the luckiest man in the world...getting paid to drive the car I love. I have confidence that even with my maintenance 'schedule' that my Abarth will be around for many reliable years and miles.

My brother, a driving instructor, has a 2012 Abarth 500, which he`s had from new, it's done 220,000 miles, the only breakdown he`s had was a capillary pipe clip breaking on the thermostat housing at around 160,000 miles, that was repaired at the side of the road with a jubilee clip which is still there, I also took the catalyst off at 200,000 miles & it was literally as new inside, a compression test was done around the same time, the readings were still within factory tolerances. so they are reliable cars (as long as you service them correctly). Its had a couple of engine sensors go (temp & cam position), as well as an alternator, but when they went, it didn't stop the car, just put warnings on the dash &/or made it run a little rougher. Yes, some of the trim looks flimsy, but it does last (yours doesn't look like it was very well looked after) Yes, there's been minor annoyances, like a couple of door handle hinges & seat release levers breaking (has levers on his, not webbed straps), has occasional issues with the bluetooth, but overall it's been a great, reliable car that suffers new drivers every day who abuse it without flinching. Sadly it was rear ended (lightly) at the beginning of the year by an Audi & written off by the insurance company (largely because they undervalued it due to the mileage), but we had it back from them & I`ll get round to repairing it soon, because we're trying to get it up to half a million miles on the original running gear 😁 I`m from a Fiat family, between us we`ve had loads, & contrary to popular belief, they more reliable (when looked after) than many "premium" cars, like VAG... Sadly, because of their reputation, they`re very cheap on the used market, & because they`re so cheap, people are reluctant to spend money on even basic servicing, which is a shame, because when you do look after them, you basically have a car for life. And as you found out, they give you joy to drive, as do 99% of Italian cars! 😎

I had a Fiat Bravo 1.4 TJet (same engine as the 500 Abarth) and literally had 0 problems in 8 years and 220000Km, I've only done the regular maintenance. When I sold it, it was still running perfectly. Interesting, the Mercedes C class that replaced the Bravo had many issues despite the fact it costs 4 times more. I decided to sell it after 5 years to avoid getting into expensive repairs out of warranty...
@JGee-hu6lk4 жыл бұрын
I agree in that my 2013 Abarth with 93k has had less issues than my 2014 GLI with 72k. Both are tuned, the Abarth has Eurocompulsion installed at 13k and the GLI Unitronic stage 2 ECU and TCU at 50k. The Fiat, 1 window regulator under warranty, one clutch line not under warranty, one set of front brake pads. The GIi, one battery under warranty, one starter which was not under warranty, subwoofer rattle not under warranty, two sets of front brake pads, center cupholder is broken, driver seat wear is horrible on the bolster, and now I have the timing chain rattle. The Gli is faster, but the Abarth has my heart. If I sell it I will either buy another or go to a Alfa 4C.

I have a 2013 Fiat 500 pop with almost 70,000 miles that is in way better condition than the one in the video. I picked mine up from an R title lot, gave it some love and care, and it's been great ever since. Also a few things: That "hole" by the buttons on the dash is for the speaker for the voice recognition. The cupholders he pointed out are the REAR cupholders. I don't know about his specific 500, but every other one I've seen has had two cupholders under the gearshift/center collumn. Plus a little slot that's perfect for a wallet or a cell phone. There are buttons behind the steering wheel that control the radio: channel on left, volume on right. It's way easier to use those than the buttons on the dash. Also, while mentioning weird stuff, how did you not mention the switches for the windows? They're on the center collumn for some reason. Finally there is an AUX port and a usb port in the glovebox. Its way in the back and lights up when the car is on. It took me months to find the damned thing. I only noticed it when I happened to look at the right angle while changing CDs.

It may be under 10k to buy - but as a first car, this is probably going to be difficult and expensive to insure... And Doug said enough about quality. It may sound like a funny idea when Doug the fashion statement talks about it - but it's really annoying if you have to make choices all the time if you want to spend on repairs again - or allow it to crumble away... There are enough really good cars around for that kind of money...

No Troll fiat quality is OK, they last forever... Noone knows if the mileage of this car is original and if maybe it's owner was a butcher... Mihael koštrun fiats are prices of crap, that is a fact. The engines aren’t near bulletproof lasting about 100k miles (you want bulletproof, buy a Toyota). And anyways, how many old fiats driving around (spoiler alert, there’s none). Lastly, Chrysler vehicles are known for being unreliabe.

I have an old Mercedes clk 320 and well, Mercedes have had big problems with rust. The panels at every wheel is eaten up in the corners by rust. Im Lucky that a previous owner did a rust treatment on the under carriage, no problems there atleast. Well my point was, I think its pathetic that we have to put up with car manufactures producing cars that rusts. That shouldnt be a thing. We already have to put up with shit quality overall Having to spend thousands of dollars changing parts because they are not built to last

173,000 miles on my Abarth, several rallies, crossed the country West-East and South North a few times! Driving it like I stole it! Car as a slight tune (195hp, thank you Eurocompulsion)... Only concerns I had was turbo #1 (factory defect), turbo #2 (failed after a few days, because of an idiot mechanic - has been fired -), turbo #3 (ok I blew that one) and one head gasket (at 150,000 miles). On the small little things side, the passenger seat latch is dead (you can still tilt the seat with the handle on the left side of the seat though), one window regulator died, one half shaft has been replaced at 150,000 miles and a few little insignificant things that I won't even bother to replace. The Abarth is one of the funniest little car to drive, it's fun in the canyons and it's hard to beat in traffic! And the good thing is that a second hand low mileage engine can be found under $1,000...

m.A.A.dVillain I bought a used one two months ago (due to this video) and it is the most fun I have had with any car I have owned. Cost me $9750 with 35,500 miles (2013 convertible, mint, updated air intake and exhaust when purchased). It is so tiny that parking in the city is a breeze. In a parking lot, it is half the length of a parking spot and about 2/3 the width. Friends think the car is ridiculous until I take them for a spin... then they can’t believe how fast it is (I also upgraded the ECU and added a GoPedal).
@RichieRouge2066 жыл бұрын
I think that 500 has been abused by previous and careless owners. I had a 2008 500 Sport with double the mileage and it was pretty rattle free, especially with crappy British road surfaces. They’re incredibly popular here and definitely better for reliability than Fiats of old.

I love my 2013 Abarth, I have a white with those wheels and the red decal/mirror caps. I got it used for around $10k and its fun as hell to drive, watching this video makes me want to jump in the car right now. I think that I lucked out in the quality department because yes the interior is cheap but mine still looks fresh unlike that one there, my wheels are also in much better condition. I've been on two road trips from FL to the DMV area and to CT and this car ran strong both times plus the gas mileage is sick, on the longest trip I spent a total of $240 in gas. I also get quite a bit of attention from random people, some actually stop next to me in traffic to talk about it. Everything you said about the exhaust note and sport mode is absolutely true, as for the back seats, I often fold them down for months at a time which increases the exhaust sound in the cabin and when they are up I take out the headrests because they obscure my vision. The car also fits everywhere, I have put it into many different pockets within traffic and parking spaces not meant for normal sized cars. Thank you for talking about it, the car is awesome and I plan to keep mine until it doesn't drive anymore then i'll probably build it into a track car. BTW I had no idea about the high-beam "lockout".
@gryfandjane6 жыл бұрын
Interesting fact about the Abarth logo... Carlo Abarth made his name performance-tuning the Fiats of the day, which were mostly rear-engined. Hence in the cars, as with the scorpion, the sting was in the tail. Abarth has an interesting history, well worth looking up, that makes the new Abarth models easier to understand... they're very much in the spirit of the race-winning originals.

What the hell do some of you people do to your cars? Do you not take care of them? There is a probably a reason this thing is on Turo... I have a 2012 Abarth with approaching 80k miles and "nothing" and I mean nothing is broken, frayed, rattles, etc... My car looks for all intents and purposes brand new still, with the exception that the leather looks used (because it has been), and few paint chips. It has only ever needed to go the shop 1 time in the 6 years that I've owned it and that was for side skirt adhesive failing. My car is dead reliable and in terrific shape, so some of the criticism on build quality I think is limited to this "owner".
@slesperado6 жыл бұрын
Hey! I have a 2017 Abarth 500, and both of my side skirts have that issue. Was your issue resolved when you brought your car there? I had my dealership fix one of mine, but it started coming apart again a couple of months later. I haven't had any other issues though. I agree with you. I looks like the original owner of the car in this video didn't take proper care of his car.
@foxxwoof6 жыл бұрын
Yes it was resolved. I've only ever had problems with my drivers side, never the passenger side. Initially they retaped it (twice) with the factory type 3m adhesive tape, but by the time they parked it outside and I came to pick it up it had not held. So they had to do it again immediately. The problem is the the skirts are bolted at the bottom and held against the body at the top by pretty thin 3M tape. Well once the skirts pull away they warp a bit and at that point the skirt is always under tension to pull away from the body at the top. So they did fix mine, but what they did was used a black liquid type trim adhesive. It's been 3+ years and the repair has held firm, no problems at all. Now I will tell you, that for a while Fiat was ordering the the skirts and replacing the for people who had the problem. If your's is a 2017 just take it to the dealer and make them take care of it. They will, they may retape a couple of times, but I believe they will replace the skirts if they are problematic.

I've got a 1989 FIAT Fiorino with over 350,000 miles on it and still runs amazingly. FIAT are much more reliable than most people think.

hollywood fats A car that has both a high mileage and is old is both reliable and durable
@Windof6 жыл бұрын
hollywood fats i don't know precisely about this car but for my 2007 Fiat Bravo Fiat says that motors are designed for about 250.000 km. (155000 miles) without the need to open the motor. Fiat have the best engine technology from many years now and is still leading. So maybe you broke some minor parts of plastic and so on, but not the engine.
@superwolf956 жыл бұрын
Fiat make the best engines and mechanics in terms of day to day driving experience, you will not enjoy driving a cheap car as much as a fiat. They're also quite durable (you can easily see old Fiat around Italy from all ages with 200-500.000km) but they're not reliable in the sense of "i can go around 40 thousands km without a single failure", it's always best to have a mechanic as a friend near you just in case. Luckily we have a lot of them good with Fiat and parts are really not a problem.
@Windof6 жыл бұрын
superwolf95 what failure? There is no mechanical failure before almost 250.000 km. The superior technology and reliability in motors is the only key that saved Fiat from financial default and permitted to buy Chrisler and to sell motors or to gain royalities from others car producers.

I own a 2012. None of that stuff on the inside has happened. I just think someone doesn't know how to take care of things. The downside to me is the leather. And it's pronounced Ah Bart.

Is the little circle in the centre of the dash where a microphone for hands free would be located, by any chance?
@mx5hong6 жыл бұрын
+Prowler9000 I believe that's where the temperature sensor would be for models with the optional automatic climate control. Obviously Fiat just kept it for both auto and manual climate control to keep things simple. I had a Mini Cooper S with auto climate control. One day I just took a flashlight to see what was behind that grill. And sure enough, there was a piece of circuit board with a little chip embedded onto it. I'm guessing that little chip is a temperature sensor.
@Prowler90006 жыл бұрын
@@mx5hong Thanks! When he said "it does nothing!" I thought... that seems rather unlikely. Microphone was the first thing I thought of, but a temperature sensor seems like a really good possibility. How was the mini?

I don’t think it’s because the owners missed treating it, I think it’s because they’ve been renting it out.

In 2016 I bought an Abarth Cabrio - 20,000 miles, clean carfax, $10,200. Have not done a thing except for maintenance to it in 4 years and it is great. The only new car that just makes you smile when you drive it. Not that fastest, not the best built, not the best handling - but just plain fun!

10:25 I owned my 500 for over a year before I opened the hood for the first time. It was just to check the oil, which was fine. Great car! Don't buy one with an auto transmission, though. They are no fun. The 5 speed is a blast to drive!

@Helm’s Alee everyone. I had to order mine to get a manual, all I see is red, automatic, convertibles at the dealer... so lame.

I drove an auto when mine was in the shop overnight, I almost shot myself in the face after 5 minutes of driving it.
@MrPabsUk5 жыл бұрын
The auto`s are also very unreliable, you'd be lucky to hit 40,000 miles without needing a very expensive transmission repair, the manuals are virtually bombproof... ALWAYS BUY MANUAL FIATS! (that applies to a lot of modern computer controlled autoboxes, not just Fiat ones)
@iaxacs38014 жыл бұрын
@Rowsdower As young 20 something I get what your saying you connect with a car much more if it's a manual, got a 500c pop less for the convertible and more for the manual transmission. Europe still uses mostly manual though last I heard. I'm fine with America being all auto transmission though makes my manual have a built in anti-theft.

I owned a smart fortwo for a little a while back. Feels like this car, except half the size and power lol. Paddle shifters, a wonky sluggish transmission that almost feels like a manual, rear wheel drive, mid engine....mini sports car! Was a fun little thing to drive though, and turned a lot of heads. Especially when parking and they see a 6'3" man stepping out of it!
