What are called museum aircraft in most places, these men and aircraft work and fly on a regular basis down south hauling people, cargo, livestock and pretty much anything that fits thru the cargo doors of these wonderful machines. A real testament to Donald Douglas and the mechanics and pilots who keep them in the air. Unfortunately fate is and shall always be the hunter.

Um.... what happened? When did it happen? And was it this same aircraft?
@pylt9311 ай бұрын
@@DColclait crashed the 9th of march 2019 near San Carlos de Guaroa in Colombia, the left engine failed in flight, the crew tried to land on an airstrip of a palm plantation and while trying to extend the glide, it stalled and spined ad very low altitude. All occupants died on impact. I was flying nearby and heard the whole ordeal on the radio up until they stop responding. Another aircraft flying the opposite route as the dc3 was directed by atc(hk 4040) and they found the wreckage after 1 hour of search, by that time it was all consumed by fire. This was the only aircraft of that company so they ceased operations shortly afterwards. During the preceding week many hours of maintenance and test like those in this video were conducted on the failed engine. The plane flew a couple of days without issue before the ill fated flight
@dreamthedream89297 ай бұрын
@@pylt93but people say that if the engine fails its no big deal and the plane will conitnue flying. if that is true then how could this happen?
@pylt937 ай бұрын
@@dreamthedream8929 well it did continue to fly for nearly 30 minutes or a bit more after the initial failure, but of course it's not something to sneeze at specially in this aircraft. In this particular case, the mechanichal failure was such, that the propeller was unable to be feathered which of course produced a lot of drag on that side. The killing blow happened at fairly low altitude while the captain was trying to extend the glide to reach a nearby dirt runway, he increased the pitch but the combination of the other engine at near full power, the unfeathered propeller and slow speed, surpassed the aerodynamical authority of the rudder. The captain was in a very difficult situation, he had already experienced 4 similar failures in his career and emerged victorious, this one was a bit trickier and they were unable to emerge unscaved this time
@dreamthedream89297 ай бұрын
@@pylt93 I see, thanks. So it didn't just fall due to engine failure. Interesting that the captain was not traumatized enough from the previous incidents that you mentioned and continued to fly. Some would quit their job right after landing after the first failure. What do you do if this happens in the middle of the ocean which is a very common place to be for planes? Etops doesn't seem to be enough somehow. They fly too far from any airports with that, I even heard up 4 hours away. In addition they refuse to fly planes with 4 engines and only use the ones with 2 over oceans. Many airlines do this. How could this be? What if all 2 fail there?

The left engine failed and they could not feather the propeller which caused drag and low airspeed resulting in a crash with the emergency runway in sight. I wonder if that was the engine being worked on here? R.I.P to the crew and passengers.
